Judge Arnold announced a few rules for the filling of vacancies in election boards, which election officers will do well to observe : When a vacancy exists in any board, or when new divisions are formed, the court will fill the vacancy, if application is made ten days before the election. If the judge of election does not attend on the morning of the election, or if there was a tie in the vote for judge in the Spring election, the majority insector shall appoint a judge ; if the majority inspector does not attend the judge shall appoint an inspector in his place ; and it the minority inspector does not attend, the person who received the sec ond highest number of votes for judjje at ths Spring election shall act as inspector. It a vacancy continues to exist in the election board for one hour after Jhe time for opening the polls, the voters present shall fill the va cancy by a curbstone election. No votes should be received until the election board is complete and duly sworn in. Each in spector shall appoint one clerk, who must be a voter in the division. Appointed elec tion officers and clerks bold over for the spring election, unless removed for disiiuali fying cause. Emtor Herald: 1 notice in a communi cation from Somerset to one of the leading Democratic paiers, the statement that the nomination of Gen. Jacob M. Campbell for Congress in this (the 17th) District, is unsat isfactory to the Republicans of Jenner town ship, and that he will not receive their sup port. Being in a position to know the feelH ingofthe Republicans of this township. 1 do not hesitate to Kay that this statement, let it come from whatever source it may, is entirely without foundation. No nomina tion could have been made that would have been more satisfactory to the Republicans of this township, than that of Gen. Camp bell. We are proud f the record he has made in the past as a thoroughly honest and faithful representative, and when the returns come in yon will find that Jenner stands as she has always stood, loyal to the Republican tarty. The same would have been done had either of the other gentlemen whose names were before the conference re ceived the nomination. We believe in ma jority rule, and when the majority of Re publicans have spoken, whether by their ballots at the primary, or their representa tives in conference or convention, the Re publicans of Jenner township will ratify their action at the polls. Yours Respectfully, Jaml M. Cover. Jenner X Roads, October 2, ISM. Editor Herald: Saturday, September 3:h, was a gala day at Jenner. In the morning there was a gatue of base ball be tween t lie students from the normal school and the Jennertown nine, which resulted in a victory for the former. In the afternoon there was a picnic in Covode's grove, below the Cros3 Roads, and in the evening there was a grand musical and literary soiree in the Presbyterian church at Jennertown. Miss Eva Griffith was desirous of showing what progress had been made by her class in their first quarter, and the result was very gratifying to the audience, and very flattering to both teacher and class. The music, both vocal and instrumental, was all that could reasonably have been expected, and in some cases exceeded the most san guine expectations of all. The literary part of the exercises consisted of the reading, by Miss Kate O'Connor, of " Curfew Shall Not King To-night," and was fully appreciated by the audience. "How Ruby Played"' was recittl by Mr. Frank O'Connor, and elicited much applause. Miss Nettie Gaul's rendering of the " New ChuLh Organ " was very pleasing, and wvriVu the echo. "Wedded to Art" was the piece assigned your humble servant to read. Modesty for bids further comment. The entertainment. as a whole, was a success, and did credit to all concerned. Miss Griffith deserves the thanks qf the whole community for her suc cessful effort, and it is the wish of all pres ent that she will ere long favor us with an other entertainment. Sta lwart, It xotukb Pols Raisisu. Vn hatunlay afternoon, the 2, thinst., a large number of the citizens of Quemahon ing and Jenner townships met at the store of Wm. Zimmerman, near Homer's church, and erected a beautiful Blaine and Logan (xjle. Just as the pole reached a perpendic ular position, a large eagle was noticed cir cling in the air, immediately above it, rising higher and higher, nr.til it disappeared above the clouds a fit emblem of the victo ry which the Republican party is sure to achieve on the 4th of November, when James G. Blaine, the world-renowned states man, and his MTles3 associate, John A. Ixigan. rising above the clouds of mud and