in the Xortk' American lie tieu- for July, the
leading article is a profound and sympa
thetic study of "Emerson a a poet," by Ed
win P. Wipple. The author ha scarcely a
word to say about forms and modes of ex
pression, an.l cheerfully concede tliat Em
erson had command only of two or three
metres ; but he bring all the resource, of
his extraordinary critical acumen to prove
that as a seer, and one who has intuition
of the deeper truths of nature and the mor
al universe, in short a a poet in the highest
sene ol the word, Eraeraou must take rank
with the greatest geniuses of all time. In
"Hydraulic Pressure in Wall Street," a writer
who withholds his name but who mauifct

and devices by means of which fictiliou
values are created, and the unwary lured
daily to ruin. Desire Charnay contributes
the eleventh article in the series on "The
Ruins of Central America," and records the
crowning triumph of his exploring expedi
tion, nauialy. the discovery of a great ruined
city in the hitherto unexplored country of
the Iacaudonea, Guatemala. There are two
papers on the civil service question : one,
"The Things Which Remain," by Gail
Hamilton, w!h labors to relieve the civil
service from the aspersions cast uim it on
account of tioiteau's crime; the other,
"The Business of Oihoe-rieekrrs," by Rich
ard Grant White, who forcibly portrays the

HowtoCook Rice, Rice U becoming"
much more popular article of food than
heretofore. It ia frequently substituted" for
potatoes at the chief meal of the day, being
more nutritous and much more readily di
gested. At its present cost, it U relatively
cheaper than potatoes, oatmeal or grain
grits f any kind. In preparing it only just
enough cold water should be ponred on to
prevent the rice from burning at the bottom
of the put, which should ha ye a close fitting
cover, and with a moderate fire the rice is
steamed rather than boiled until it is nearly
done; then the cover is taken ofl, the sur
plus steam and moisture allowed to escape,
and the rice turns out a mass of snow-white
kernels, each separate from the other, and
as much superior to the usual soggy mass
as a fine mealy potato h superior to the
water-soaked article.
When Wm S. Morgan wrote the editor of
the Meyersdale Commercial requesting that
his announcement be withdrawn from that
paper, Editor Smith replied: "I am power
leas in the premises. Get the county chair
man to issue the orders, as, under the rulen,
he alone can. In standing up for the Regu
lars it is well to be coutistent in observing
regularity." Chairman Pile iscued the nec
essary "orders," and the following week
Mr. Morgan's card was withdrawn, butlo!
Mr. Will's card appeared in its stead.
The orders' for the insertion of Mr.
Will's card in the Coxtmrrtial were not "iv
sued" by the "county chairman.' How
does it come that Editor Smith was not
"powerless in the premises," a- under the
rules the "county chairman" is the only one
who can issue the "orders" to have a candi
date's name announced. Why aot "observe
regularity' in this instant? It would seem
that Editor JSmith only deems it necessary
to "observe regularity" wbci 'suinding up
for the Regulars."

Faost Brsxix. Among the Berlin news
items published in the Meyersdale (Xtinmer
eial of the W.U tiut I find tbe following:
"Stalwarts are a little scared. Republicans
fed elated, and the Democrat are laying
back with a grin all over their faces. Some
body is going tobe hurt.". That item, writ
ten by soma fcmocraUccoirespondent from
Berlin, was intended to delude tbe few Re
publican readers of that paper elsewhere in
tbe county into the belief that there is a
aplil among us here; but, like some other
dodges of Editor Smith and hi correspond
ents, it won't win. The Republicans of Ber
lin are too well known by tbe party through
out the countv; (hey are known to have
voted the full ticket every time almost to a
man, and have no idea of going back on
their record this fall. Mark yon; the Inde
pendents will have a small showing from
Berlin. I know of but one or two of our
number who are considered doubtful for
Beaver and the entire ticket. We want Ed
itor Smith and his correspondent to know
that the Stalwarts of Berlin are not of the
scary kind; we read the pajiers, and know
full well who is "going to be hurt." Let the
Peniocrats "grin;' they grinned before to
day, but their grinning always ends on the
other side of their face. Tliey grinned in
l&SO when the returns came in from Maine,
but that "grin" was of short duration. They
didn't "grin" so much a lew weeks later
when we heard from Ohio and Indiana; and
that is the way they won't "grin- when
they read Gen. Beaver's majority next No
vember. ' ;
How refreshing to learn from the Meyers
dale Cummercial that the "Republicans are
elated." What an acute little fling at the
Stalwarts? Republicans, indeed! Well
might we feel anxious for the party if these
sore-heads were the only ones worthy of be
ing calico. Republicans. How pathetically
they prate about Garfield Republicanism
Let them givcu an instance of Garfield's
lals.ring to disrupt the irty, before the 10
plc will have faith in their pretences. It is
scarcely less than sacrilege to dishonor the
memory of that great man by calling them
selves his followers. He sought ta harmon
ize the little differences existing at that time
by giving all factions of the party a place in
his cabinet; and did all thut mortal man
could do to prevent a rupture until stricken
down by a sore-head and disappointed nui
sance.
But these high-toned Garfield Republicans
of to-day say, ' give us the offices t-r we will
surely turn the StateovertothePemocrats."
Already the Pemocrats are grinning and
congratulating themselves on the prospect
of an easy victory this fall. From Maine
to New Orleans and California we read of
their applauding the course of the Inde
jiendents, every one of whom, in less than
half a year, will be a dead, politically, as
Benedict Arnold Is, physically, with about
as much honor attaching to them as to the
memory of that traitor. Editor Smith and
his followers are to-day Issginning M realize
the fact that duplicity don't win. They
must try again before they voice the senti
ments of Pwrlin Republicans.
