Anarchist Fire-Buss.
j Jeu.ey City, N. J., April 4 Bernanl
! ;:uuie. the Itader of a gang of fire-bugs who
j bave been fleecing insurance companies, was
j arrested in this city yesterday and taken to
ltnjoklyn. where three other members of the
gang Frederick Keight, Frederick Freund
ami Frank Duii:g are ill custody. The
i method of the gang was
to
rent stores, put
in a small Mock and obtain a heavy insur
ance on tbe stock and fixtures. When pre
aralious were made for the iuct-ndiary blaze
a lamp would be broken. Near it were plac
e I bladders tilled with benzine and around
the bladder a circle of gunpowder.
A slow fuse was used to ignite the powder
which exploded the bladder, and like a Hash
the place would be ablaze, leaving no trace
: ol the incendiary work except tbe broki n
lamp to deceive he iiisuraiii-e teople. The
o-cupants of the store would, of course, be
absent the night of the fire attending a so
cial gathering at the home of one of the
oiher cons-oirators to prove an alibi.
Toe gang is charged with having startid
two fires in lirooklyn. Illume was located
at So. 11 Porter street, and between the mat-tn-sses
were found twenty-two bladders. The
gang are anarchists, and belong to a Chicago
baud.

How it Works in Kansas.
Gov. Martin, of Kansas, in his lata mes
sage, says :
Fully nine-tenths of the drinking and
drunkenness prevalent in Kansas eight years
ago, bave been abolished, and I afBnn, with
earnestness and emphasis, I hat this Stale is
today tbe most temperate, orderly, aoher
community of people in Uncivilized world.
The abolition of the saloon has not only
prompted the personal happiness and gener
al pnsperity of our eitiaens. but H has enor
mously diminished crime ; has filled thou
sands of homes, where vice, want and
wretchedness one prevailed, with peace,
plenty and contentment, and has materially
increased the trade and business of those en
gaged in the sale uf usefjl and wholesome
articles of merchandise.
It will now lie in order for the liquor-dealers
to hire and httjtirt cheap "correspond
ents" from various corners and cross-roads
throughout Kansas, to inform eastern papers
that prohibition in Kansas is a "miserable
failure," "expensive fan," "ruinous fanati-
i cism. etc. It may now he expected that the
"nicropolitan" press will find it necessary
to emphasize and re emphasis, iterate and
reiterate the -fact" that prohibition i a fail
ure : to insist upon "the folly of prohibi
tion," and the "wisdom of license."

loon got away with its banian freight ill fine
style, and on reaching an altitude of 4.000
feet the aeronaut grasped the concentric ring
of the parachute attached to the side of the
balloon and leaied into space. The first few
liundred feet of the drop was rapid enough
to cause svera! lady sectutor3 to faint, but
the apparatus finally became inllated and
circled toward the earth as gracefully as a
bird, landing the blood aeronaut a half mile
from the starting point, none the worse for
his thrilling ride. The ascension aim jump
were both very successful.
