Mr. Hunter was a son of Alex Hunter, Sr.
one of the older iniialgaiits and earlier set
tlers of this county. He was born on the
Ltth day of Novemlier, ls.ll. and was .VS
years old. He was an active citinen of this
county, residinf in .Sn-rset biwrtship. He
was engaged in school tTt.-hing during the
arlir days of th siiperintrmlcncy of Prof.
Stutzman, and then followed farming. He
was for many years a sch.Mil director, and
always took an interest in education He
was a soldier in the war of the rebellion,
having enlisted on Ihe 14th day of 8t em
ber, 184. in the 211th Regiment Pennsylva
nia Volunteers, and served until the close of
the war. In tlie (all of 1374 he went west,
first to Illinois, and then to Iowa. He hal
lowed farming at first, but finally drifted
idto Ilea Moines. He was not aa auuvsatsful
in the west aa In the east, and it can hardly
be said that he enjoyed it as well. He was a
ntembttr of the Christian cburcb. having
joined it at thia plata in 1863, and had full
