many of the iK-mocratic and Indeendent
Uo!es was held in Boss Coil roth's back of
fice, at which a fair, square bargain and
sale was made, upon the following terms :
Giffroth pledged himself to so manipulate
the I'cmocratic County Convention that it
would not place a legislative ticket in nom.
ination, and swore a grizzly- oath that he
would vote every Democrat in the county
fur the Independent legislative ticket, pro
viding that they iu return cast their solid
vole for him, the " Scientific " for Congress,
and for tirof for the State Senate. This the
Independent bosses agreed to, and the bar

riously injured in a collision on the
Baltimore Ohio Hailroad, near Pitts
burgh on Thursday of last week is a son of
Charles Kline, for many years the pressman
of the Herild, who was discharged last
year for voting for Hon. Win. J. Baer for
Judge and John J. Spangler for Sheriff."
The above is a silly, willful lie, manufac
tured out of the whole cloth. The editor of
the Herald voted for Sheriff Spangler. as
diil every one connected with this oflice.
Mr. Kline was never discharged by us, but
voluntarily left our employ Hirer uumih after
both Sheriff Sjianglcraiid Judge Ilaer were
elected. Mr. Kline called at the Herald
office Saturday morning to refute the Co-
rnmW lie ami said in sulvtance what we
have just stated.
Again, in reply to an article which ap
peared iu the Herald staling that Martin Y.
Sorber had been mustered in as a member of

pany still have their engineers at work, but
they now announce that the entire route
from the Susquehanna to the Youghiogheny
is located; that it will be a double track
road making a connection at Uarrishurg
with the Philadelphia & Reading road, and
by abranchrunningsouth.with the Western
Maryland. The road passes through Perry,
Bedford, Somerset and Fayette counties,
making connections at the Yotighiogheny
river with the Pittsburgh, McKeesport t
Youghiogheny Railroad. A southern
branch leaves Youghiogheny and passes di
rect to Wheeling, West Virginia. The an
nouncement is further made that this is Van
derbilt's road, and that before the winter is
over the entire road will be tinder contract

Farmers are busy cutting corn: and it is
an unusually Lard job this year. In many

and so twisted it that no two stalks can be

g.od right hand of the "Scientific" lac ked its
usual cunning when he plied both whip and
spur and rode rough shod over the late
Democratic convention. The muriiiuriugs
and mutterings that were heard in the con
vention soon iucrcac-d to a rir. Peter Hef
tier. James O'Connor, Frederick Smith, Dr.
Harrah. Yal. Hay, John II. Util, and his
friends were not slow ill expressing their
d.sgusi, with the Scientific:''' luctuuiU atiu
displeasure with some of his nominee.
I'hi claimed that (Irof hail brokeu fuith with
him. and that he must not be nominated or
he would show the ll.ss a trick or two.
Loud calls were made for a new convention,
and for awhile it looked as though the Boss
would have to succumb, but he proved
equal to the emergency; recognizing the fact
that he must make some sacrifice, he ina le
ft move that showed when he was dubbed a
"scientiric" politician he was giveyiatitle
well deserved. Grof was selected . as the
sacrificial offering: he was the political Jo
nah that would have to be thrown over
board to still the troubled waves.
OROF THROWS OVERBOdRD.
Notwithstanding the fact that both Bed
ford and Fulton had concealed the nomina
tion toSonn-rset the "Scieiftitic" had Rey
nolds trotted out. and the Conference w as
appointed to meet at Bedford last Thurs
day. rof went down smiling and confident
with three conferees, W. 11. Rupple, Cof
froth's law partner, Jonas McClintock and
Samuel Philson, all of whom bad kindly
been selected for him by the "Scientific'
When be arrived there he found the " Scien
titic " on the ground, and his smile widened
and his confidence increased. The Confer
ence met. the " Scientific " pulled the string.
and John J. Reyuolds. of Bedford, trots out
as the Democratic nominee tor State Sena
tor. The patient, waiting firof is informed
by Mr. Ruppel that he has been set aside
and that Mr. Reynolds has been nominated.
He dare not complain. This campaign is
being run on "scientific" methods and this
is " scientific " polities. Vhl betrayed in the
county, and C.rof in the district.

We find no fault with the preferences of

tion that that nominee was not indicated by

this does not go to the bottom of the mat
