The Conference held its session in the Luth eran church Itev. J. A. Vnruh pastor. A goodly number of the ministers and lay members of Conference we-e present at the oieiiing session. In the absence of the President of Conference, Kev. J. W. Poflin berger, through sickness in his family, Itey A. M. Whetstone preached th-5 introductory sermon on Tuesday evening to a large ami attentive audience, taking as his text John 14-, and the theme, Christ the Way, was very clearly and earnestly presented and explained. Itev. J. W. Tressler assisted in the evening services. On Wednesday morning, May 7th, at 8:30 Conference met, and after devotional exer cises was duly organized by the election of Itev. J. H. Zinn as President protrm and Ucv. E. M. Huhler as Scretary pro tern. Thirteen (13) ministers were in attendance with as many lay delegates ; from the differ ent pastorates within the bounds of Confer ence, two ministers of Conference were absent. The first topic discussed before the Conference in the morning session was The Means of Grace, What are They? which was introduced by a good essay on the subject by Kev. 11. Smith and Itev. J. W. Tressler followed with another good paiier on the Adaptation and Efficacy of the Means of Grace. This topic elicited juite an interesting and an animated discus sion. At 2 p. in. Wednesday, Conference con vened in its noon session when the Temper- ance Uuestion was discussed . uev. j. m. Snyd.r spoke upon the Present and Future of Prohibition and Itev. J. P. Shearer upon )nr duly with regard to present License Laws. At this t.ta;;e of the discussion Rev. A.S. Bunigardner, one of the Temierance apostles and advocates of Somerset county and organizer for the State Constitutional Temperance Amendment Association, was admitted as an adyisory member of Confer ence, and addressed the Convention on Temperance and Prohibition. The Liquor Trallic received a very "severe handling" at the hands of those who sjoke on the sub- iect ; the evils of the business were exposed and the character and merits of "Prohibi tion ' were forcibly presented. All present were convinced of the great cvilsof Licensed Wliiskev and thev went away satisfied and jiersuaded that Constitutional Prohi bition was the only radical cure far the ltum Curse. On Wednesday evening at S o'clock anoth er large assembly awaited the ojiening of the evening session of Conference. Itev. M. K Pfahler addressed Conference on the sub jectFamily Worship, a Scriptural Duty. After others had spoken on the importance and duty of the observance of Family Wor- sliio ihe iiroeramme of the onference was - i . . changed somewhat fur the financial interest and benefit of the Lutheran church in which Conference held its sessions. An effort was made to secure funds to complete the build ing of the church edifice. Itevs. A. M. Whet stone and J. F. Shearer, two good yoke fellows in the rare art of getting after and at money, were selected as a "soliciting Com mittee." And they were a good, lively committee, who made use of every lawful means to reach the hearts and the purses of Ihe bearers, arguments from an uiifinislixl church to the persuasive influence of anec dote and fable wrought iiion the mystic powers of the purse-string. A good sub scription list was started, and about f pm were collected before the large congregation was dismissed and many hearts went away glad. On Thursday morning Conference again convened at :W o'clock and after one-half hour spent in devotional services the follow ing questions were discussed, viz; "What Qualifications requisite to (. liurfi .Member ship?" by Key. J. A. Nuner, mid "Wo man's Work in the Church "by Itev. E. M. Hubler, who read an excellent essay upon the subject. Many good and truthful things were said by the members of Conference Ukip the purity, sweetness and ennobling influence of woman, the angel of world. church and home, but these sentiments secerned to be only the preface to a scene both solemn and impressive. Already on Wednesday, the day previous, it was whis pered through the silent hamlet of lloovers ville that a wedding was upon the tapis, and your reporter caught tbtt whisjier from afar. All this proved to be true, and the re ality was now to be demonstrated in this scene as the proof. The president of Confer ence stopped the discussion of all questions involving the marriage of Conference to llooversville, when two young persons ap peared in our midst to be wedded right there to each other. Mr. Joseph W. Buchanan of llooversville led Miss Clara A., the talented and accom ulished daughter of Itev. J. X. Fnruh, to the altar when they were made one in holy wedlock by the father of the bride, as sisted in the ceremonies by Kev. J. F. Shearer. Many good heartfelt wishes and congratulations gn with the happy couple in their wedded life. May their journey be joyous and jirosjierous together until the closing hours of a jieaceful old age. At 2 r. M. T-hursday, Conference convened again, and the following subjects were dis cussed in well-prepared and able papers "Proper Subjects of Baptism" by Itev. J F. Kuhlman. "The Mode of Baptism" by Itev. J. II. Zinn. It was conclusively shown that infants, as well as adult believers, are proper subjects of baptism, and that no par- ticuler mode is essential to the validity of the ordinance. This church question was thoroughly and impartially discussed and the right of choice of Christian liberty fully- allowed. The Committee on Resolutions reported and presented the following among other resolutions for the serious consideration of the Lutheran people of Somerset county, viz: Whereas, Believing that the system pre vailing in our State of licensing the sale of alcoholic liquors is one of the greatest of present evils, and the source of useless taxa tion, of poverty, lawlessness and crime, we express the sense of this Conference in tiie following resolutions : Firat, That an amendment to our State Constitution, prohibiting the manufacture and sale of ail alcoholic liquors is tlu only cure for the evils of intemperance, and that this movement of the Tetniierance issue commend itself to the influence and support of all Christian people, and members of our churches. Second, That we fully recognize the effi ciency and influence of the work of the Wo men's Christian Temperance Cniotis in the cause of Temperance and Prohibition, and cjmtnend their efforts among our church people and pledge them our personal sym pathy and influence. Third, That the pastors of Conference be and are hereby requested to preach on the subject of Temperance before the next meet ing of Conference. Fourth, That these resolutions, (having reference to temperance) be published in the Lutheran jitrrrcr and Ecnn-jrlitt, and in our county papers ; and that the pastors of Conference read the same to their people from the pulpit. At noon to-day Edward Jewell, a school boy, going to bishonae in a flat in Harlem, found two men in a hallway stand ing over a third, whom they said was drunk. Ha went up stairs, and looked back, saw the men turn the prostrate man's pocket inside out, cut his watch guard, take off his shoes and coatand roll them in a bundle and go away. The boy told his mother. Dwellers in the flat went down, and found the man to be black in the face, with protruding tongue. He was dead within less than an hour. Three men entered a saloon in the neighborhood, drank some beer, began quarreling about money, then tw attacked the third, knocked him senseless and kicked him, and ran away. The saloon keeper told a boy, who saw the tight, to follow them, and when he found policeman, have them arretted. The men boarded a car. The boy chased the car 11 blocks and met a policeman, who arrested tho men. II took them to the station house, where thev were recognized as Jim Grady and Mike Iiearn, notorious characters. While thev were stand ing before the rie&k a dead man was brought in. The prisoners turned pale, and Grady dropped a pocket book to the floor. The dead man proved to be Joseph IJarling. He proved to be the man who had been choked to death, and in the pocket- book was bis name, i he school boy Jewell identified the two men as those he had seen in the hallway standing over the- man who they said was drunk. Meanwhile the man left unconscious in the saloon had been taken to the hospital. The school boy recognized him as the third of the hallway trio. His name is Michael Haley.
