Dmb Herald .We believe that memory
is the only paradise out of which we can
never he driven. Fourteen months, or
more have rolled away into blissful eterniiy
(?) fcince my last letter to the Hkralii. Pos
sibly we are something like unto the thorn
called "stop-aw hile," as we write but once a
year, and doubtless we milit with proprie
ty be called " Once-in-A white." Hut there
is somethin;, splendid in humanity that
wiil no! always mit'.d. It must he cither
disobedience or independence, and one ot
the-e two tilings mu-' eventually save at
least a portion of mankind.
At this season of year the tide on the
" business sea " (lows slowly along, but we
are not without the music of American in
du:try. Indeed, the snnke of industry
keep the industrial sky bright and hope
ful. The principal feature about this city,
whose name signities height, is its debt.
P.ut slowly and surely it is being li iiiidat .-o.
During last week, in our court of justice, a
verdict was given against this city in favor
of two contractor for n:r!y tTGX No
where can he found a better system of
"(reenbaek doctrine " than in the munici
pal atlairs of this city. The common coun
cil properly issues orders, c.iunter-i;;ned by
Kul Load Nlws.
Last week Charles McFadden, jr., began
work on two ol the cuts on the South Term
Ko2d east of the Allegheny tunnel. A large
lot of horses, mules and materials were ship
jicd over the P. i I'. K. IL, consigned to
Mc Faddcn at Mann's Choice. From there
they were taken across the country to the
joii.t where work is to begin. Shanties
have b"en jiut. lift ami the men are now on
the ground and at work. Mr. Mi I'adden
will do all the heavy work on tiie line be
tween the tunnel and New Baltimore.
A meeting of the South Penn company
was held last week at llarrisburg, but no one
can get information as to what was done.
At the New York otlice, ia answer to an in
quiry a to whether the company thought of
abandoning the road, the officials gave an
emphatic denial, and stated that the con
tracts had been given for all of the the tun
nels and in due time the public would be
informed as to who were to get the contracts
for the other work along the line of the
road. They further stated that the orders
were to pnh the work as fast as possible,
and that the company expected to have
trains running from one end ofthe line to
the other by the end of l-Sii.
A correspondent ofthe Fulton lletaurrnt
thus describes how the work is prosecuted at
Sidein Hill: "The .".puroaches are made by
tabling the surface about twenty-four to
thirty feet wide. Across the breast of this
table a number of dynamite charges are
placed abouf four fett from the brink, and
cijlit or nine feet deep. These charges are
exploded simultaneously with a battery.
With the explosion a bluish-gray column
with dark specks of stone rises from two
hundred and fifty tsi three hundred feet in
the air. Tiie debris bring carted away,
another table is formed, which is treated in
the same way until the required grade is
reached."
Uunning out of church before the congre
gation is dismissed is a detestable practice,
and is practiced entirely too much in our
diiferent churches. It does appearto us that
when those iii atteudencu have remained
until the liei.edii tioti is about to be pronoun,
ced thev could 'surely manage in some way
to remain until the congregation is dismiss
ed and retire orderly. And another suggest
tion we have to offer is this : Don't put on
your overcoats until ail of the services are
concluded. If you were to tit up front,
where you could have a good view ofthe
congregation, and see how it Iooks to wit
ness about fifty persons drawing on their
overcoats just at a period when order should
prevail, is anything but a pleasant sight.
