Physicians Rcncrallv admit the import

Small pox usually commences with a de

headache and intense, pain In the back.
Frequently there are, i:i addition, nausea,
vomiting, stupidity and sum. 'times delirium,

temperature ;roes down nearly to normal.
The eruptions first appear on tiie face,
around the mouth and chin, but the same
time on the wrists. It consists of spots,
which are smaller, rounder and harder than
those of measles.
In r-.easles, the catarrhal, symptoms are
prominent ; red and watery eyes, sneezing,

'Tis said of him, he was not known to have

around him, in hit affliction, scores were
ready to offer sympathy aiid help; and at

The widow and an only daughter aro left
amid the shadows of a darkened home.
With them he had purposed moving April
1st into a newly purchased home in Centre

resting place is in the beautiful "Gottes

place.
Of six children, four survive, all of wh m
were present at the funeral. Of fourteen
srand-children, ten survive, and these also
were all gathered around his grave, save
one. An only 'sister, Mrs. Pile, was aio
present. Truly in his death he was not for

Mn. Eiutoc It U now three mouths
since I entered upon my labors in the Hoo
versvilie charge. During the first quarter I
held two protracted meetings, with the fol
lowing results: ine lirsi meeting was nei-i
at (iraeffs ehunh; thirty-six came t.- the
altar for prayers; of this number eight were
already members of the church. Twenty
eight new members were received into the
church on Christmas dav, a number of
whom were, heads of families. A pood col
lection was taken for synod as a thatik-oiier-ing.
The present membership is ninety-five;
peace and harmony once more prevail. The
second meeting was held at Lambert's
church. At this meeting forty-one came to
the altar for prayer,, fifteen of whom were
already members of the chureh.atid some six,
members of other churches. Here I receiv
ed ten new nicailM-rs into the church, which
iirAcs the present membership ninety-six.
A good collection was also taken up forsvn-
od as a thank-oth ring. Thirteen new sub
scribers far chur.-h papers were secured.
Here peace and harmony also prevail. The
nnmlipr of new lucmbersadded to thechnrge
the first quarter is forty -four. Many who
haul become careless and negligent w ere re
claimed. To God be all the praise. Whilst
ministering to the siiritual wants of the
people, -they were not unmindful of our
temporal wants. The perquisites. gifts, ic,
of various kinds for t'ac first quarter from
the members and community around
amounts to the snug little sum of Ssl.Ol.
for all of which we join in most hearty
thanks. We are among a kind hearted pco-
Ed. Hekaui. Having a little leisure, oc
casionally, I thought I would occupy a por
tion of it in writing y'm a' short communi
cation. I have been a regular subscriber
and reader of your excellent paper over 2'J
years. Well do I remember the time when
I was to receive my first copy. I waited
with great anxiety at the oflice for its arriv
al; knowing it would contain news of a
battle fought during the late rebellion,
(Fair Oaks, fought last day of May and first
of June) in which many Somerset county
lxiys were engaged, one who was near and
dearto me niv brother. I am as anxious as
ever to visit the office and ask if the Somer
set Herald has arrived.
Perusing over the interesting columns of
your paper of 18th inst., I was very sorry to
notice that H. C. Musselman, late principal
of I'rsina schools, had departed this life.
He wasa young man of whom I had the
highest resjiect, en excellent teacher and
a gentleman in every sense of the word. I
shall never forget the day we spent togeher
in I'rsina. When the hour of parting came
he gave mc his hand and said : "I hope to
meet von at the Somerset County Institute,
where we shall have a pleasant time again."
Hut, providentially, I did not meet Harvey.
Glad to know that he was honered by being
elected its Secretary.
Small pox scares come around occasional
ly in tair section. It appears to be spread
ing e cry where in all parts of the country
exeept Carret county, where it has not,
that I known of, assume! an epidemical
character. The cry is "get vaccinated!"
The doctors are busy vaccinating, saying it
is the duty of everybody to get vaccinated.
Wcsternport and Piedmont report small
Iox occasionally but none real.
I a:ii engaged in teaching school in Gar-j
ret count v. near J laukuu ana lltoeuix
Mines. The school is composed principally
of Scotch and Iri-it element. Number en
rolled, 1C. The i.tlendanee, during present
term, is not as tood as laat, on account of
bad roads and whooping cough. A few I
think arc remaining away for the reason of
not being vaccinated. A teacher is liable to
a fine often dollars for allowing children to
come without producing a certificate of vac
cination from a regular practicing physi
cian. This causes me to hxik after the
matter pretty closelv. Yours,

