"n l.vl the Ori ole display was purely experimental, and owing to the inexperience of those who had t lie affair in eharge the result was very far from K-ing as brilliant or successful as had htvn anticipated, though money was not wanting to secure far different ends bad it been properly applied. Since then, how ever, the Order of tbe Oriole has lieen or ganized on a basis somewhat similar to the Mardi Gras ss-ret orders of New Orleans. A larw and intelligent committee was sent to the Cresent City last March to witness the Mar.ii Gras processions, and a sub-committee penetrated the sanctum sanctorum of the most exclusive of the orders, and the veil was lifted for the first time to the gaze of non -residents. This initiation of several energetic and intelligent young Baltimore busine" men fund, lied the key for the work which for the past three months has been steadily pursued in secret. In this work, too, the Order of the Oriole has been stimu lated by an ambition to present results which will do no discredit to the New Orleans sjsonsors. who will be largely invite.) to the celebration and most royallv entertained without cost. The pageant will have as the m.'ii T trr that it is for the celebration of the anniversary of the deftnse of Raltimore, the heroism of those who held Fort Me Hcnry against tbe Rritish fleet, and the birth of the song of the ' Star-Spangled Ratiner." In all the history of Baltimore, tbe city has never witnessed such a celebra tion of thrse events as this September will present under the auspices of the Order of the Oriole. White Pine and Tomichi, both new min ing camps, are situate about tbirty-tive to forty miles northeast of Gunnison, between Monumental Teak, which rises 14,000 feet above sea level, and Granite Mountains. At present there arc about 2,001) men mining and prospecting in the two camps. The sides of both mountains, for miles, are honey-combed with prospect holes, shafts and tunnels in search of the precious metal. Galena, native, with silver, copper, iron and gold have been found. As yet but few mines have changed hands, and are being devel oped, but all such as have been developed show paying mineral, and some of them are "away up" mines already. The regions of White Pine and Tomichi are within the circle of ten miles which Prof. I lay ileu tunned "the hub" of the min eral belt, and predicted that more precious metal could be discovered within this circle than had ever been discovered in any mines on the globs. He saw fine specimens of mineral from these two camps on his way to the Natirnal Mineral Exhibition, which opens August 1st, among which was a lump of galena, containing pay silver and weigh ing 1,900 pounds; another ot almost pure iron, weighing 1,000 pounds the iron being a piece of float taken off the top of the mountains near the lead. Among the holes that have lately come into notoriety by de velopment arc the Sleeping Pet, Lew iston, North Star, Comstock, Moliie Lee, Hia watha, Defiance, Little Jintcber, Seranton Group, Strawlierry. ami many others. "Dead Man's Gulch." near v.bile Pine, takes its name from tiie discovery of tbe skeletons of three men found there, suppos ed to have been killed by Indians years ao while prosjiccting. The irons of theirwagon were also found in the same gulch. Just think of going to bed on the 2otb of July with feet so cold that you have to rub thcra together to get them warm. Fortu nately for the writer of this, his room mate proved to be a very kind old gentleman, a brother of Gen. Tbe "Hot Springs'" lietween Gunnison and While Pine are worthy of note, as well as of a visit from any one vising the Gunnison country. The government claims all springs; in thex mountains of a mineral nature, and thus prevents a monopoly of them by any one person, and all can come and bathe if they wish. There are .piite a number ol these springs w ithin tbe sjace of perhaps an acre and a half, tbe water boiling up as large bubbles, and steam rising just as though they were immense kettles aver a fire. A ham can be boiled at these springs in a very short time. What a nice place to boil "old eggs" from Kansas? Tl.cy have them at the hotels in Colorado. The Elgin House, built of pine logs, is the only hotel at the lower hot springs. Cheap sheds bave been erected out in front of the hotel for bath houses, where tbe hot water is conducted from thespringsiuto large bath tubs, and where the visitor can, for the sum of fifty cents, enjoy the Inxury of a hot bath, provides! the precaution is taken to re duce the temperature by adding cold water. We met a number of ersons at the springs who claimed to have been cured of rheuma tism by bathing in the water. Rheumatism seems to be quite prevalent in the higher al titudes, especially among the miner. : . " M ac Choice Freestone Peaches.
