Prohibitionists
are its bitteivet enemiis : that while the for-
mcr dtsjire victory for its on sake, the lat
ter make tbe .leS-at of the Rpublican tar
ty the snpreme object and consideration of
their efforts, and the latest platform of tlie
Prohibitionists shows this in a clearer light
than ever.
We expect to see in the platform of each
political party a clear, logical outline of the
licy that party if placed in power, pledges
itself to carry oat. Tlie platform of the Pro
hibition arty contains no positive state
ment of any proposed action except Upon
tiie one question of prohibition ; it is alto
gether a platform of neewtion and denuncia
tion. But the consistency of these political
Pharisees is not always as
k)ivij,M r(iis I
peculiar self-righteousness. Sir while they
cry out for religious liberty they deny the
principle of it by making themselves judges
of other mens' consciences simply beiau.se
they dirler from them in opinion, and ac
cusing theta of hypiicrisy and ct-mplicity
with evil iliwrs because they have acteil up
to the best of their judgment in tlie duties
they were called to perform.
The Prohibitionists do not contemplate
such an emergency as being called to ad
minister tlie government of the state or na
tion in the near future ; if they d'uk, they
would be more practi.al. As it is they can
afford to let all questions of how to govern
alone; 'tis pleasant o air ' themselves in
that delightful freedom from responsibility
whu h is .the lot of a party that has never
been in piwer, and to triticise tiie measures
and impugn the motives of those upon
whom the burden of government rests ; it is
so easy to be holy at the expense of other
men 's sins, it reminds one of an old story
of two men that went up to the temple to
pray. etc.
" The winter of their distsmtent " is most
severe on tiie State U-gisiature for the piis
sage of a resolution for the submission to
the popular rote of a ivnstitiitional amend

without that const it ntional antharity which
the resolution is intended to invoke, ami
without the sanction of the const it seriry
that placed it in power? Or did tliey demmid
low license or license without limitation, or
a virtual ignoring or tlie matter altogether?
The passage of the high license law was in
every way cimsistetit with the spirit of the
resolution tkat preceded it fir this Was to
place tlie greatest piMsihle restriction upon
the liquor traffic until the prowised decision
can be rendered.
But to the ultra Prohibitionists their own
hobby is worth nothing, unless k can be
brought alsiut by revolutionary met h. sis, by
casting asi.ie all constitutitinal objection
and anticifsitinj; the popular venlict.
From these sign of the times it appears
that tlie Republican I arty is still tlie safest
guar. lion of the-rmiiuV real, fhe pilot wlib fc
nest able to steer the ship of State, avoiding
tlie rock of fixMlized conservatism on the
one haiel and the whirlpool t)f chemical
radicalism ou the otlier.

ASnakaStory.
Although a little behind schedule time the
following snake story from the Bedford G
tetu is pretty good :
A dandtterof Mr. Jbchariah Kooutx, of
Bedford township, did a very courageous act
one day best week. She was sitting in tint
room sewing when she beard a great racket
on the porch. Looking out of the window
she saw two bnge rattlesnakes lying at full
length on the porch. She went out into the
yard and secured a pole, and going to the
porch where the reptilta were sunning them
selves dispatched them both with a single
Wow. They measured over five feet in
length anil were monsters in proportion. It
is supposed that the hoc and dry weather
drove the snakes from their mountain home.
The Bedford township girl stands at the
headof the list. Next!
