which he wasamen.ber, January 7, 1883:
Irvin J, Hetlley, organist of Trinity choir
of the Evangelical Lutheran church of
Somerset, died Dci-ciiiler 2(J, 1.-S.S2
In this sad dispensation of Providence
Trinity choir has suffered a loss that can
never be ieaiiel. Socially he was
much endeared to all the members of the
choir, as his tastes, habits aud manners were
such as to win the respect, the confidence
and the esteem of all his associates. But it
is not iu a social way that his death is nio-. t
keenly felt and deplored. It was his extra
ordinary musical owers and bis constant
willingness to turn them to the best account
that make it impossible to fill his place in
thechoiraud in society.
Votwithstanriing the want of a thorough
musical training and other adverse circum
stances surrounding him, bis talent for mu
sic asserted itself; not simply in the artistic
rendering of the music of others, but espe
cially so in the writings and composition
emanating from bis own pen. It is not too
much to say that many of his compositions,
both vocal and instrumental, are equal to
anything of their claa ever written by any
one. and their merit is attested by all who
have used them.
Many of his pieces have been copyright
ed, printed and published by himself, whilst
many others were issued by other music
publishers in various parts of the country.
Notwithstanding the prestige his talents and
compositions naturally gave him, be re
mained exceedingly modest, and was al
ways inclined to depreciate rather than ex
alt his own humble efforts. A profound
Christian spirit permeated bis whole life,
and characterized his every act. Ever
punctual in fulfilling his engagements and
prompt in performing his duties, he was al
ways at his place as organist on every occa
sion of religious service or meeting of the
choir, unless away from home or absent on
account of sickness. Frequently during the
past year he was at his post of duty when
scarcely able to walk, thus denying himsel
of comfort and ease in his eagerness to serve
the chnrch and the choir. But be was gone
to hi reward, and as members of Trinity
choir we bow in humble submission to the
Divine W ill, feeling that our loss is his eter
nal tain.
It is onr desire that this feeble testimonial
to his worth and imperfect expression of onr
esteem be placed Umiii the records of the
choir as a tribute to the memory of onr la
mented brother, and also that a ropy be pre
sented to his bereaved wife, to whom we
extend our deepest sympathy.
The following was adopted at a congrega
tional meeting of Trinity Evangelical Lti
thean chnrch of Somerset January 7. I-3,
and ordered to be recorded in the minutes:

Mr. Editor : I was glad to notice in last
week's Uekalo that tbe prohibition ques
tion is being agitated in your County and
State, and 1 hope the good people of Somer
set county will rise up in their might, and
never rest until they have an amendment
to the constitution forever prohibiting the
manufacture and sale of the hell-born and
soul-dcstn ing staff. The temperance
question is being agitated by tbe people of
every State in the I'nion ; it cannot be
checked. The people are realizing more
every day that intemperance is tUeir com
mon enemy. No amount of false argument
or chicanery will stay the tide. A large ma
jority of the people are opiosed to drunken
ness and the general demoralizing influence
of the liquor traffic, and would like to see it
overthrown, the only question being how to
proceed.
Moral suasion, pledges and crusades have
been tried, and have demonstrated that they
are comparatively inelfcctual, aud although
they have saved many miserable drunkards,
tocy do not strike deep enough. The dis
ease is too deeply imbedded for mild reme
dies; and the time has come to apply the
prohibition knife and cut the foul canker to
the core and U-ar it out by tlic roots. Some
will hold up their tands in holy horror at
this suggestion, and say the remedy is too
severe ; it is suicidal to attempt such harsh
remedies, etc Well, so they said twenty
five years ago in regard to slavery. Where
is slavery to-day ? deader than if it never
had existtd. So it will he in the traffic of
human lives, human hearts, and human
happiness. The whiskey traffic ul erish,
and when once dead all the dark ami dev
ilish powers of earth and hell cannot re
store it.
Remove this crushing mountain, and
when people once see the difference they
will never again allow devils or men. or men
devil to restore it. The real question now
for the people to decide, is will you, or will
the barroom element rule this nation?
Much genuine earnestness is needed; more
work and less theory. Teach temperance,
preach temperance, act temperance, and
vote temperance. Don't be afraid or asham
ed to do your part, and ere long you will
have a prohibitional amendment that will
redound to thecredit of the grand old Key
stone State. HofuHy yours,
Galoliurg. III., Jim. 10, '3. FcnLirxra.
