For a few years past a number of our most worthy younir men have left this (.lace to seek their fortunes elsewhere, and all appear well aate-ficd These young men are full of enterprise, energy and pluck, and their excuse for leav ing is that there are no inducements held out for young men to advance. Being gen erally poor they are unable to undertake any new enterprise, and in their vocation they are frequently superceded in positions by ontide influences and not merit, whirh dis courages them and they leave. We notice among nnr young men that there is again feeling tnseek other places where their merit will be reropbixed. With such movements Sonierw t will lose her best mrchanics, and new enterprises will he postponed to the far future. There should be an effort made to keep these yonng men here to help build up the town. They are more liable to arrom-p!l-h this than strangers Flevate them to higher positions in workshops, acrnrdin? to their merits, in place of superceding them by strangers who have scarcely seen a workship, and are placed in positions on f-count of their financial influence. It is an estab lished fact that in those early days a party of Dtinkard settled on what is known as the Dunkard Bottom, but were murdered by tbe Indians with the exception of one man. who had returned to the eastern part of the State before the massacre. Among the names who figured in eerly history of this region we Cud that of Green and Morgan. There were three generations of Green who lived u ml' died near the Six Po;v lars. where there is an old grave yard con taining K-rhaps 150 to 200 graves. This place is situated 011 the hunks of the Cas seliuan (Little Crossing), t ear where the village of Harnedsville now stands. Fifty six years ago the last grave was dug in this grave yard by the late John Ilanna and a Mr. Ankeny for Richard Green. While about completing the grave Messrs. Hanna and Ankeny discovered what seem ed to lie the bone of a giant. The skeleton was much larger than thenea grave, which was a large one. A very large skull was imbedded in a heavy tuft of jet black hair. The mould surrounding the bones indicat ed the body to have !cen w raped in a blan ket of course striped materia!, and had been enclosed iu a rude votiiii which was almost entirely decayed; hail been put together with large wrought iron nails. Mr Haiinataid that Jacob Hartzetl, who was then the old est inhabitant of this section, and who, if now living, would be about 155 years old, said he had never known of any man be ing buried in that particular spot. Green was soon dispatched and his wife and two half grown daughters made prisoners. Just before leaving one of the Indians stepped to the side of the litthv wounded girl, and seeing the bhsxl on her head and face left her tor dead. After the Indians left she made her way to Cheat river, where David Morgan now lives. A man named Butler hearing her cries, she was taken acr.s the river, cared for. grew up, and married a man named Friend. Some of her descendants are now living in Turkevfimt and some near Friendville, Md. Mrs. Green was exchanged after captivity of a year or more and married a man named Moore. After Moore's death she married a man named Spnrgin. Mrs. Green and her three husbands are buried near the spot where Lewis was shot. After the defeat of the Indians by Antho ny Wayne ("Mad Anthony") and the treaty of 1795 was made, the two daughters of Green Were found the conditions of the treaty being that all captives should be set at liberty. The two Miss Greens were mar ried to two French tradt rs. The girls wish ing to return home, Elizabeth Green's hus band, not wishing to quit his pursuits, sold his wife to a soldier named Johnson, who returned home with and married her ac cording to the laws of the whites. Sarah Green returned home with her husband, re maining a short time with her mother. Thev sold their interest in the Oreen estate and returned to the Indians. Dttvr Sir .-In your issue of January 2. 1,-W.t, I notice the statement by you that Prohibition is not working well in Kansas, and that more ermiis to sell li.pi-.r were granted during the first year of prohibition than the year preceding iL It is boldly asserted that there is more liquor drank, made and sold in Kansas than before the a mend men t was adopted. This assertion is not only without proof, but utterly at variance with indispu able facts. F.x-Goveroor Robinson stated in a speech at Topeka, that from the best information he could get there were more government jicriuils to sell liquor issued this year than two years ago. What are the facts? Simply these: In 10 there were in the state, be sides many unlicensed places. 1,832 licensed dram sho, 311 breweries, 30 wholesale liquor establishments and two distilleries, making a total of not less than two thousand places where liquor was made and sold. To-dav there is not a distillery nor a whole sale liquor house in the State, and there are only eight or nine breweries. K. G. Dunn A Co., of Chicago, who have had their advertising agents all through the State, report that there are 336 places where liquor is sold in Kansas. These are all their detectives have been able to find, after the closest scrutiny. The Collector of Internal Revenue says there were issued Irotn May 1st to June l th 1. 8i, (the commencement of the government tax year), 1.14M retail jiermits to sell liquors; 4110 of these were taken out by druggists, authorized to sell for the excepted purrees. This would leave 74 permits for saha.n purpiwes. But a large number of these have since been surrendered, because they have been found to be practically won bless, owing to the enforcement of the law. We do not believe five hundred places can be found in the State where liquor is openly sold in. violation of the law. This would be a reduction of nearly three-fourths of tbe drink trade iu Kansas. Rev. A. M. Richardson. Lawrem e, Kansas, Xov. 11. 1AS2. The above facts are given by a resident of Kansas, and whose integritv, to the best of my knowledge, has never been disputed. The assertion that more permits to sell liquor are granted under prohibition than under the license law, proves t-o much. If the statement were true, then the highest wisdom in the liquor fraternity would be to work for prohibition. For them to oppose a measure that increases their gain, would be consummate folly. Now Mr. Editor, will you please publish the above in justice to all concerned, and oblige, yours truly, A. S. BAt-MOABD IB. Like many tithergond men our Reverend friend has permitted his tea! to outrun his discretion, and he does us a grave wrong, and one calculated to create an injurious impression, in the assertion "I notice the statement by you that prohibition is not working well in Kansas True, we made the statement, but we gave Gov Click as o ir authority for the statistics which onr friend undertakes to contradict, and in omitting that fact he makes us mpousihle fir matters of which we have no personal knowledge. On the other hand I feel sorry to say that not a single visit has been paid us by our worthy citizens.
