It is understood that the authorities of the
Baltimore A Ohio Railroad Company are
considering the advisability of running a
train through from Johnstown to Baltimore,
leaving Johnstown about 6:30 a. m , and ar
riving in the Monumental City about 3:30
p. m. To make this time the rate of travel
would have to be in the neighborhood of 39
miles per hour.
An exchange says the latest game out is

thus: Take sheet of writing paper, write
your name and address thereon, fold it
around a bank note large enough to pay all

newspaper, and then forward it to the edi

Monday evening of last week a Mr. Geo.

parties dropped into the store, and it was
some little time before Mr. Benford was able

One of the most simple, useful and prac
ticable applications of electricity, which has
yet been given to the public, is embodied in
the new invention of the Portable Electric
Light Company. The little machine whicu
is now attracting so much deserved atten
tion is a small electrical contrivance which
performs the duties of lighter and a burglar
alarm. As a ligher it can be arranged to
produce instantaneous light throughout the
house, and ran also be attached to a medical
galvanic coil by which a powerful current of
electricity can be conveyed. The instrumt
s small and compact, occupying a sw
only five inches square, and can readily be
carried from room to room, as it weighs, but
five Munds. In the second capacity when
attached to window, safeordistr, the unlail
'ing current places the trespasser in a decid
edly embarrassing position, confronting
such a party with a startling bell and in
stant light. It is equally adapted for the
ordinary uses of a cail bell.
Many prominent business men are inter
ested in the company, which was incorpor
ated under the law of Massachusetta Or
ders or inquiries should be addressed to the
business office, No. 22 Water street. The in
strument is sold at the low price of five dol
lars for the ligher; ten dollarscomplete with
attachments. Button Cttumg Star.
The .YwvA American f.'etine for March
lens with an article on "Money in Elec
tions," by Henry George, who brings to the
discussion of that hackneyed enljcct a con
tribution full of originalities, Ireshnesi and
keen insight; he points out with admirable
clearness one source of our political ills.
and proposes a remedy that seems both em
inently practicable and efficient. Robert
S. Taylor write of the "Subjugation of the
Mississippi," work which, in hi opinion,
and in that of the Mississippi Commission,
of which he is a member, can be accom
plished only by employing for the pnrnose
of straf ghtening and deeping the nhsnnel,
the forces developed by the river. M'mmre
I). Conway contributes a very striking stndy
of Gladstone as a man and a statesmen,
showing how even the more or less sinister
moral and intellectual traits of his nature,
quite as much as his pre-eminent native
force and elevation of character, conspire to
make him the foremost Englishman of hi
time. Hon. George W. Julian' "Railway
Influence in the Land Office" is a grave, jn
dicial exposure of the practices which,
against the manifest intent of the law
and the determination of the highest
court, have won for corporation millions
upon million of acres of the public
domain. Richard A. Proctor wri'es of
the "Pyramid of Cheops ;" Trof. Wra. G.
Sumner of "Protective Taxes and Wages ;"

In the Herald for some time, from this
neck o' woods, and fearing lest your many

we take thi opportunity of making it

The season for planting potatoes, corn
ic, is fast approaching aud farmers, in buy
ing fertilizers, should buy the one that gives
the best results tor ihe smallest amount of
money. "Fossil Marl" is just such a fertil
izer. It does not grow a large and useless
stock or vine, but gives the plants a nature1
steady growth, with the same result as you
would obtain from good barn yard manure;
and every farmer known what a fertilizer
good barn yard manure is. Fossil Marl
may be termed a substitute for it, but better
iu many resicts. Fossil Marl doe not
grow weeds, while manure always will.
It is quite unlike Phosphate as it has no
disagreeable smell, and does not burn the
germ of the seed. You cannot bans ly get
too much on an acre, and above all it is
first class top dre ssing for grass, for which
Phosphate can$ut be used. It can be broad.
castcd or drilled in the ground. It durabil

about one-half the cost of Phosphate and
other fertilizers. A good, reliable agent is
