take down his Shakespeare and re
fer to the "Tempest Act 2 ; scene
2," he will discover that his moral
(lensibilities were unnecessariiy ex
cited. The House has passed a pension
bill that increases the pension of
oldiers' widows from eight to twelve
dollars a month. It is said if the
bill becomes a law it will add 6,.
000,000 a year to the pension list,
Xow, if Congress will take measures
to purge the list of all the bummers
and rascals who by some means
have got themselves placed on it,
they can not only add another four
dollars for the widows, but also to
the pensions of the old and deserv

law was 6olely intended.
We have another lengthy article
from Dr. Fichtner on the subject of
the party organization, which the
crowded atate of our columns pre
vents publishing. The Doctor falls
into tbe error of supposing that we
are antagonizing his proposition and
exhibits unnecessary warmth in de
fense of it. Our object was simply
to point out objections that would
undoubtedly be made by those who
are seeking an opportunity for a
ehindig. We again repeat we are
sot wedded to our ideas, and are
simply attempting to guard the par
ty against future trouble through a
violation of the rules.
Seould the Pennsylvania railroad
succeed in gobbli ng up the South
Penn rood, apparently it will not
then have a clear field, as the "Sea
board, Pennsylvania and Western"
railroad, whose line runs from Har
risburg to Pittsburg, has announc
ed that it will commence the
work of conduction in the spring.
The right of way has been secur
ed from Harrisburg, through Hunt
ingdon to ILdlidaysburg, from
which place it will cross the moun
tain, but what direction it will then
take west we are not advised. It
will be a parallel and consisting
line with the Pennsylvania, though
perhaps not so short and dangerous
as the South Penn will be if .rn
pleted. The House "Couimitu on Labor"
has prepared and agreed to report a
bill, not only prohibiting the em
ployment of convict labor on Gov
ernment work, but also the employ
ment of aliens ou uch work. While
the bill is intended to protect Amer

refuse to become citizens, and after

former homes. If the Government
assumes this position as to its work,
the Unions and labor leagues will
soon take the same ground as to
private work, acd alien cheap labor
will speedily be driven from tbe
country.
Is another column we publish a
communication signed "Uno," which
came to band too late for insertion
in last week's issue. His sugges

and if carried out would cure the

The Supreme curt of Wisconsin
is reported to have decided that pro
hibition does not prohibit, in that
State. Tbe agent of a Wisconsin
brewery, twice convicted of selling
liquor "without a license, was adjudg
ed not guilty because 44 the United
States license held by his employers

the National Revenue laws provide
that they shall not conflict with the
laws of the several States, and if
this be so, the Supreme Court of
Wisconsin never made such a decis

a vote of 21 to 22. Senator Voor-he-es
was the only Democrat who
voted for the bill. Dakota is large
ly Republican and there is no prob
able hope of the bill passing tbe
House as long as it contains a Dem
ocratic majority. Before the war
the slave drivers would permit no
new Northern State to be admitted
to the Union unless it was accom
panied by a slave State, and so now,
the Democrats oppose Dakota's ad
mission until she is accompanied
by a Democratic State. The only
way by which the Democratic South
can hope to maintain its dominancy
is by refusing to admit any more
Republican States until they can
manufacture a Democratic one, and
therefore there is no hope of Dakota
being admitted during this session.
Her Republicans, like the Southern
slaves, have no political rights that
Democrats are bound to respect.
The contest between the operators

arrived at a point where a halt must

Colks, III., Feb. 4 Noticir.R an
account of the death of Joseph Uan
kin. member of Concress from the
Fifth district Wisconsin, brings to
mind an incident in his life that is
not generally known. He was Cap
tain of Company D, Twenty-seventh
Wisconsin Infantry, of which regi
ment Dr. J. B. Cooper was First
Argistaut Surgeon. Tbey messed at
the same table. After mustering out
in the tall of IS'ij he went up lied
river, Louisiana,and renterl a cotton
plantation. Early in 1SGC he went
with his wife and child to his new
home. Dr. Cooper had gone to New
Orleans to live, and in the fill of the
year Capt. Rankin, wile and child,
with their bnpj'agp, came into his
office. Rankin s:titi he had been
driven out from his place, and that
his neighbors would not tolerate a
Yankee amon them. He pleaded
his Democracy, but it was of no
avail. They would ride around his
fields on mules with shotguns, and
drive his hands out, and finally
gave hjs hands peremptory orders to
leave or be killed. He left, glad to
get away alive. He said, "I um go
ioc bsck to God's country," and he
left for Wisconsin.

few das ago Dr. Mitchell came
here from Washington to find Mrs.
Cook, the wife of a poor farmer liv

daughter of Dr, Mitchell, although
be had never Been her, nor ever
heard of her till recently. She is
nearly 40 years of age, and her fath
er is 70 ye:ie old. He says that he
married a Vnnessee girl over forty
years age. Her parents opposed
the match, ami they made it so un
pleasant that he concluded to join a
regiment that was going to Mexico.
Before the troops were disbanded
after the war he heard of the death
of his wife, but he did not hear that
an infant had been born. He did
not return to Tennessee, but all
these years havsbeen spent in other
places.
Some time ago he heard about
the little daughter his wife left, and
upon iuvestigation,he learned where
she w.ts living. He came on to
Spartanburg, and finding her lot a

has made arrangements to buv her
a home and make her comfortable
