One day last week Mr. Samuel Fox dis
posed of his farm, about three miles cast

The Sunday schools are being well attend
ed. The fact that Christmas is drawing

children, alike.
Chnstmas is the season when the lean
and lank woman stands on an equality with
her well developed sister. It isn't always
the woman with the biggest stockings gets
the best presents.

Messrs. T.J. Ticking and Wm. Gilbert,
two of our mighty hunters, succeeded in
killing a very plump young doe, last Thurs
day. They started out again this morning
avowing their intention of bringing in a

The season for the average small boy to
brrak through the ice has arrived, but it is
of no special interest except to increase the
anxiety ot parents ; revive the undertaker's
business and add variety to the news items
of the local paper.
The skating on Kantner's dam was most
excellent Friday and Saturday, and was im
mensely enjoyed by the lads and lassies of
the town. The entire dam was frozen over,
makiuga large, solid sheet, the surface of
which was as smooth as glass.
Hon. Wm. J. Baer has received his com
mission from Governor Hoyt as President
Judge of the l'ith Judicial District of Penn-syl-ania.
Judge Baer will take the oath of
office on the first of January and will pre
side at the next term of Court.
Ticket Agent Patton will have another
excursion troni Meversdale and intermedi
ate points Friday. Half-fare tickets will be
sold pood for three days. Quite a large num
ber of our citizens will take advantage of
the excursion rates to visit Johnstown.
We are iufonued that Mr. Jont. Barclay,
has disposed of his farm adjoining the bor
ough, to Mr. Westley Miller, of Jefferson
township. Mr. Miller takes the stock, farm
ing implimcnts, household furniture and
everything on the farm for which he pays

Last Thursday most of the newly elected
county officers filed their bonds in the Pro
thonotary's office, after first having them
duly approved by the Associate Judges. The
Judgts will meet again on Thursday, when
the balance of the officers will present their
bonds for approval.
Jeremiah McKibben, formerly manager of
theGirard House, Philadelphia, died at St.
Joseph, Mo., Tuesday last. His father, Mr.
Chambers McKibben, who now lives in
Giaiubersbarg, was at one time ostmaster
of Iittburgh and proprietor of the St.
diaries Hotel of that city.
The members of the Disciples' Sunday
school will hold a Christmas jubilee in their
church Christmas eve. The entertainment
will certainly be a very enjoyable one, for
the children at least. In Lieu of a Christ
mas tree they will have a Christmas box.

