Congress haa appropriated four hundred
thousand dollars for arming and equipping
tho militia of tht! different Staten. This is a
very limited amount considering the im
portance of t he service the citizen soldiers
would lie called upon to jeform in the event
of an emergency which our small standing
army would not lie of sufficient strength to
meet The share which Pennsylvania will
receive under this appropriation is $'J7.4t.
Fortunately the Mi!icy which our State has
pursued with its National Juard has made
it the most erticient volunteer military force
in the country.

The Fourth of July.
There are symptoms in Philadelphia and
other localities of a disposition to give more
than usual prominence thi year to the cele
bration ol the Nation's birthday. This is as
it should 1k and, if it is accompanied by a
determination to improve on the usual
methods adopted on Mich occasions, may
accomplish much good. The Iudcwtidcncc
of this country is one of the grandest way
marks in the march of civilization, and its
proper celebration should foster true iatri
otism and a reverence for the cause of civil
liberty ; not noisy or Isiisterous. imitations
of these. True, genuine patriotism is the life
blood of a nation and should ie filtered and
eiiiMiiraged by every proper means.

Meyersdale Somerset.
Last Friday w as a great day for 'Reinedie''
Meyers : indeed, it was a great day r all the
' Maroons," iHs-ause several hundrtsl ol their
friends had turned out. when the sun was
highest in the heavens and the thermometer
marked- HJ in the shade to swelter in the
heat just to sis- them "do up" the
" F.clipse" team of Meyersdale, but " Ileme
die" and Chi had a great deal to do w ith it.
The baiting of the home team was strong
and their hits well 'bunched." Sam Hus
ton's double when three men were on bases
was chisTcd fo tlie echo, as was Kregnr's
magnificent catch of a hot one " at least
three feet over his head. Uhl played a
faultless game la-hind the bat, not having a
single passe. 1 ball, while lovc und Picking
played their usual good game on 1st and
J.L Cisik in riirht make a cosily mnfTinthe
fit h. hut rcdcemisl himself in the eighth bolh
in the field and at the hat, hitting for two
bases, bringing in two scores and saving tlie
game. It was an " otiday " for Zcigler w ho
dnipped every ball that came to him on
third, but when Huston relieved him the
game assumi-d a different asxct and no less
than three put outs were credited to thirl.
Meyers made several costly errors in picking
up the ball, but gave only one man his base
on balls and strm k out twelve.
. For the visitors Reich on first layed a
faultless game aud d-serves great credit for
the many put outs he made. Frank Hob
litzeil played a good game Is-hind the hat and
is credited with tiiris; out of the seven runs
made by his team, and made the only three
base hit of the game. Stratum sent four men
to first on halls and was ruped all over the
field. The visitors played a better fielding
game throughout than the hone team, and
had they been able to bat Meyers would
have won the game. Following is the

The New York Home Journal tells this
story of a gentleman decriled as a well
know n Rostoiiioii :" This man, now weal
thy and enjoying an income of hundreds of
thousands a year, recently hud his attention
called to the fact that he had among his
tenants a family who could not pay their
rent, lie went at once to the agent, and
asked the simple question : 'Do they owe
their rent, and do they not pay ? TI e agent
replied that that was about the size of it.
' What are you going to do about it?' asked
the landlord. ' Put them out.' was the re
ply. ' Iton't you no it,' was the resnsc.
' When I was a poor man, and could not
pay my way, the father and husband of that
household was my landlord. was in hard

What I could, and w hen I couldn't to pass it.
T haven't forgotten it, though I have pros

it; when they can't pass it as he did mine,
but never ask for it.' And the family has
lived for years in that house."

A West Point Incident.
On June loth General Sheridan, accom
panicd by Mr. Child, visited Grant Hall to
insjKi't the oil sirlrait (f General Grant, pre
sented to tlie Academy by Mr. t'hilds. 'After
General Sheridan had exposed his satisfac
tion with the work of the artist, Mr. Chi Ids
said. : " General, when you die wc w ill place
your lMirtrait.as well as that of General Sher
man, liesidc that of Grant. You were so
closely allied in life that you should not lie
scar.itcd in death. It would Is? very appro
priate for you three to hang side by side in
this ball.""
" Mr. Childs," bluntly replied (Sen. Sheri
dan, "if my Hrtrait is to Is- liung in this
hall beside that of my lieloved chief, I would
like to see it there, and if you intend to do
for me what you have so generously done for
Grant, it would lie better to do it w hile I am
living." -
This was said in a bantering manner with
no cXieetation thai Mr. Childs would act
upon tiie suggestion. After the review,
while Sherman and Sheridan lingered on
the parade ground waiting to witness the
farewell dress jiaradeof the graduating class,
Mr. Childs joined them and in the presence
of both declared that he bad made up his
mind that their jxirtraits should hang with
Grant's, one on each side, and requested that
each select his artist.

As you well know the office of Poor House
