An old soldier of Jenner township, w ho
has heretofore been claimed by the Inde
pendents us one of their strong men, writes
a letter from which the follow ing is an ex
tract: "I have not been reading political
papers for some time, part!vo:i account of
my eye sight, and partly on account of the

after mature reflection, came to the conclu
sion that every true Itepublican should
stand by the colors, and not desert the glo
rious old party in her hour of danger, but
try to reform within the party lines. Stand

stragglers in time to make a final charge

The following account of another sad
tragedy, in which a Somerset county boy
was ane of the chief actors, is taken from the

number of the boys at the Soldier's Orphan

shooting and was iu the act of handing the

politics, and if they find themselves in the
presence of a Republican they give loud
expressions of their faith in the great prin
ciples of the partr. out before they leave
they also express their deep regret that the
once good old party has become boss-ridden,
and that a change has become necessary in
order to save the party from overthrow, and
advise him to vote for Stewart, the Inde
Ietident candidate forfiovernor, in order to
save it. If they lind themselves in the pres
ence of a remocrat they advise him to stick
to his party, as it is sure to win this time.
These fellows are lH-mocrats and never vo
ted the Republican ticket, and are now try
ing to get Republican! to vote for Stewart
to defeat Beaver and elect Fattison. The
Independents are following closely in the
wake of the Iemoracy in their methods of
deception, and the Meyers-dale Vvnuturrinl
makes a good exhibition of itself by pub
lishing the name of Jacob Sterner, of Ad
dison township, as a delegate and commit
teeman to the Independent convention
held at S-jmersct on the FJth inst. Mr.
Sterner is a genuine Republican and expects
to remain such. He never votes for men
who are not Republicans. Mr. S. was, it is
true, defeated in obtaining the nomination
for the olliceof Commissioner, but this does
not affect bis loyalty to thj Republican
party. Why should it? When he looks into
the Independent camp he funis those who
were mostly instrumental in his defeat mus
tering there, ami are now only trying to
draw htm in that they may stab him the
deeper. Mr. S. is not a sorehead. Addison
Republicans are ail solid.
