Messrs. F. W. Biesecker and F. J. Kooser

Goisu Home Disui'sted. The Italian and
Hungarian laborers are not meeting with
great success in Pennsylvania. Large num
bers of those who were discharged from the
workings of the South Pennsylvania rail
road, in the vicinity of Mann's Choice, Bed
ford county, arrived in Huntingdon Tues
day evening. They procured tickets there
for Xew York, and expressed their inten
tion of returning home. Quite a number of
them are reported as having large families
and very little money. To these foreigners
America is evidently not a land flowing
with milk and honey. Alloona Tribune.
Chestnuts have been in market about
two weeks. They are small, poorly devel
oped and tasteless. Whether the late sup
ply will be any better, remains to be seen.
It is said that the trees are full of burs, but
many of them contain nothing but worth
less hulls. Along tbe foot of the mountains
the nuts seem to be plentier than elsewhere.
There are some on the sides, too. but the
trees on the top did not bare any. This is
attributed to the laid Spring frosts, and the
condition of the nuts is due, those well
Hted say, to the long drought. Tlie ship
ments from this place have not been up to
those of former years. They are a drug in
the market, and are selling at five cents per

The home of Josiah Kretchnian, a short
distance from Xew Centreville, was discov
ered to be on fire about 2 o'clock last Friday
morning. The flames spread rapidly, and
nothing could be done to save the building.
Mr. Kretchnian rushed into the house to
save his youngest child, who had been for
gotten in the hurried exit of the family. He
was met at the door by Mr. Philip Weigly,
who had the child in his arms. Mr. Kretch
nian ran past Weigly into the burning
building, it is thought to secure some money
that was known to be kept there. He was
never seen alive again. Cvercome by the
heat and smoke he sank down, and his
body was almost entirely consumed by the
flames. He leaves a wife and four small
hildren.
Death of Mbs. Wetasd- The death of
Mrs. Catharine J. Weyand, wife of 'Squire
William Weyand, occurred yesterday fore
noon at 8 o'clock, at the advanced age of 04
years, after a lingering illness of oyer a year.
I e ceased was born in Somerset county, Pa.,
in 1S20, and came to this city with her hus
band soon after her marriage in IS44. She
has resided in this city thirty-nine years,
and all of that time in tbe boae where she
died. She leaves a husband and four chil
dren to mourn her death, as follows: Will
and Al Weyand, Miss Mary L. Weyand,
and Mrs. W. A. Latham. She was a fond
mother and wife, and highly respected by
all her acquaintances. Bloomington (111.)
PmUatnrajtli. Mrs. Weyand was a daughter
of Peter Lare, who formerly resided on the
farm now owned by Daniel Kimiuell, on
the pike east of town.
Says the Altoona Trilmne : " The demo
cratic congressional conference practically
confessed that Congressman Campbell was
certain to be his own successor, when it
nominated Dr. Enfield, of Bedford county,
as his opponent. We wouldn't say a word
against Dr. Enlield. It is said that he is an
excellent citizen and a good sheriff. But he
is practically unknown in the district and
has no large personal following. He will
probably pole the average democratic vote,
and will go down under a majority ranging
from 1,000 to 2,OJ. This much is conceded
by tbe democratic leaders, and Dr. Enfield,
if he is a man of discernment, will probably
admit that be is merely running this year
for the fun of the thing. Gen. Campbell has
proven himself in the past a competent and
an independent representative. The district i
his interests that can be properly taken care I
of by him alone; his antagonist would be
powerless, even if willing. The people
know this, and will act accordingly. Dr.
Enlield will have to try it again some other
year.

There was a large and enthusiastic gath

foot townsliip, at Draketown, on Saturday
last. After raising a beautiful Blaine and
Lagan pole, a meeting was organized by the
selection of Thomas Ream, Esq., as Presi

Secretaries- Tbe meeting was then address

Fish eb's School Boos: Exchange. At
Fisher's Book Store, Somerset, you can buy
second-hand school books for much less
than tbe price of new ones. Second-hand
school books, if in good condition, and used
anywhere in the county, can be sold here or
exchanged for others. This will be an ex
cellent chance for teachers, pupils and par
ents to work off text-books for which they
have no use. A most extensive stock of
new school books and all kinds of school
supplies and reward cards always on tale.
Mail orders and inquiries solicited. Town
and country merchants supplied.
The Towkship Wiss The 8upreme Court
last week filed an opinion in tbe famous
Somerset township plow cise, reversing the
court below, and finding in favor of the
township. Most of our county readers will
remember the case as being an action
brought in the fall of 1S31 by James Parson
against the Supervisors of Somerset town
ship to recover $8.00 damages, done him by
the breaking of bis plow while working on
the road. Suit was originally brought be
fore Justice Lint, who gave judgment in
favor of the plaintiff for $8.). The case
was appealed and twice tried in Court, Mr.
Parson winning each time. It was finally
carried to the Supreme Court, and resulted
as above slated. Tbe case will cost Mr. Par
son about one hundred and fifty dollars.

At a regular meeting of the Brethren Sun

the fol owing resolutions were unanimously
adopted :
Whereas, The messenger of death has en

sister, Israel and 'Eliza Cober, and removed
from our midst their beloved son, Wilton
Willard, therefore
Ii&olved. That we bow humbly to Him
who doeth all things well, believing that
our loss is Wilton's gain.
Recced, That in the death of Brother Co

ber, the Sunday-school an active worker,
and the community an influential, moral
citizen.

The Republicans of Ljwer Turkeyfoot J
township raised a Blaine and Logan pole at
Draketown last Saturday. There were sev
eral speeches made. Lower Turkeyfoot
townsliip is going to do its whole duty this
time, and don't you forget it.
Mr. William Brown, a son of Rev. James
R. Brown, of this place, who has been in the
employ of the Balto. and Ohio Railroad
Company for a number of years, has been
appointed agent at this place. Mr. B. will
donbtless be acceptable to the public, as he
is well and favorably known to the people
here.
There are in tbe United States 53,852
manufacturing establishments, representing
an invested capital of $2,790,272,i.iU, of
which tbe Solid South owns $23,119.K82 and
45,So2 establishments. Tbe South is enti
tled to 151 electors, only 48 less than a
choice. At tbe last presidential election
she only cast 2,6oo,0M votes, of which 1.
531,064 were cast for Gen. Hancock, while
the North cast 6.2S,91, and 3,381,518 were
cast for Gen. Garfield. The colored popu
luion of the South is alout 6.000.000, en-
titling them to about forty electors, but it is
an incontrovertible fact that this entire pop
ulation is practically disfranchised when it
comes to voting. Tbe shot-gun and tissue
ballot get away with them. In the States of
South Carolina, Mississippi and Louisiana,
the colored population outnumbers the
white over 400,000, and yet those three
States gave Hancock a majority of 178.154
Totes. It is not at all likely that a fair elec
tion and an honest count would give such a
result. These three Southern States also
send 3' representatives to the National Con
gress, while Iowa and Wisconsin, with a
white population of 2,924,218, only send 20
representatives. l ne sixteen ooutnern
States are but small factors in the business
ndtistries of tbe country, but a power
democracy when it cornea te voting.
it not for the rebel South, the shot-gun
and tissue ballots, the Democracy would be
lost. Who can deny that the Republican
party represents tbe wealth, wisdom and in
telligence of the nation? A Republican
vote represents wealth, intelligence and pro
tection to American capital and labor, and a
Democratic vote represents poverty, igno
rance, and protection to British capital and
labor, and frauds upon the ballot-box.