dust which the Democratic party has made a characteristic of this campaign, will be el evated to the highest places in the gift of hi American people. As soon as the poie was firmly planted the stars and stripes were run up, and the salutation of three cheers was given with a gusto that attested the enthusi asm of the crowd. A procession was then formed, and the entire crowd proceeded to the large building erected by the Vnion Brass Band, where a meeting was organized by the election of illiam Zimmerman, Sr., as President, and John Zimmerman, Valen tine Miller, Henry Shaffer, Sr., and Philip Mowry, Vice Presidents. The President, in a brief but fitting speech stated the object of the meeting, when Prof. . B. Crit?hfleld was called to the platform, and fur one hour entertained the meeting with an able dis enssion of the questions at issue in the pres ent campaign. It was an occasion of pleas ure to all, and the presence of both old and young proved that the Republicans of this section are deeply in arnest, Voter. Beotiier-vallet Items. Chestnuts are very plenty here this fall, bat then there ore about ten worms for every chestnut. We had several heavy fbwers of rain last Saturday and Sunday nights, in this section, which were thrice welcome. The potato crop is a full one, and they are selling at forty cents a bushel. E. L. Cook is shipping them of by the car load. The Republicans are pleased with the nomination of Uncle Jake Campbell, the staunch protectionist, and this township will give him a rousing majority. The only effect the famous Mulligan let ters have over this way, is that they are nerving up every Republican, and turr.ing sensible Democrats to his support. The following is the death roll in thh township since our last report: William Co ber, aged 20 years ; Oliver Hoyle, aged 21 years. Both young men died of typhoid fever. Edmund Glessner and Emma Schrock are down with typhoid fever, bat nnder the ef fiieient treatment of Dr. J. K. Miller, the pa tients will certainly recover. There are also a few cases ot the same disease in Berlin. Farmers are complaining that a large pro portion of the wheat sown this fall failed to germinate on account of the drought, and some talk of re-seeding. We think they had better wait and see. The late rains may cause the balance to liven np. Now abd This. Mb. Eiiitob : I write to inrorni you of a wonderful phenomenon that occurred at Mi. Moriah on the night of the 4th of October. The rumor came to Stoystown on Sunday morning, (the place where I was stopping) that a spring on the cast side of Mt. Moriah (about 3 miles west of Stoystown) had be come a small creek. Having never heard of the like, especially in so dry a season as this, I determined to see for myself. I, in com pany with another gentleman drove out and found the rumor not only to be a true one, but far above our sanguine expectations. Mr. Lape says that on Saturday night, about fifteen minutes of twelve o'clock they heard a racket and went out to see what caused it, when they discovered everything nnder water. Everything in the spring house was afloat. Many things were destroyed, among which was the milk, cucumber pickles, but ter and one-half barrel of mackerel. Some of the fish and pickles were found one and one-half miles down stream. The spring bouse wall was washed oat almost enough to let the building down and is not safe to letstand. The owner, Philip Lape said he would tear it down on Monday morning, providing it didn't fall down during the night. The water is now flowing from an excavationin the g roundabout the size of a human body, as cold as ice and as clear as crystal. No reason can be assigned for this phenomenon. The springs were nearly dry for the month previous to this. All the springs on the east and north side (about one dozen in number) have an increase of water to-day, but not in proportion. The springs on the south and west side are not affected at all. Some subterraneous action must have occurred in the Mount. I never felt better satisfied on a Sunday trip than I did on this one, and I feel confi dent that a trip to Mt. Moriah will repay any one. I never will forget the place and name Mt. Moriah. Yours truly, Asiibiw J. Miller. Thk Caui-aios in Jenner. Everybody ijf Earxest. Gbasd Demonstration oh Satcrdat the 4th. Ed. Herald: Allow me through your paper, to give a brief ac count of the progress of the campaign in Jenner Township. The Blaine and Logan Club at Jenner Cross Roads was one of the first to organize in the county, and from the date of its or ganization to the present, it lias held stated meetings every two weeks. The