The traveling public was considerably
surprised and displeased on Monday to
learn that on and after January 1, 1SS2, the
minimum rate for first-class tickets on the
Pennsylvania railroad would be four cents
instead of three, a circular to that effect
having been sent to each ticket agent and
conductor.
Messrs. Harry B. Colborn and Frank O.
Baush, two of the wide-awake young busi
ness men of Frostbnrg, Md., dropped in on
us daring the early part of the week. They
are both genial, big-hearted fellow? and are
always welcome callers. Coby, however,
was so changed in appearance that at first
we couldn't tell whether it was 8. or B.
Cncle Jim Parson lost a valuable draft
horse one day last week. He has the con
tract for delivering the wire for the Tele
graph Company along the old Pittsburgh
Philadelphia pike, and while engaged in
hauling near Greensbarg the horse took
Bcvcre cold from the effects of which he
died. He was a noble animal and one
whose place will lie hard to fill.
A meeting of the members of the bar was
held in the Arbitration Room, Monday
evening, which was attended by almost the
entire bar. A resolution, highly compli
mentary of the retiring Judges and request
ing that a banquet be given them on New
Year's eve, was voted down. The crowded
state of our columns will not permit us to
give the proceedings in full this week.
The trial of the seven men charged with
the murder of Maurice Healy began at
I'aiontown on Monday morning of last
week. The prisoners elected to have sepa
rate trials and the case of Patrick Dolan was
first called. The entire week was consumed
in hearing the evidence in this case. The
evidence against Dolan is very strong, but
entirely of a circumstantial character, and it
is altogether likely that he will be acquitted
1 he minor in circulation that there is
small pox in Somerset is a mistake. The
only case known to us in the county, is that
in the Mason family, and as stated else
where the afllicted family live iu an isolated
place several miles from the town. Every
precaution has been taken to prevent the
spread of the disease ami we think there is
absolutely no danger of its being contracted
from this source.
A number of the patrons of the Bowman
cheese factory have given us the weight of
porkers recently killed by them that had
been fattened solely on whey received from
the factory. George L. Gohn leads off with
one that tipped the beam nt 557 pounds;
George C. Lichty, 523; Aaron Heiple, 406 ;
Peter Miller, 452; Adam Miller, 425; They
would like to hear from the patrons of some
of the other factories.
Considerable of the coin which is now
in circulation is not what it appears to be.
Sharpers are Suying up silver dollars, halves
and quarters that have holes in them, pro
curing the dollars lor seventy c.nts. and
the others about half their original value.
They fill up the holes so ingeniously with
preiired wire that no one but an expert
can discover it, and then pass them off at
full value.
The price of potatoes is rapidly declining
in the city markets, and it is to be hoped
that an elimination of the ficticious specula
tive value of all provisions will speedily
follow. The legitimate advance in tbe nec
essaries of living, caused by crop failures
and the laws of supply and demand, is a
sufficiently heavy burden upon the wages of
the working classes, without the addition of
forced values caused by speculation.
We learn from a private source that Mr.
A. E. Sage, of the Somerset Dairy Company,
has been very unforuatc with the three
horses that he started to take from here
to his home in New York. One of them
died on the way and his two blooded
horses were taken with pink eye when
about one hundred miles from home and
are not expected to live. There death would
be a great loss as they are not only a hand
some but a very valuable span.
The Supreme Court has recently decided
that "a promissory note which bears the
genuine signature of the obligor, but which
was, in fact, obtained from him by fraud
and under the impression that he was sign
ing an entirely different instrument, is aval
id obligation against him, and in the hands
of a bona fide purchaser or assignee, for
value, before maturity." Moral : Be care
ful what you sign.
One of the most enterprising stock raisers
of Somerset county is Mr. Henry S.Bcrkey,
of Qucniahoning township, who purchased
at the sale of Kentucky thoroughbred stock
on Thursday last, a roan bull, calved March
15, 1S78, weighing 1850 pounds, for $250.
This seems quite a large sum to pay for one
animal, but Mr. Bcrkey knows a good thing
when he sees it, and is intent Uon improv
ing the stock of his county. The general
opinjon is that the bull was cheap at the
price.
The Bellcfontc Watchman says that a sad
accident, resulting in the death of a little
son of Mr. John Grubb, at Valentine's works,
occurred on Saturday last. Two boys, a lit
tle son of Mr. John Flack, aged about seven
years and the deceased aged about five years,
were playing pitching Lay in one of the
stables belonging to the company, when ac
cidcntly one of the fork prongs penetrated
the eye of the younger boy to such an ex
tent as to injure the brain and cause death
in about four hours.
Christmas and New Years coming on
Sunday this year, the day before, Saturday,
will be generally observed as the- holiday.
In the case of banks and other public insti
tutions it is legally enacted that when a
holiday comes on Sunday the day previous
shall be observed, and custom is making
this observance general. Saturday is usual
ly a half holiday, anyhow, with a great
many classes, and it will be much more
satisfactory to take that day and be ready
for business again on Monday morning than
to break in on the beginning of the week
with a holiday.
An important act relative to taxes was
passed by tbe last legislature. It makes all
taxes assessed npon real estate a first lien
upon which they are levied, to be entered
up on the first of January each year, and to
be good for two years and up to the succeed
ing July ; provides for a lien docket to be
kept in the commissioner's office, which is
to be a notice to everybody. In case judi
cial sale takes place, the lien docket is (to be
satisfied before any money goes to the cred
itors. It is not retroactive, and excepts first
mortgages. Collectors must swear that the
taxes could not be collected from personal
property on the premises.
Within a brief space of time, recently,
eight children of a family named Boyle,
residing near Cresson, were carried off with
diphtheria. The father of these children is
employed as repairman of the P. R. IL, and
being very poor, his neighbors concluded to
take steps towards relieving his wants. A
subscription paper was started, and already
some $SO0 have been raised for the lonely
couple whose household treasures all lie
buried in tbe graveyard not far from the
home. An acre of ground has also been
purchased and deeded to them, and ft bouse
is now in process of erection on tbe ground,
it being built at the expense of several gen
tlemen who have interested themselves in
the welfare of the couple.

