Tiiat is to say, your lungs. Also all
your breathing machinery. Very won
derful machinery it is. Not only the
larger air-passage, but the thousands of
little tuls-s and cavities lea-ling from
them.
When these are clogge-l and choked
with matter which ought not to be there,
your lungs cannot half do their work.
And what they do, they cannot do well.
Call it cold, coiuh. croup, pneumonia,

The Republic -n party has always fa

I had a talk yesterday with Senator
Cullom, of Illinois, who is really the
father of the Inter-State C-ommeree Bill.
He says the Commission is giving a
rather riirid construction to the law, but
on the whole he Is lieves it is working
well, and with some modifications which
he will !iroose in the early part of the
session, with confident cx-.ectation of
approval, he thinks the law will iiecouie
popular and w ill lie thoroughly endorsed
by the sHiple. By the way, some of the
Senator's friends say there is a Presi

Care of a Tramp's Hands.
"Une of the essential points of suii-ess
in my profession," said a dilapidated old
tramp w ho was talking to a reporter trout
behind the bars of one of the cells n the
city jail recently, "is to keep the bandit
in gotal order. You don't understand
what I mean, eh? AVhat I mean by
keeping the bunds in giaal order is this:
Of course, in tramping from town to
tow n, a man is 'iu'nle to lc arrested for
vagrancy at any time. He must tell a
story of how he h is just la-en thrown out
of work and is looking for employment,
which, ua yet, he has not been able to
find. In nine cases out of ten the judge
will ask him to show up his hands, and
when he ilis-a prisluce them they must
la- horny -and toilworn. Catch on, do
voir
"So yon see it ia a part of my business
to keep my hands lisiking as though they
lielonged to a man w ho was accustomed
to work .''tio days in the year. For the
purpose I carry with me this small stick
of hickory vood, which is round and
very smisith. Abut twice a day I take it
1s t w een my iialms and rub them so that
the friction will make them hard and
callous. In thut way, yon see, I produce
the 'real result' with very little trouble
and annoyance. There is a Isittle of
brown liquid which I use occasionally
for stainingthe back part of my hands a
beautiful siinbrown color, and there you
are. When I show my hands and thejudge
see's that I am a hard working man,
thrown out of employment by the strikes,
what can he do but believe me. The
trick has saved me many a day in jail,
and I flatter myself is a strictly original
idea, though it is spreading rapidly. The
profession, you see, is beginning to real
ize thut it will never do to show up to a
hardhearted police judge a pair of lily
white hands."
Everywhere the Same.
Wherever Giltiiore's Magnetic Klixir is j
introduced it leads all other remedies for
the cure of coughs, colds, hoarseness,
bronchitis ami all affections of the throat
and lungs. It will relieve the worst i-ase
of asthma in one minute, itegtilar physi
cians endorse it as a first class specific for
the purposes for which it is prejrared.
Bornard Salisbury, of Humphrey Centre,
Cattaraugus Co., X. Y.. w rites : " I have
tried it in my family and find it splendid.
We keepit constantly on hand ami would
not keep house without it." At this sea
son of the year all persons are liable to a
colli, which one or two small doses of
l iilinoiv's Magnetic Klixir will relieve at
once.

witiieswil thorough anil exact enfon-e-iiient
of the laws, esH-ciully against the
KiliHins, w ithin the jiast few months. It
has been proved lK-yoml douht wluit
has often ln-en denied that even in
these jri-eat centres of Mi)iulation it is
iwissilile to enforce the law ujniinst the sale
of liqiKiron the first day of the week, and
that the only question is w hether or not
the ollicials an- willinj; and determined
to enforce it. This is a lesson which tje
people are not likely soon to forget.
Ihiring the past year, as for a few years
previous, siecinl attention has liecn turn
ed to this subject by a concert of prayer,
during the first week of April, for the
lietter observance everywhere of the
Ixinl's Iay, and by sermons at the same
time, as far as possible, in the Christian
pulpits. It is noteworthy also, that more'
Issikson the anbject of the Sabbath have
tieen issued by American publishers w ith
in the last five years than for twenty-five
years licfore, and that all tliese volumes
uphold the authority and permanent ob
ligation of the weekly day of rest.
The Woman's Christian Temperance
Union has in ideSabhuth Observance one
of its more than forty distinct depart
ments of work, with superintendents in
nearly exery State and Territory. The
almost one thousand I'liions in Pennsyl
vania can hardly fail to be felt as a living
power in the agitation which seems to be
imiH-mling upon this question.

particular except one. Having still a

The Latest on The Dude.
A pretty sa-ciincn of this class waa
paying court Ut the daughter of a cleriry
nien. He was invited to dine at the
house, and the yount; lady assured him
that he had la-ttt-r prepare himself to re
turn thanks at the dinner table, as her
father always ak-d his guests to do so.
"I really cawnt. I ctmldn't do it, ye
knaw."
" Put must,' said his sweetheart, " or
your chuncea are gone."
" Ah, well, I will twy, but III make an
aw ful niesta of it, ye knaw ."
Dinner time came and the clcrjryuian
politely called upon the young man to
n-lnrn thanks, as the young lady had pre
dicted . He gave a .lesiaring glance at
his sweetheart, folded his hands and
suid:
"Ah there! Jesus. Awfully
spread. Thanks, awfully ? "
