The concert given In the court house on
Tuesday evening last was most decided
success, artistically and financially, not
withstanding Miss Wallace was greatly
fatigued and really unwell. Her reputation
as a vocalist is so well established throng
out Western Pennsylvania that anything we
might add would seem superfluous. She
was very warmly received and encorded to
the echo at the conclusion of each song. So
expert an manipulator of piano leys as Mr.
Apple is seldom, if ever, seen in Somerset.
That his skill was appreciated, the contin
ued applause which followed every recital
bore ample testimony. The audience was
the largest ever in attendance at an enter
tainment in Somerset, and we understand
that the church cleared a trifleoverone hun
dred dollars.

C.rR of SupnEn Death. Very few of the
deaths which are said to arise trom diseases
of the heart do really arise front that cause.
To ascertain the real origin of sudden deaths,
an experiment hat been tried in Europe,
and reported to a scientific congress held at
St rausbo rough. Sixty-six cases of sudden
death are made the subject of a thorough
post mortem examinations ; in these cases
only two were found who had died from
disease of the heart. Nine ont of sixty-six
had died from apoplexy, while there were
forty-ox cases of congestion of the lungs
were so full of blood they could not work,
there not ing room enough for sufficient
quantity of alrto enter to support life. Tbe
causes that produce congestion of the longs
are cold feet, tight clothing, costive bowels,
sitting still until chilled after being warm
ed with labor or a rapid walk, going too
suddenly from a close, heated room into the
cold air, especially after speaking, and sud
den depressing news operating on tbe
blood. These causes of sudden death being
known, an avoidance of tbem may serve to
engthen many valuable lives, which would
(otherwise be lost under the verdict of heart
complaint. Tbe disease U suppose 1 to be
inevitable ; hence nuuty may not take the
pains they would to Mold sadden death if
I they knew it lay la their power.
On the convening of court last Monday

Is Memoriax. On last Monday the re
mains of Rachael Pugh were interred in the
family ' grave-yard. The deceased was the
mother of James L. Pugh, Esq., a member
of the bar at this place, and Rev. B. F.
Pugh, of Orangeville, III. She died after
having reached the good old age of nearly
four score yearn. During this long period
of toil and care, she was always cheerful
and happy, ever looking on the bright side
of life, and wishing everybody well. She
early connected herself with tbe Evangelical
Lutheran Church; was a constant and faith
ful member, and bore her last sickness with
christian grace and fortitude, and bad no fear
of death. She leaves three sons and three
daughters to follow her, a husband, son and
daugter having gone before. She was not
only the best of mothers, bat the friend and
neighbor of every one.

Special Mention. During a recent visit
to Johnstown, we dropped in to see Curt. G
Campbell, the popular Main street druggist,
and found him a courteous and obliging
gentleman. Mr. Campbell's store is at 204
Main street, and his line of Drugs, Mcdl
cines. Dye Stuffs, Terfumes, and Toilet Ar
ticles is large and complete. He keeps no
old, stale stock, but everything fresh and re
liable. We would advise our readers to call
on him when in Johnstown; and our farmer
friends and physicians will find it to their
advantage to consult him on any thing in
his line before purchasing elsewhere.
Read this and tell your neighbors that

We clip the following items from the Bed
ford Gazette:
William Cook's hydrant pipe having be
come stopped up the other day, he had the
hydrant taken up and examined, when an
eel was found securely lodged in the pii.
If the borough can make such arrangements
that 'the citizens will be able to draw eels
from their hydrants each morning in time
for breakfast there will not Iw much com
plaint about the water taxes.
Mr. Fitter, a wealthy gentleman of Phila
delphia, who has been the guest of Dr.
Wickersham for several weeks, had on in
terview with Mr. John Anderson on Wed
nesday in relation to the purchase ot the
Bedford Springs. Mr. Filler was acting in
the interest of Philadelphia capitalists who
tad authorized him to negotiate for the
property. After a full discussion ol tue
matter, the parties agreed upon $250,000 as
the price, and Mr. Filler at once wrote, to
his friends, enclosing a draft of the prop
erty. . He says that, lie believes the offer will
be accepted. .
Reliuious. I have just finished my sec
ond quarter of ministerial work in the
Hooversville charge. During this quarter
I held two protracted meetings, with the fol
lowing blessed results: In February I held
meeting in the Shade congregation, near
the mountain's top. Sixty anxious souls
came to the altar for prayers, the most of
them young persons, children of Lutheran
families. Twenty-nine new members were
added to the church. A large number of
tue converts were "already in the church.
The congregation now numbers 120. A
good collection was taken as a thank offer
ing, for synod. Seventeen weekly church
papers were taken. In March I held my
last meeting, in Hooversville. Here God
also remembered his jieople. I-orty-nme
anxious souls came to Jesus asking to be
saved. Thirteen were already in the church.
Thirty new members were added to the
church; some joined other churches. This
congregation now numbers 10a. A good
collection was taken as a thank offering, for
synod. Ten weekly . church pojiers were
taken. This congregation is building a new
church, 40x00, basement and steeple. The
corner-stone will be laid shortly. Perqni-
tes and donations during the quarter,
$10.02. Total for the hrst half year Pro
tracted meetings, 4; come out on the Lord s
aide at extra meetings, ISO; added to the
church, 107; reclaimed, over 60; whole num
ber of members, 42d; ierquisites and dona
tions, $121.03; weekly church papers taken
and paid for, M; half year a salary paid.
My dear ones join me in hearty thanks to
the kind people for these evidences of their
attachment to us. God bless them.
