The powerful combination formed by the
farmers of Bedford, riiinlingdon, Somerset
and Fayette counties to contest with the
Pennsylvania railroad company and W. H.
Vanderbilt in the South Pennsylvania rail
road matter has resulted in a movement to
construct another line to compete with the
Pennsylvania company. Prominent iron
masters, coal operators, bankers and merch
ants living in the counties have signified
their willingness to extend the necessary
financial aid to make the undertaking suc
cess. The Baltimore and Ohio railroad, it is
said, have signified a willingness to assist the
scheme, and preliminary meetings have been
held.

account of heart disease and similar ail

This announcement has aroused the greatest
interest in medical circles all over tbe coun

EVEBTSV '.
Mb. Eiutor. Words fail to describe my
gladness when I found Mr. Smith, the phi
lanthropist of Hie Semi- Warily Commercial
had decided that he had glory enough for
one day, and that "Plumbago'' should be
forgiven My beort bled with sorrow as I
thought of the many unkind thrusts that I
bave given this truly excellent man, and I
am willing to do my share on the benevo
lent line when I say that I may lave seen a
great many better seen than be, but I cer
tainly have seen very few worse.
Now I want your readers to look on tbe
findings of two different Grand Juries, one
st the May term and tbe other at the. Term
of Court ju&t ended : - ...

I propose to make no comment on the
findings of these two Grand Juries. Both
sets of men were under oath and, hence all
must allow that they acted conscientiously,
and yet the two findingsare as diametrically
opposite as virtue and vice. The finding of
the Slay Term threw the Semi-Weekly Phi
lanthropist into spasnis from which he has
not yet recovered. The finding of the lat
Grand Jury is a step backward. This find
ing recommends what 1 think I am safe in
calling utter impossibilities. No modern
science can ever make the Somerset Jail
anything but what it is a miserable pen for
wretched inmates. When the report of this
Grand Jury was read Judge Baer was moved
bv his utlcr shame and disgust to exclaim :
Yea. repair but let your repairs be from
the ground up." Judge Baer is an enlight
ened eentlenian. He knows what a jiil
should be, and I have no doubt beexperien-
ces a thrill of nervous horror whenever his
duty compels him to consign a fellow being
to the dump, reeking atmosphere of that in
ternal "black hole" which the people of
Somerset county dignify by the name of
jail. The oldest member of the liar, too, a
gentleman whose experiences in life have
not tended to smooth the asperities of a
disposition naturally perhaps, not of tbe
mildest, exclaimed in his grim way " l es.
repair it and after you're done, set a match
to it and get rid of it ; it never was fit to be
used as a jail." I venture the assertion tbat
none of the Brnck, none of tbe Bar, none of
the County officials was not thoroughly dis
gusted at this finding of the last Grand
Jury. But the words of the verdict bave
gone forth, and so far as I am concerned I
caii say, "So be it" Now. however loth I
may be to' do so, and every one who has
read my articles will bear me witness that I
am lotti to t:i!K aoout tne snorteoinini oi
others, I must turn to a sad, sad picture.
Mr. Smith, the old girl of the Commercial
Semi- HVrl fy- Ten-Per-Cent-fnr- Ootlectimi- Lrm
has always arrogated to himself great praise
for his actions in unearthing what he has
alwavt dubbed "The Poor Honse Frauds."
According to his last issne should I say
'her last issuer' Mr. Kditor. Well, I'll stick
to "his" for there is an old rule in Kirk
ham's Grammar, "When the sex is unknown
or dotibtfal, use the masculine pronoun"
According to his last issue.'he "has been
weaving the web of evidence around those
men for years." Good God ! what a human
.pilfer she is i; Think of it! Here sits Lou,
'within his darksome den and spins, and
spins the web that shall presently be loaded
with the carcasses of the human flies, wnom
be can entice "up his winding stair' Here
be sits mumbling bis thumb, aud muttering
like Macbeth's witches :
"Double, doable, toll and trouble
Do thou clialdron bell and babble t
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a Hi ll-hrutn, boll and bubble."
Finally, the spider has got her victims in
her toils. The tpider of prey is always femi
nine, and she rushes into Court, but the bu
man spider in this instance is as mncb dis
gusted to see the net work of evidence that
was venn a-spinning dissolve like the base
less fabric of a vision, as is his reptile proto
type when she catches a bnmble-bee instead
of a fly. ' - .
Think what a monster has been nurtured
in tin's Coanty. Here fct a roan, who by his
own acknowledgment has seen his felloT
citizens pursuing a wrongful course for
yean and yet. instead of going to them and
nttering words of connsel and advice, he
gloats over their wrong-doing, and prose
cntes them for his own aggrandizement. The
human spider!
IaA not Mr. Smith try to wriggle himself
from the cross to which I bave nailed him.
He's there to siay, and bis efforts will only
lacerate the punctures that my nails have in
flicted.
I want to give the readers of these articles
a iiule bit of "mighty interesting reading.
While Mr Smith was posing in the role of
philanthropist he sent out these bits, of En
glish, and any one who peruses them will
have no difficulty in seeing why I styled

And now, having made clear Mr. (Smith's
philanthropy, let us look for short time
at hi last and latest, vis : bis desertion of
tbe Bepnblican Party. With fulsome eager
neas he clasps Mr. Sam Philaoo ia his arms
and shouts, "this is the way I long have
sought.' Sammy, beware! Lou will (eav
millstone about your neck to drag voir, lo
depths dark with disaster and black who
defeat - - " .
The Republican party rff Somerset county
have merely paused to ask, "Can it be true?
Has he really left us 7" and when once sat
isfied of this fact, the Longmeter Doxology
"Praise God. front W bom all blessings
flow" will ascend from every throat in the
Bepublican ranks. Smith has always been
an obstructionist, a fomcnter of dissensions.
and he is now beginning bis oil tactic.
hoc. has never advoralM man or measure
tbat did not fail. I defy any man to place
bis finger on a single tbing that' lou A.
Smith announced should be a success that
is not to-day branded with the mark of fail
ure. Where is tbe man whom he has ever
attempted to elevate that he has not depress
ed ? Fer be it from me to gather np the
wrecks that strew the shore of the sea of
opportunity and bold them up for the winds
of adverse comment to whistle through
but what is Lou Fmrtb himself but a
dwarfish model of gigantic failure? .
The Democrats will sigh. Phiison may
be able to hire bint to support Barron for
Sammy, let tne whisper jtt your ear, Pd
rather give aim ten dollars for bis pro
nounced and virulent opposition than have
his strongest support gratuitously.
And now, Republicans, let us shake bands
all round and say of Loo as the boy said of
his mother's visitor: I know it's naughty,
but I can't help it, and so tliank God she's
gone- ;,
