On passing the dry goods store of Parker
& Parker, Monday evening, we were at
tracted by tne brilliant light in the store

idea that they bad invested in an electric
light, but on entering we discovered that
the unusually bright light was produced by
two handsome new chandeliers, which they
had just purchased and placed in position.

The recent break-up did considerable dam
a;e to different county bridges iu various
sections of the county. The only bridge
entirely swept away was the large covered
bridge at Garret, some I'M) feet long. Many
others were partly destroyed and rendered
impassable. The county commissioners are
receiving notices from all sections of bridges
needing to be repaired.

Archbishop Wood has issued rules for the

Saturday of Lent, and exempting from the

sick, those who are obliged to do hard wore.
and all who, through weak nest, cannot fast

The streams in this section were on quite
a "high" for several days last week, which
was owing to recent rains and the melting
of larite qiianties of snow on the mountain.
The water ran across the pike and carried
off one of three bridges, sontb of town, and
the fields in that vicinity were entirely sub
mergisl, the usually small and insignificant
creek assuming proportions of a large and
mighty river. Considerable damage was
done iu tbe wav of bridges and fences being
swept away.

An accident -occurred at a funeral a few
davs ago iu Paradise township. York couu
: ,v . tbavt created quite a comimKion. Miss
Boose, who died at tbe farm of Kdward
Smyser, near York, was taken for burial to
the Pigeon Hill church. She was heavy

two hundred pounds. There were six young
men as pall bearers, and when at the grave

thrown out of the hands of the others and
fell into the grave, bursting open, and ex
isting the dead body to view. The force ol
the concussion of the coffin wiUi the ground
caused tbe corpse to 0u tbe eyes, present.
iug a ghastly astiect. Tbe mother of the
young lady fainted, others shrieked, and
for a time there was great excitement and
CJiumotion. The body was finally replaced
inthecoflin and the interment made, but
the nnfortuuate occurrence threw an addi
tional horror and gloom over the sad event.