Young man, go to Hetiley's and buy
yourself the latest style of stiff or soft hat,
just received from New York and Philadel
phia. The Xew Scientific Americas OFricr.s.
We are glad to announce that the &itn!ij:c
A.ucrkan came out of the lata fire in New
York like the fabled Phicnix, with renew
ed life. The subscription lists, account
books, patent records, patent drawings, and
correspondence were preserved in massive
lire-proof safes. The (printing of the Scien
tific American and Supplement was done in
another building; consequently the types,
plates, presses, paper, etc., were unharmed,
and no interruption of but-.: ncs w as occas
ioned. The new Scientific American ot'i .tea are lo
cated at J01 Broadway, comer of Warren
street, a very centra! and excellent situation.
The new building fronts towards the City
Hall, the Court House, and the new l'ostof
ficc a magnificent 'structure, which co-t
eight millions to build. Xcar'y opposite,
and a few hundred feet distant from the
Scientific American offices, is the entrance to
the great Suspension Hiide over the Hast
lliver, between Xew York and Brooklyn,
which required ten years to construct and
twenty millions of dollars to pay for. lit
front, also, of the Scientific American is the
City Hall Park and Printing Honic Square,
with its statue of Benjamin Franklin, and
the homes of eminent editors and newspa
pers, such as the Xew York Tribune, Xew
York Tluus, Xew York ,S'i;i, Xew York
Wurltl, Xew York HauUl, 21iil und IZ.pr;-jt
Z rtutirr, and others.
The new Scientific A mcrloni ofiicrs are ad
mirably chosen for active business. Here.
in addition to the issuing of their interest
ing publications, Messrt. Muni! & Co., aided
by trained examiners and draftsmen, pre
pare specifi-ations anil drawings for Amer
ca: and foreign patents. If any of our
readers should happen to make a new dis
covery (we hope every one of theni mav- do
so, and gain a fortune), they have only to
drop a linetoMiiun 5 Co., 211 Broadway, ;
Xew York, w ho will reply at once, without
charge, stating whether the invention is
probably novel and patentable. A hand
book of instructions, with full particulars,
will also be sent, free. Messrs. Munn it Co.
have had over ."" years' experience in the
busine-s.

En. Hekaui : The rather bitter contro
versy now being carried on through the
county papers about the Republican meet
ing held in Somerset is not much calculated
to strengthen the party in the county. That
the meeting was conducted in a disorderly
manner no one seems to dispute, and that
the would-be Meyersdalc ring was largely in
the fault is apparent. It was doubtless an ef
fort on the part of the minority to capture
the meeting and run it in the interest of the
Independents, against the oft expressed
wish of the voters of the county.
The statement made some time ago
through the columns of your paper the
hallucinations of Middleereektr notwith
standingthat the go-between policy ot the
Meyersdale Cumnurcitil would drive the pub
lic patronage from the south of the county
was so fully verified last summer and fall
that no one can doubt it any longer. The
result of the fall election was a severe re
buke to the Independent element, not only
of this county, but of the whole state, and
the followers of that delectable sheet, the
Meyersdale Oimmrriul. should have taken
warning and dropped back into their old
pjec3 in the party. This rule or ruin poli
cy, because all can not have ofliees who
wan them, never pays anyone. It is the
inordinate desire to hold oflice that some
times drives men mad, and in their desper
ation they do much more harm than good
The predominant party often draws into it.i
ranks those from other parties, who are al
ways hungering and thirsting after office,
and unfortunately the Republican party of
this county has done too much for men of
that class, and their clumsy fingers, as well
as their motives always help to disorganize
the party that honors them.
A few months ago the Independents had
a strong representation among the county
office-holders.

are displaced as
will piertuit. Soon there will none be left
to tell the story. If it is theobjectof the In
dependents to break up "rings,'' they have
signally failed in this county, if their theory
is correct that Stalwartism means ringism.
The truth of the matter if, they want to hold
ofiiccs the people are not willing to confer
upon them, and they have goue a little
mad for the present'. Nad Canicronism, as
they style it, given them plenty of oflice?,
all would be harmonious with them now,
but unfortunately there are not enough
offices for the accommodation of all who
wish to serve their country in that way.
The Independents have held about as many
offices in this county as the Stalwart, audi
they should not complain since they are
largely in the minority, but patiently await i
their turn. uuskkyfe.
