Thi Fiarr or Aran. The first of April
was a beautiful but unusually quiet day in
Somerset this year. A great many pec pie
were in town and a conaiderabla amount af
money was handled. Those who had mon
ey to lend were not besieged . by the usual
number of Importunate borrow en and had
diScult y in placing their funds. There was
really no demand for roonevi Tbere'Vas
considerable business done in both ib?sk
thoootary's and Recorder's offices but not
nearly so much as on like occasions on for
mer years. The business was mostly re
ceipflng for payments or interest. There
were only sixteen numbers entered 5n the
Prothonotarys office and only one execution
isrued. This speaks extremely well for the
financial condition cf . the people of our
eooaxy. ' v L-i
Or Ixtemst to FiEXiss. The following
sharp swindling scheme is being practiced
in tbe eastern counties by an agent for a
patent com sbeller and feed grinder: The
farmer was waited, on by aa agent of the
Standard machine company, of Cleveland,
Ohio, wbo requested permission to put one
of the machines onjhe larra for exhibition,
Tbe farmer gave the desired permission and
was then requested to surn a blank, which
the agent said was to show the home office
that he bad permission to put the audafi
on the premises. The farmer signed the
blank and thomrbt nothinr farther of &
maim until a short time after thenacbJaei
arrived. When be received notice to C
for tbe same or suit would be brought. Cp-
oa investigating the matter the farmer
learned that he had signed an order for taw
machine. A cumber of farmers were swii
died ia the same manner.
On gc-sne into the jail abjut half-past nine
o'ciock Monday night, for the purpose of
locking tbe prisoners in their cells. Sheriff
Winters discovered that one of bis gnesoM
Henry Miller, was missing. Upon examina
tion he found that Miller had effected his es
cape from a eel! on the second floor. Some
years ago three prisoners had dag a hole
through the wall from this cell and made
their escape. The careful and economical
centlemen who then served the county in
the capacity of commissioners had the brick
replaced and the hole patched up, so all that I
Miller hsd to da was to punch out the brick j
and truck that filled np the hole, tie the bed
clothes together for a rope and elide to the
ground. There are at least a half dozen
other boles in the wall through which Mil
ler could have aiade bis escape just as easily.
We submit that there is no need for a &00,-
OtO jail but there i an "argent and 'pressing j
necessity for a aew bniWing or at least or in
the improving and reroodeling of Ae'cis-j
pra"eful and insecure oW structure. Sker-
iff Winters upon learn in f Miller's escape -

The literary society at California closed
with the schools. It was asoocess, being
both entertaining and instructive.
The coming wheat crop bas been consid
erably damaged by the late frost. Farmers

David Miller is making preparations to

Oor farmers improved their time during
the winter by hauling lime. Lemon Miller

over two thousand bushels of slaked lime,
while many others have hauled lesser
amounts.
Our schools have nearly all closed. They
were tutored by young aaea of good ability
and morals. Quemahoning can boast of
having as good schools as any townahip in
the county. The fact that she pays as high
wages as any, may account for it.

The term just closed was very pleasantly,
ond we believe profitably, spent with both
citizens and papils. It has been to me the
most pleasant of any term that I have taught
since I have been in the profession. The
citizens, with bat few exceptions, were in
terested in the attendance and progress of
their children, and to these I tender my sin
cere thanks for their co-operation in the pro
gress of tbe school. Success to yon all is the
wish of M. R. Both ix,
Teacher.
Albilkke, Kas Maaca ISaS.
Enrroa HcaALa: I wish to say a few
words to my friends and comrades of Som
erset County, and think nay best war of
doing it is through tbe Hxkau's columns.
I have been here in this city about tea
days, and to my utmost surprise find this a
place of much more importance than I re
ally expected. It is now incorporated a
second-class city, and the prospects are that
ia the coarse of another twelve months i
will be placed on on the record as a first
class city.
I would say to those wbo bare any idea of
ever coming to Kansas, come soon, as every
day tbe valne of land is increasing; but
there are thousands of acres yet to be im
proved. Tbe schools here are of the finest kind.
In this city there are now about twelve
hundred names enrolled. Think of it, in a
town not 17 years old! seventeen years
ego, I asa informed, there was only three or
four bouses here ; now the business bouses
are as nee buildings as I ever saw ia mv old
home in Pennsylvania.
Xow. I suppose, in Somerset County you
are having a good time boiling sugar, and
tramping mod. Here farmers are busy put
ting oat their spring crops. . Some, I pre-
reume, are through with their oats seeding.
Tbe wheat fields areas green as I generally
saw them tbe latter part of Aprii Of coarse
grain is selling at a low figure here, bat it is
as good as a treat to sea tbe hundreds of
bushels of corn lying nnorlbbed, and the
many head of cattle sorrounding it. This is
the wsy, and only way to consume the vast
amount of grain raised here.
One word as to how this dry is located.
It is one and a half miles north of the Smo
ky Hill river, its western boundary being
the saad bills ; oa the north H is bounded
by a level plain, and on tbe east tbe same as
north. Waea I aay plain, 1 mean a irvei
country as far as tbe eye can reach.

old solid Republicans, at that

' Superintendent of Public Instruction E.
E. Higbee bas mailed to aO county, dty and
borough school superintendents ia the state
circular, with suggestions as to tbe Arbor
Bay exercises of April lGUs. The circular
suggests that every teacher organize bis
school for the work, and, ia consultation
with the directors, have the grounds proper
ly prepared and holes ready for trees, shrubs
flowers and vines ; that the co-operation of
the whole neighborhood be asced : that
some sort of forma! exercises mark the oc
casion, and that such trees be selected for
planting as grow in the respective neighbor
hoods.
Tbe best way to secure general action in
the matter is that adopted by State Superin
tendent Higbee, who is trying to rally tbe
children of the public schools to take an in
terest and co-operate ia the nutter. He bas
requested all the County Superintendents to
impress the subject upon their teachers, di
rectors and papils ; and from his circular to
tbem are taken these hints which are of gen
eral interest.
Select mainly such trees for planting oa
school grounds as grow well in your imme
diate vicinity hickory, walnut, sweet gum.
dogwood, button wood, ah, basswood or
linden, birch, locust, willows, toliptree.pines
larches, firs and others too numerous to
mention. For shrubbery and vines mock
orange, spireas. the burning bush, dentxia,
Iicacs, wigeCa, hardy rosea, honey suckles.
Virginia creeper, wistaria, the taeoma, and
others, which will give variety and greatly
increase the attractiveness of the school-
bcildings and its surrounding of grass plot
and greenery.
As to the exercises of Arbor Day, these
may be quite informal, if that shall seem
best the essential purpose being the plant
ing of trees, shrubs and vines ; bat it would
be eminently proper, where arrangements
can readily be made for a formal program,
to make this also a prominent .feature. Tbe
reading of a selection from tbe Bible, prayer
by a clergyman of the neighborhood, read
ings, recitations and songs by the pnpiia,
aa address by the teacher or other citizen of
the district interested in the work of the
day, will afford variety and serve to rendet
the occasion more interesting and impres
sive. Let every teacher organize bis school for
the work, and. in consultation, with the di
rector, have the grounds properly prepared,
and holes ready for trees, and shrubs and
vines, and Cowers. Solicit the co-operation
of the whole neighborhood. Should the
day appointed prove inclement and unfit
for the work, postpone it until the follow
ing Saturday.