Just before the lime for dismissing sc hool
arrived, last Wednesday afternoon, a panic
oerured among the teachers "and scholars of
tbe academy, occasion by the building set
tling to such an extent that a considerable
.portion of the plastering from the ceiling
fell down. This was caused by some mali
cious boys entering the cellar and partly re
moving one of tbe braces that supported the
building. -Thursday morning the board of
directors accompanied by Mr. Frank Fried-
line, an efficient and experienced workman
visited the building and contracted with
Mr. Fricdline for the repairing o( the same,
School opened again as usual Monday morn
ing. Mr. Friedline pronounces the building
perfectly safe and says that parents need
not hare tbe slightest fear in sending their
children there.

The entire family, consisting of a wife and
four children, of the colored man, Charles
Mason, who died of small pox last week, are
now down with the same dread disease.
They are living in a frame building used by
contractor Spillcr as a commissary depart
ment While grading the Somerset A Cambria
Railroad. The building is located alon the
line of the road, In the woods on the farm
of Mr. Henry Keister, about two and one-
half miles from the town, and is some dis
tance away from any other habitation. It
is such rare thing to have a case of small
pox in this section and the people are so
afraid of it that it is next to impossible to
secure nurses for those afllicted with the dis
ease. The directors of the poor have, we
understand, taken this case in charge, and
are seeing that the poor sufferers are proper
ly attended to.

The sale of blooded cattle, by Sheriff-elect
Spanglcr, last Tuesday afternoon was large
ly attended by our most enterprising furm
crs from all sections of the county. Thirty-
three head in all were disposed of, the aver-
aire price paid per head being $54,50. The
first animal offered foi sale was ashort-hom
Durham bull, which was knocked down to
Mr. Henry S. Bcrkey, of Quemahonir.g
township, for $250. Wm. Statler, of Shade
township, purchased a five months old calf
for $01.00. 11. G. Hemmingcr paid $5! for
yearling heifer, and X. B. Critchfield pur-
chased three head for which he paid $175.
They were, taking all in all, a very fine
lot of young cattle as the prices paid would
indicate. There seems to be a growing dis
position on the part of our farmers to im
prove their stock, and that they are willing
to pay fair prices for a good grade of cattle
has been amply shown by the success which
has attended the sales of blooded stock re
cently held at this place.

evening there will be an elocutionary and
musical entertainment; select reading by
Prof. R. Bruce nays. Thursday evening a
lecture will be delivered by one of the most
popular lecturers of the day, Theodore Til
ton, subject "The World's To-ruorrow."'Mu-sical
notation will be taught daily and
teachers drilled in songs suitable to the
school room or parlor. Nine subjects on
the methods of instruction, and twenty-one
topics for discussion are submitted to be il
lustrated and discussed by the teachers.
Nothing need be said of the programme,
which has been prepared with great caro by
our County;Supcrinieudeut, J. C. Weller.
By an act of Legislature of 13S1, school
directors are required to allow teachers their
time and wages whilst attending and panic
ipating in the exercises of the annual insti
tute. The attendance therefore will proba
bly be larger than on any former occasion of
the kind. To meet expenses incurred in se
curing lectures an admission fee of 25 cents
will be charged Tuesday aud Wednesday
evening. Thefreneral admision for Thurs
day evening will be 40 cents ; reserved seats
GO cents. An opportunity will be offered in
due time to persons living in different parts
of the county who desire to attend to secure
tickets in advance for the Thursday evening
lecture.

The Western Union and tbe Mutual
Union Telegraph Companies have a line of
four wires each along the old National road,
and are now making preparations for four
more wires on each. The Mutual Union
threatens to connect this place and Peters
burg by a direct line.
A. G. Black, one of our flourishing mer
chants, has secured the agency for the Howe
sewing machine in this county. John S.
Ellis, the well known salesniau, appears to
