Ci-tAB Ur. This month is a good time to
clean np all the machines and farming tools
and put them away for the winter. A good
coating of oil npon the iron-work to keep it
from rusting and a coat of paint on wood-
work to preserve it from the weather will
make them almost as good as new next
year that is if they are good now. This
applies to farm carts and wagons as well as
to other implements. There is no better
month for painting than this, as the paint
dries moderately and makes a hard, dry
coat, much better than it does if spread in
the hot days of July and August.
The pat
ent ready-mixed paints are so easily ob-
tained and used by a tpro in the business,
,na are so good that there is no excuse for
not using enough of them to keep things
looking well and nicely covered from the
weather. Of course, while this work is be
ing done, it will be natural to see that all
implements are in good order before paint
ing, with all bolts, screws, ard other part
all right.
A Gbeat NcwsPAfEB, The Pall Mall Ga
zrtte, ol London, England, did not overstate
the case when it said that The New York
TadepeniUnt is "one of the ablest weeklies in
existence." It is as overwhelming as a
monthly or quarterly magazine, with all the
matter in its many departments. Any
monthly might indeed be proud if it could
show as distinguished a list of contributors
as Tm In&epndtnt. In a single department
its story department we find, among
Englishmen, such contributors as Sir Sam
nel W. Baker, the celebrated Egyptian ex-
p!rer ; Thomas Hardy, Norris, James
rayn, F. W. Robinson and Henry W. Lucy,
the well-known and deservedly popular
novelists; while among Americans we no
tice the names ot Edward Everett Hale,
Frank R. Stockton, II. H. Boyesen, Sarah
O. Jewett, J. 8.. of Dale, Rebecca Harding
Davis and Harriet Prescott Spoflbrd. The
In-lrjtrndent printed also, receully, tl.e last
story from the pea of the late Ivan Tour
genetr. having secured the only translation
from the Russian into English. This de
partment is tut a sample of the others. It
would seem to ns that TTke Independent offers
not only 'fifty-two dividends during the
year," but, in addition, a stock dividend
with each department. We ad vise our read-
