A valuable improvement on the fish hook
has been invented by a southern sjiortsman.
About mill way up the shaft of the hook he
places a small cross bar, which serves three
purposes. First, it prevents the fish from
swallow ing the hook ; second, it increases,
the chances of capture, from the reason that
when a lis!, strikes his nose against the pro
jection he involuntarily closes his mouth,
aud so is securely caught ; and third, it
prevents the bait from slipping up the hook
and thus removes from the art of angling
its chief provocation to strong language.
