There seems to be a perfect epidemic of
thieving in the country, judging from our
exchanges. Nearly every paper you pick
up contains an account of stores or dwell
ings being robbed, or safes plundered. These
burglaries are not confined to the cities,
but the majority of them take place iu the
small towns or country. A few good doses
of cold lead would do more to check this
epidemic than a hundred sentences to the
penitentiary.

sorts of stories were immediately set afloat;
one that there would beaOfoot cut throu; b
the Pile property, while a gentleman was
heard to declare that one of the engineers
had told him that there "would be a fill of
a tew feet on the Academy hill." The last
story is one on a par with the declaration
made by some person connected . with the
curps, that there would be a piece of trcssel
v. irk 1400 feet high in theDeetcrgap. These
stories are swallowed by a few of theacredu-
lous and repeated with an earnestness that
makes them laughably absurd. The truth
is that about all the railroad news that is to
be gathered here is, that there is a corps of
engineers here, that there are a half dozen
corps in thecounty, that they have an office
in the Cook & Beerits Block, that they are
running a great many experimental lines,
and that they keep their mouths clos ly
sealed as to what they are actually doin.
In fact, Chief Engineer Miller seems to be

The Jl-rv System. The modus operandi
of securing jurors is not understood by ev
ery one. The presiding judge every year
orders so many names placed in the wheel
as in his judgment will suffice for the courts
to be held during the ensuing year. The
system of drawing these names is as fol
lows: When jurors are required the clerk
or the court sends to the sheriff an order
directing him to draw a certain number of
jurors the order is called a venire. As soon
as received by the sheriff it Is registered in
a book kept for that purpose and is sent to
the clerk of the jury board, who prepares
his book to receive the requisite number of
names when drawn. At a time when it is
convenient for the jury commission, consist
ing of the sheriff and jury commissioners,
the wheel is opened and names required by
the venire are drawn out separately and
duly recorded. The first twent-four names
drawn each term are designated as
"grand . jurors." After the drawing
is concluded. Die clerk sends to the sher
iff a d'lly certified list of the names drawn ;
with the residence ami occupation ef each
jnnir. The list is the sheriff's guide from
which he makes out notices for jurors. It
becomes the duty of the officer charged
with the service ol the notice to find the
juror, no matter where he is whether at
the address given or at any other. After
proper effort has been made to find the juror
the officer returns to ths sheriff all the no
tices he has been unable to serve and a state
ment of those served, and the sheriff then
preiarcs bis answer to the venire and affix
ing it thereto returns it to the court clerk,
who uses the list for his roll. It will be
seen from this statement that the 1'w-t is a
complete one and absolutely free from any
chance of fraud.

sionary money collected, $75.87. One new
church is now in course of construction and
laid for so far as built, with a creditable
uni still on subscription. There is no
miserable church debt appendages to Bens
creek circuit. I ruber has been provided
for a horse-shed at all the churches iu tlie
charge, uud one of these sheds has ul
ready been built.
As a steward of the' manifold grace of God
I have sought to give Christ the preeminence
in all things, and endeavored to promote
peace, justice and equity between brethren.
As a citizen 1 have paid my tax and voted
my sentiments, giving my reasons for the
same when ask to do so. Who will take
this right from me ? :
The worthy citizens of this borough are
entitled to my sincere thanks for the many
kindnesses shown toward myself and- wife,
and for the recent honor conferred upon me
in my election to a seat in the. Board of Di
rectors of Common Schools.
The many fraternal associations formed
with the people, and the generous support
given us by the loyal members and friends
ef 'this charge, have made our removal
somewhat painful to us. lie shall ever
think of these dear people with the most
pleasant and grateful recollection. In my
heart there is a warm spot for them, which
neither the vicissitudes of time nor the
storms of life can chill.
I go to my new field determined ever to
be a loyal son of the church. Committing
the important interests of this charge to God
and to the faithful and studious care of my
successor, I say, Fare ye well.
Respectfully,
- A. S. Bi mgard.ner.

GRANGER. On February 21, 1882, Geo.
Russel Granger, aged 9 months and ) days;
and on March 19, 1S82. Marion Viola Gran
ger, aged 3 years, 3 months and 12 days.
These two were the only children of
Frank and Ida Granger, and were taken
away by that much dreaded disease, scarlet
fever. Bright and intelligent beyond their
age, they were the light of the household,
the joy of their parents and the hope of the
future. Some time before the little gir! took
sick when asked in the midst of her play
where she was going, answered, in words
that now seem prophetic, "Georgie and I are
going to the bountiful Giver of life." Oh,
how it crushes the sunlight of gladness out
of life when the dear little ones are called
away ; yet no skill can prevent it, for pale
death with equal step knocks at the houses
of the Hxir and the palucvs of kings. How
precious to us becomes the living hope that,
like an anchor to the soul, clings to Him
ho is the resurrection and the life.
