WASHINGTON LETTER.
Vram sar Regular Gain tsiodeiit. -
H'AsHtSisms. IX C. Septtmlsfr II.
Dullness basheen reignirai m Washington
since the adjournment of Congress and the
departure of the Presi-lcnt. Tlie exodus of
peoj4e to the mountains and seashore has
this year been greater than nsnat Tlane
who leave Washington in tlie beginning of
tlie warm season and do mit return nutil
after frost, fail to see the Cajiital City in her
loveliest aspect. The temperature here dur
ing the summer montha quite as eool as
in far higher Ttttirmlus. Tiie streets, with
their sn4fa surfaces shaded by tne over
lafiprag branehes of trees, form beautiful
vistas, at the ends uf whk-h may be seen a
cool fountain or majestic statue. All un
sightly object are hwklen by a luxuriance of
verdure unparalleled in any other city of
this sise. The parks, for whose beauty
Washington famous, are a delight to the
eye with their many colored flowers and
shrubs ; and altogether one wonders where a
pleasanter place could be found to spend the
summer.
Already a few familiar faces on the streets
denote tlie return of some of the old ha! littles.
The- Prrshleut in expected to lie at his post
again in about a week. It is still a debated
question whether Secretary Manning will be
able and willing to resume his duties.
The crank has not felt it to be his fashion
able duty to leave Washington during the
summer months. The other day a good
kjnking, well dressed gentleman walked with
an imposing air into the White House. On
being asked his name and business, he an
swered haughtily, I am the Emjieror of
America, and I desire tliat thirty millions of
money shall lie immediately brought me
fmm yonder building" jminting to' the
Treasury. The doorkeejier, with mock
obeisance, and professing his allegiance,
persuaded his Majesty to enter a carriage,
and be was quietly driven to the lusane
Asylum. There he should be placed in com
pany with another crank, who has been
there for several years, and whose claims are
even more extensive than those of the woul.l
be Emperor. He believes that he is tlie
Monarch of the World, and unlike the des
pondent Alexander thetireut, he does not
wish Sir other worlds to conquer.
The employes at the White House are very
busily engaged just now, getting the man
sion ready fiir oceupaney. Every summer
during the President's vacation it undergoes
a thorough cleaning. All tlie rarjvts are
rolled up, the window curtains and dnqieries
taken Mown, and chaos and the chamber
maid reign. The wisslwork in the house is
lieing jiainted and regilileil, both in the jiri
vate and jiuhlie ajurtments. Then tliere are
to be some -iuuiges in furniture, the wcui
and tear of which in the rooms ojien to the
public necessitates frequent renewal. Every
thing will be complete and the entire house
in onler by the time Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland
return, though it is not probable they will
oeeuiy it at presenLas their country home is
also rapidly approaching corujiletiou, and it
was the Presiikmt's original intention to
sjivud the rest of the hot season tliere.
Mr. Bayard ia the only Cabinet officer in
tlie city at jiresent. Mr. Lamar is in Ver
mont, writing a sjieech, it is said, to be de
livered at the unveiling of a statue of John
C. Calhoun in Charleston. The statue will
lie unveiled jirovided any solid ground can
he found for it. What a s'jiertacle and what
a theme for the poet, the historian, and the
moralist. A bnmze Calhoun lisiking on the
skeleton ruins and the purseless heart- of
secession, umid sulphurous fumes and infer-'
nal perturbation.
The Srretury of War has not been in tlie
city Sir weeks. Adjutant General Drum has
been acting ne. -retary. There is great rejoic
ing at tlie War Dejiortment over tlie rapture
of (ieronimo and his band of red anarchists.
It is said at the War ltirtmeiit that tix-y
will hong. linked they ought to hang.
This refined and civilized means of exit has
terrors for the untutored savage that mere
familiar shooting cannot equal. To die like
a Christian malefai-tor, with benefit ofcleigy.
fills the mind of wor li with nnhowlable
horror, and turns the sweet memory of
brained babies and tortured, disemliuwled
women to ashes in his mouth. By all means
let them hang, and let Congress honor tien
eral Miles and Captain Law-ton with a vote
of thanks.
Veterana Reunion, Sept. 17.
We are now ujion the threshold of the
great reunion, which is agitating the iiiimi
of tlie jx-ojile within a radius nf forty uiiles
from the town, and all indications during
the jiast week Jsiint to a larger gathering of
people than had before laeii anticijiatetL
The adjoining counties of Westmoreland,
Fayette, Cambria and Beilt'onl, toscther with
C'undierland, Md.t will I heani from by
thousands, and the news from ail sections of
our own (Simerset Co.) is tliat everylsidy will
he here. The streets and lavements are he-
ng cleaned and swept by the borouim au
thorities, jsdes and arches will be erected.
and tlie town will be -profiisely ik-corated
with streamers, banners, flags and hunting.
and it is to be hojieii all will I happier for
having sj-nt the day in Simersi-t. A more
stasonatile time for this event eonld not liave
been selected. Tlie farmer has been blessed
with a bountiful harvest, his cniK liave
been gatliered in goml condition and miw af
ter having garnered his yearly fortune, in the
heat of a miilsmnmer snn. let him take a day
off, turn out with his wife and children, and
together take in the greatest of gatherings in
the histi iry of the county.
Although we have iirrially failed to secure
the sjieakers of national imputation so much
desired, yet there will be jiresent a numls-r of i
orators, among them Gen. Harry White,
Adj. tJen'l Stewart, Col. Timi Bayne, Col

others. ,
ArrtingenHtits- for a cannon were made
sevend weeks ago, and at this writing, we
liave the assurance of two, and who knows
hut that a whole buttery may lie in line on

"Come from the valleys, come from the
bills, come from the mountains, mine from
everywhere, and be sure you get here."