object of these meetings has been to keep the work closely organized and to see that every man who appreciates the unprecedented prosper ity secured to our Government through the administration of its affai-s by the Republi can party for the last quarter of a century, shall be prepared to exercise his right of sov ereignty at the ballot box on the 4th of No vember. At its regular meeting on Saturday even ing the 27th nit., theclub voted toinyite the Republicans of Jenner and the adjoining townships to unite with them in raising pole, on Saturday the 4th inst, and the Chairman of the County Commitiee was asked to furnish speakers for the occasion. The response to this invitation was beyond the expectations even of the most sanguine. At an early hour on Saturday afternoon the streets of our yillage were so crowded as to make it almost impossible to pass with" a team. At half-past 2 o'cock the committee who had in charge the preparation of the pole reported all things in readiness, and in less than 2 minutesapole which for beauty cannot be excelled, 140 feet in length, was pointing heavenward. After a few animating pieces of music by the bands present the crowd were called as nearly together as was practicable, and an organization was effected by the election of the following otliecrs : President, Hon. Dan iel Stufft ; Vice Presidents, Jonas Maurer, Adam S. Shaffer, Jesse Witt, Noah Gohn, and Jacob Friedline : Secretaries, Wm. S. Morgan, John H. Zimmerman and Henry Hoffman. A committee on Resolutions was also appointed consisting of N. B. Critch field, Wm. S. Morgan, Levi Griffith, Noah S. Miller and F. J. Kooser. As arrangements had been made for a 'grand rally" and torch-light procession at the Borough of Jennertown in the evening the meeting at the Cross Roads had to be short. Brief and stirring speeches were made hovever by Messrs. Daniel J. Horner, Ed. B. Scull ami F. J. Kooser, who under stood that their heaviest guns were to be held in reserve for the evening meeting. At the close of the speaking, N. B. Critch- field from the committee on Resolutions of fered the following report : Renolctd, That we the Republicans of old Jenner, proud of our connection with the party that saved this I'nion, that establish ed freedom throughout the land and equal rights under the law to every citizen of this government, that made our currency stable and carried the country through an unpar alleled period of trouble and anxiety to the foremost osition among the nations of the earth in wealth, strength, and prosperity, recognizing the necessity that the affairs of the government shall still be adminis tered by that party, do hereby renew to her our pledges of fidelity and promise that to the interests as James G. Blaine and Jonn A. Logan the able representatives of this grand old Republican party shall be given our ceaseless labors from now until 7 o'clock of the evening of the 4th of No vember next, liftoired. That we recognize in the renoiu ination of Gen. Jacob M. Campbell as our Congressional candidate, a merited tribute to an able, worthy and faithful represtmta tive, and to bim we pledge our most hearty and undivided support Retuhtd, That we recognize in our candi dates for the State Legislature and the other county Officers the choice of the Republican voters of Somerset County and men who are in every respect well qualified for the josts for which they have been named, and to them we pledge our undivided support. In the evening a grand torch light pro cession paraded the streets of Jennertown after which a meeting was organized by the election of the following officers : President, Henry Maurer ; Vice Presi dents, Solomon Bowman, Solomon Judy, Benjamin Enos and John Biesecker. Sec retaries, David Maurer. Jacob Kautz. N. B. Critchfield and Henry Kline, Capt. Ed. B. Scull was then introduced, and in his usual pleasant style entertain eU the meeting for three quarters of an hour or more, with a discussion 01 the merits and demerits of tl.e candidates presented by both parties. F. J. Kooser. Esq., followed in a speech of about the same length, devoted mainly to a discussion of the tariff issue. Music was furnished for the occasion by the Farmer's Band and the Union Brass Band, The meeting was adjourned with three cheers for Blaine and Logan, three for Gen. Addison township is the place where the Democracy talk politics the whole year round. It matters rot whether there is campaign on band or not, they never quit. Nearly all the local items from Addison are more or less tainted with politics, yet there will be a big falling off in the Democratic vote this full.
