n A new railroad from Somerset to Johns
town is one of the probabilities of the near
future. The South Pennsylvania Railroad
people, it seems, are not inclined to pay the
tolls demanded by the Balto. and Ohio for
the transportation of their iron and other
materials, and are seriously considering the
advisability of building a branch rottd from
their line north or Somerset, to Johnstown.
As the freights of the Cambria Iron Com
pany ami the city of Johnstown run way
up into the ciphers, the Vanderbilt people
are anxious to get at least a share of them.
If it is concluded to build the road, it is
probable that what is known as thu Qucma
honing route through Jenner township will
be taken. This road would opjn up a new
section of Somerset oounty, and one rich in
natural resources. Speed the day or its
undertaking and completion.

Weak Sioht and Glasses Da.ngeb or
Weabikc iMi-EKfECT Foci's. To the close
student, and the professional man, the sight
is the main reliance, and among these are
the most complaints of weak sight. In the
sense so used ' weak sight " is a relative
term, no: meaning absplute impossibility of
seeing to the extent apparent, but a physic
ally mechanical defect of refraction which,
when corrected, the previously weak sight
becomes as strong as the strongest, Hence
the very gn at importance of accurate ad
justment of glasses, the only means of cor
recting the defective refraction, on which
the weak sight depends. A perfect eye with
jn-rfect relraction, will neyertire or weaken,
so a weak sight, made perfect by erfect ad
justment of glasses, never tires by use. Xo
person not thoroughly conversant practical
ly with optics and optical defects, should
think or wearing glasses without first con
sulting the oculiat. Thousands of eys are
ruined every year by so doing. lur readers

Friday, the loth of August, the Catholic
Church celebrated the feast of the Assump
tion of the Blessed Virgin. It is commem
orative of her body having been borne into
heaven without having sulfered the stain or
corruption. The feast of the Assumption
was established sometime previous to the
sixth century, and is alwavs celebrated
with great pomp and fervor. It is a holy
day or obligation for Catholics. Tne Ital
ian and Hungarian laborers on the line Of
the South Pennsylvania Railroad, who are
nearly all members or the Catholic Church,
refused to do any work on that day. In the
absence ora church, it was treated by them
as a holiday. Several hundred or them
congregated at the Weyand firm, and held
a shooting match. A purse ot three hun
dred dollars was suspended from a string,
and the marksman took his stand one hun
dred yards distant and lircd at the string,
the man that cut the string to take the
money. The marksmanship of some oijthe
men was wonderful, and the shooting was

Among the articles in the .Wfi American
Iiciicip for September, three in particular
merit the serious consideration or everyone
who studies the tendencies or our govern
ment. The leading one is by Bishop J. Lan
caster Spalding, who insists that the only
sure 'Basis or Popular Government'' is mor
ality, not culture or the intellect, nor uni
versal suffrage, nor the development or ma
terial resources ; and that if the country is
to be saved from ruin, there must be a return
to the uncompromising moral code of the
rounders of New England. The poiicy of
"The Exclusion of the Chinese" is advocat
ed by John H. Durst, who presents a strik
ing array of forcible arguments against
Mongolian immigration. Four distinguish
ed writers on political economy, namely,
David A. Wells, Thomas G. Sherman, J. B.
Sargent, and Prof. W. G. Sumner, set forth,
from nearly every conceivable point or view,
the "Evils orthe Tariff System''; and it is
announced that in the Jieciew tor October
several writers or no less distinction wiliex
hibit the "Benefits or the Tariff System."
The other articles in the current number are
'The Demand or the Industrial Spirit," by
Charles Dudley Warner ; "Inspiration and
n fallibility," by the Ray. Dr. J. JL Rylance ;
' The Need or Liberal Divorce Laws," by
Elizabeth Cady Stanton ; and "Our Remote

event with heartiness and an euthusiasm
which cannot but make this year's meeting
one of the happiest and most thoroughly
enjoyable known since the organization of
the Society. Each and every inhabitant
appears to look upon it as a bounden and,
at the same time, joyous duty to make the
gallant soldier boys believe there can he no
place like "the Queen City," If more than
one of the whilom lads in blue leaves not
his heart with the girl he left behind him in
the lovely town, it will not be the fault of
t lie famed belis of Cumberland. Big, open-
hearted and hospital iople, there will be
s jch an opening of doors and so great the
multiplicity of lath-strings hanging on the
outside, that the boys will wonder if they
