A Barnalsing.
Mu. Em roR : Allow me through your ja
er to say a few words concerningthe raising
of a barn that took place on the form of Mr.
Harry Baker, a mile and a half west of Sipes
ville. There was a jolly, good-natured crowd
on the. ground, 114 men and ! women, to
assist in raising the barn, which is a laiye
frame structure 4'x80 feet. Mcssm. Simon
Baker and Alex. Launtz, of SiHville, the
architects and builders, nre emit led to much
credit for the complete manner in which they
performed their work. The proprietor, Mr
Baker, showed himself to possess the happy
faculty of lieing just where he was most need
ed in every emergency, and a more willing
set of hands we have never seen any when-.
The work of raising the barn was entirely
finished by dinner time, and every piece fit
as neatly as could be made. We must not
forget to any a word in behalf of the ladit,
who so well performed their part of the work.
The tables fairly jroatwid tinder their Weiclit

their homes more than pleased with the fine
time they had enjoyed.

CHAUTAUQUA.
EXTENT AD 1NKLUESCS or CHAlTAI'tlUA 6
II'LA WHAT IS BKING ACCOMI'LISUKll, AM)
THE PKOSI'KtTS FOB THK E.NSL'ISS
SEASON.
CuAt TAiyCA, N. Y., June 13, 1H8".
' Such is theliheral spirit of the Chautau
(pia management that the new purchase of
lands, costing ill),t0, will not add to the in
debtedness of thcplace. Notwithstanding the
large outlay in the way of Improvements it
is still expected that this season and next
will see the place clear of all financial embar
rassment. The influence of the Chautauqua assem
blies is by no nicuiislimilcd to the grounds
on which they are held. Summer schools
become so general that .they must be regard
ed as a national institution, yet they were not
thought of anywhere till Chautauqua had
made them a practical reality. How much
of litis is due to the public press it is noteasy
to determine, and in this good work the
Hekalu stands second to no other paper.
Chautauqua has been criticised, bat kindly
and sparingly, the press preferring rather to
explain and commend its good qualities to
the world. This large generosity is equaled
only by the lilierality of the managers, not
one of whom has ever received in any way a
dollar as salary except the superintendent of
grounds. We affirm, not in a deprecating
spirit, but as an illustration of the power of
the Chautauqua movement, that tlie assem
blies held in Massachusetts, California, Flor
ida, Kansas. Teiinesse, and many other
states are but its echoes ; but as such they
may be of equal significance, and all the
greater will be the credit of the original as
sembly. .
This idea was born in the generous and
fruitful mind of Ix-wis Miller, of Akron, .,
while in a meditative mis si at a camp-meeting
near Canton, O., and iu a spirit of abso
lute unselfishness he chose Chautauqua lake
as the plat where he would scnd thous
ands of dollars in carrying it into effect.
The details of the scheme are largely the
work of Dr. J. II. Vimvnt, and the enter
prise as a whole required ran-qualities of
enterprise and daring.
Education has really become the leading
element in the " Chautauqua idea." not that
the spiritual or the n-ligious has been aban
doned. Considered as an educational Insti
tution Chautauqua is very religious, and
considered as a religious assembly it is very
literary ; as a summer resort it is a good deal
of everything. In a speech made: from its
platform President Oarl'ield said: "Since T
caiua tixin these grounds one iiiqxirtant
problem hits been solved, and that is how
recreation and profit may lie combined."
As a seat of learning Chautauqua presents
a scheme that is unique and comprehensive.
The schools of language constitute the most
inqiortant deiirtment. Firstn-las scholars
are on tltt prouml, ractrfving large sularies,
and eotrqictPnf. ti teach Hi-brew, Sanscrit,
(ireek, I-atin, French, (ivrman, Spanish and
Anglo-Saxon. In the past the variety of
atttiiunctit li .1111(1 alaong the pupils hu-bcen
all comprehensive. Many of them are be
ginners. Some are college graduates who
have become a little ntsty, many are clergy
men who study nothing but Hebrew or the
testament and many are college professors.
In numbers the t'erman classes lead, follow
ed closely by the French. Sanscrit last year
had but a Single deTotee. It will liave more
in the future. Max Mullcr calls this lan
guage one of the richcstthat was ever spo
ken. The Vedic literature which Wilson,
Bunioulf. and others found locked tip iu it,
is said to be immense in quality and tif great
variety. For two thousand year B. C. all
that was valuable in Hindoo thought and
Hindoo longings found expression in that
language, and was preserved by it. Such
treasures cannot remain hidden.
In these schools of language books are hut
little use, and no word issMikeu in theclass
nsim except of the language studied. What
is called the " natural method " is pursued
by all the teachers. Many academy teachers
resort to Chautauqua to K-rfect or improve
tbeir own . method of teaching. An educa
ted ticniiaii is at the head of the t'erman
dcrtntent, and the Fn-ncli professor teach
es bis native language. Private students
here seek to correct pronunciation. The pro
gress the pupils make is tifteu an astonish
nient even to themselves. They sum find
their minds inclined to think iu the lau
gunge they are studying, and then progress
is rapid.
The beautiful building now in prw-ess ol
erection on the smuniit is of Mis irisii design,
lmi by .lo feet, and has a commanding view
of all the northern part of the lake. This
edifice will be three stories high in the cen
ter, two in the wings, and be used mostly by
the schools of language. As the educational
center it will contain offices, a commodius
library, grates, black'nuards, pianos, a library
and all other neci-ssary appurtenances. It
will be ready for use July 1st if the contract
is fulfilled. . .
The French department this year will be
in charge of Prof. A. IK? Roiigcmont of the
Adclhpi Accademy, Brooklyn, N. V., with
Mile M. Fleuraut of Brooklyn as assistant.
Both bring with them the highest rccom
utuiitlatiouofcharat'turaudat'coiiiplishuieiita. The qualifications of the teachers may lie.
seen in the tact that the books used ure
mostly prepared by themselves. Of Prof.
Haepoc's Hebrew and Semitic text hooks
Prof. J. K. Cbyene, D. D., of Oxford. Eng.,
says : " No better books introductory to
Hebrew exist." These books prenent a
method of acquiring a knowledge of langu
ages essentially different from the methods
in common use. The pupil first gains an
accurate and thorough knowledge of some
of the facts of the hinguagc ; than learns the
principles irhich these facts teach and by
which they are regulated, and thus he is
furnished with the material by which he
can prosecute, his work, and as he progresses ;
it is constantly increased. Students will find
at Chautauqua the books they need.
It may be said that the local Chatitanqua :
is finally up and dressed. The grove flut
ters in its toyal rolies. f the burnt district
only the scar remains. The grounds are
fresh and sweet and clean. The aroma of a
thousand flowers floats on tlie air. At least
two-thirds of the cottages are occupied. A
chorus of hammers is beard from early
dawn till twilight. The bail will ota-n July
.2d with a church congress and musical insti
mtt, 4j0 1 he followed with the National Edu
cational association. ' M. IL II..

Important Information.
The fourteenth annual Inter-State Picnic
exhibition, under the auspices of the Patrons

arrange plans for the future, little did they
think that they were even then laying the
foundation for the greatest gathering of far
