How Doe the Reading Stand ?
Since tbe South Pennsylvania revival thgre
has been a good deal of speculation as to the
position of the Reading company under its
present management. Go wan was at the
head of the Reading whea the alliance was
formed between tlie two com anies, bat Aus
tin Corbin, who b now president, is said to
be a friend of the, Pennsylvania. O.ie of the
a ewspaper organs of tbe Pennsylvania thus
pictures tie situation :
Although a traffic contract exists between
the South' Penn and the Reading tliere is n
much chance of its being enlurced aguinst
the will of the Reading otSciais. Tlie ReaJ-
ing lias sccored all tbe real estate needed to
provide a connection at Harrisburg. It is
understixd one of tbe first things to be done
will be to construct the bridge across the S.is-
quehatma to Harrisburg, the piers of which
are airvadv built and so form a connection
with tbe Harrisburg and Potomac, a line
owned by tbe Reading, which has its ter
minus at present a few miles distant from
tbe river. Before tba original South Penn
syndicate stopped work ail the plans had
been arranged for tbe completion of the Har
risburg & Potomac to the bridge and for a
connection over the bridge with the KeadoigJ
system, emce toe wore nas oeen stopped a
a connection has been made between the
Harrisburg and Potomac and the Western
Maryland at Shippensburg. so that with tiie
completion of the bridge and consummation
of the contemplated connection the Reading
would have direct access to the coal field of
Western Maryland. The Western Maryland
road has also acquired possession of the old
Eichelberger system of rail row Is about Hall
ow and Gettysburg, and is in a position by
the construction of about ten miles of roaJ
to reach tbe bridge and thus form a new line
front Harrisburg to Baltimore. This had i
been ia contemplation before the old yn li- j

tlie bridge was pushed by the South Penn,

A Eurjesa Sensible Act.
EorroK IIlt : The JoiinMnwn Council

weather. The parties engaged ia this recrea
tion are boys and girls of school aje, and I
caa see no ream why they shoo id be pre

The veto was the subject of much discea-
sion at the meeting of tbe Council on Feb.
2tst ; and, although, the ordinance had pass

tion to carry it, the Burgess' objections Jo
tbe contrary notwithstanding, rosi veil only
three votes tbe other nine being cast in the
negative.
Sensible burgess, and sensible Council in
taking the sooer second thought, and acting

that the same can't be said of the action tak
en by our Council a.id retiring Burgess.
Though young in years they seem old in
thoughts. A little intHicent and healthful
recreation on th part of the young or old
seems in their eyes to be a subject requiring
a prohibitory law.
Ah, but says one. coasting is da-grrous.
