has been made as to who does the mutilat

a Government detective that nine-tentha of
the work is done by Cuban in Xcw York.
A number of coins are fastened together
and a hole cut through the lot, taking away
about one twenty-fifth of their weight The
same Cubans also carry on the business of
sweating gold coins by shaking Uiem in

eagles will in three hours yield 20 in dust

Why Xor? A fast mail train, leaving
Philadelphia early in the morning, is sup
ply inrg people along the line of the Pennsyl

in advance of the former time. A number
of the papers along the line of the B. & O.

ed ou the road, which would enable people
in western Maryland and south-western
Pennsylvania to get their Baltimore and
Washington mail at a reasonable hour. It
is a rood suggestion and one we should like

Charles Mason, a colored man, living in
"Spiller's commissary," about two mile
:iorth of Somerset, on the S. 4 C, . E,
died of small-pox on last Thursday. Mr.
Mason was an energetic, shrewd, bard-working
man who had accumulated considerable
property. For a number of years be has
been a sub-contractor on railroad work and
has uuttl!y been successful. He visited
Pittsburgh last week and shortly after his
arrival home was attacked by small-pox.
He will be remembered by many of the
readers of the Hkralt as the man whm lost
considerable valuable sttx k by the burning
of a stable on the farm of Jude Mussulman
a year or more ago.
Why it Wwldx't Work. The firm of
Hay Bros,, recently placed a heater in the
basement of the residence of Jacob Zimmer
man, Esq., on Bedford street, and on Tues
day last the concern got out ol order. The
damper would not work properly, and al
though a good fire could be kept up la the
furnace there was no perceptible heat radia
ted from the roisters. An employee of the
firm was dispatched yesterday to find out
the cause of the trouble, and detaching a
pie at the danir he found a good-sized
pheasant wedged in such a way as to pre
vent the turning of the plate. The bird bad
evidently made its way from the hill and
alighted on the chimney-top, from whence f
it tumbled in and got caught ami roasted.

A snort tits mo Mr. George Tayman. of
the "Somerset Hons," sent to a gentleman
in Baltimore to send hint couple of newly
arrived emigrants, a man and a woman, to
work about the hotel. Last week tbey ar
rived, fresh from the Fatherland, unable to
speak or understand a word of English.
Tbey were put to work and proved to be
competent, energetic and willing until the
latter part of last week, when it was noticed
that the man appeared moody and dissatis
fied, evedeotly laboring under strong men
tal depression brought about by homesick
ness. Friday night he arose from hi bed
in a third-story room and walking to the
window jumped to the ground below; al
though considerably braised no bone were
broken, and he started to run down aat
street. He was overtaken just as he reached
the old station and was placed in the hands
of a German Catnily, named Zimmerman,
living opposite. He has been gradually re
gaining his mental balance and it is thought
will be all right in a few day. It was a
perilous leap.fnll fifty feet, and the wonder
is that ha was not killed outright
Bchidcli Chances. In a lengthy article
in regard to the death rattle insurance
sharks, the Connelbrville Ontritr has this to
say in regard to parties in this county, who
gamble on the chances of the boot moving
over the dark river of death ahead of sched
ule time : "We understand that one Calvin
Holmes, of Scottdale, has been acting as
agent for one of the Ilarrisburg companies,
and has succeeded in getting $5,000 worth of
policies on the life of John Burkct, an 85
year old citizen of Somerset county. The
amount is in policies ot $1,000 each, and
they are held by five young men living near
Broad Ford. Puring the past week their
assessment amounted to four dollars each.
An old lady named Connelly, living in
Somerset, is said to be policied in the enor
mous amount of $50,000. She is at least 05
years of age and is quite feeble, 'Squire
Anlt, of Scottdale, is credited with having
procured this insurance. An amusing story
is told of the speculations of a Somerset at
torney on the life of an aged lady who died
a few weeks ago. The attorney noticed her
feeble health and thought -she would be a
splendid subject. Accordingly be succeed
ed in having $30,000 placed on her life; but,
alas for the deep laid schemes of the wily
man of the law, the old lady died too soon I
It was one of the conditions of his policies
that in case the subject died within thirty
days, the policy holder would get nothing.
The lawyer paid $300 for bis chances in the
death-lottery, and he cot just what he de
served nothing. Why didn't you give us
the name of the lawyer, Snyder ?

to act on a bull, last week. Mr. Cessna was
no sooner known to be in town than, meta
phorically speaking, they commenced to
paw the ground and bellow. Knots of them
congregated on the street mers and in
some of the offices, and Mr. Gwsna's move

Pincbcr Creek, about thirty miles above
Fort McLeod, belonging to the Mounted
Police force, has suffered a severe lows pf
late from a totally nnlooked-for source. The
crop or oats had been harvested ana the
grain was in the shock when the late storm
came on and prevented its heinz housed.
During the storm wild geese in unheard -of
numbers visited the farm and devoured the
greater part of the grain, eating even ; the
straw. The men in charge of the farm,
twelve in number, were ordered outtobtand

farm while the geese were there, and in one
