It was in 1S30 that the first t wen- ty miles of road were -built, and between that date and 1SC0 there were 9,090 miles in full operation, or an average of 100 miles jier year In the nex ten years, ending in lfttu, there were added 21,690 miles, leryear, and since 1SG0, a period of twenty four years, there was further added 121,813 mi I en or a trifle more than 5, WO per year. The capital represented in the construction and operation of this great system is seven and one-half billions of dollars, (,5'25,i3S, :i,) and the effect of this capital in the ap preciation of other property is represented at about $H,(X,00O,0'jO. At.UPbos, Iowa, June 21, 184. J KioTou Hur.Ai.D : 'nr .Sit- .'Thinking perhaps a few words from the "busy west" might be of some interest to the readers of your paer, I will sicnd a few moments in writing a short let ter for their benefit. We are having beautiful weather, and the prospect for an abundant crop is much bet- ter than it has been for several years. Rye and winter wheat is almost ready to harvest Imt our principal crop is the corn, which in- deed looks encouraging. If nothing hap- pens to the crop before time to gather it in, this country is going to have a boom. Our town has grown and improved con sifltra'.ly during the past year, and now lias a (Herniation of over two thousand. It is only live years old, and when it was started all this country was a vast, unbroken, and unsettled prairie, but hen the railroad came thronph here the people came through here by the hundreds, and now all the coun try for miles around is converted into mag nificent and beauiiful farms. It seems as if nature had favored the people here with a heaping measure of comfort to begin with. The rich and fertile soil, and tne beautiful streams which furnish water for stuck, and the healthful climate, all help make the place a uwt desirable one to live in. The neighborhoods are mostly made up of peo- pie from the F-astern States, who are of good character and full of energy. And by the way, we have a great many people here front Pennsylvania, whom we, ot course, think help make our town and county belter. lur county is Republican from the ground up. You can hardly find Democrats enough for mile posts. We heartily endorse the nominations made at the Chicago Conven tion. Blaine and Logan will get the full Repub lican vote here, and a number of Democrats have declared that they will vote the straight Republican ticket, and help elect men who are worthy of being leaders of the American people. I think perhaps I have written enough for this time, and will close with the hope and expectation of meeting you and many of your readers before another year bas passed away. Most Respectfully Yours, W.S. Bell. - . . .- t - For Sale. Next week things become lively in Chicago again, and the gathering of the clans will be accompanied by the throng of lookers-on and general sight-seers which will convert the Garden City into a very Paris of brilliancy. It is not to be wondered at that the remarkably low rates made over the entire system of the B. A (). should be attended by so large an outpour ing of people. Over the whole line from the Atlantic, the glorious Chesapeake and the great rivers to the lakes, the rate is but one half the regular fare, or one fare for the round trip. The tickets go upon sale at all stations on July 3rd, remaining on sale every day to and including the 7th, good for use any day and upon any train to and including the 8th. 1 hence on the tickets are good for return trip at any time up to and including July ltu. Every accommo- dation is being provided by the railroad company to insure the utmost satisfaction and comfort of the patrons and nothing will be left undone to complete such preparations as will render the most complete success certain. Elegant B. A O. sleepers will be attached to all through trains, and not only will they make the trip without change, but new and most comfortable regular coaches as well. When it conies to time, the B. A O. has a which has never been equal'cd, and wen safety is considered, no road in the wor,j equals its record for upwards of a half a century. The B. A O. depot in Chicago is Dy an ads the most advantageously located ad the best arranged in that city. Those who have traveled know what it is to be in a crowded union depot, with the trains of a half dozen roads coming in and going out ; everybody's baggage heaped up indiscrim inately, and employes so harrassed and both, ered by countless questions as to be in con dition to answer none of them to the point. The passenger becomes if anything more mixed, and ten to one gets on the wrong train, has the check for some other fellow's trunk, and upon the wfiole wishes he had neyer been born. At the Chicago depot of the B.- 0. there is none of this confusion, no wrangling, pulling or hauling. No trains but its own come in or go out. No baggage piled up of other roads, and everything so systematically arranged that getting on the wrong trainjor a jumbled condition of things in any respect is impossible. The depot im mediately adjoins the Exposition building, it being Ihardly two minutes' walk to the gr,nd structure which, being the scene of . .: :ii 1.. ..l..lt. ... 1. both Conventions, will undoubtedly mrrk tne 8pot where the next President's name is finally made certain.
