has been generally regarded during
the day that the Presidents rally
had been of such a character that
a further relapse, while anions; the
possibilities, is not considered prob
able. Commencing at four o'clock
yesterday afternoon, there have been,
up to .S o clock to-night, 2N hours in
which the President was pronounc
ed as improving. The improve
ment has not diminished i n strength ,
nor is it less marked to-night than
at the most favorable portion of the
rally. The patient has been very
quiet and restful all day. His mind
has been clear and his expressions
more cheerful than at any time dur
ing the past ten days. The pulse
has not shown any fluctuating ten
dency. It has remained pretty
steady and retained its improved
tone and character. There has not
been any marked fever. The nour
ishment taken during the day has
exceeded in quantity that given
during the previous three days.
The glandular swelling has been do
ing well during to-dav, and'ha.s not
caused any particular inconvenience
suppurated satisfactorily through
the car and the first incision, and
also through a new incision made
this morning. The heavy sleepi
ness which marked the President's
condition yesterday and caused so
much anxiety and alarm, has en
tirely disappeared, and his rct la
tiny has been perfectly natural and
his mind is clear when he awakes.
The members of the Cabinet are all
hopeful now of the most favorable
results.

The doctors and nurses and Mrs.

sick room. The feeling of hope that
has prevailed to-day has continued
to grow stronger as the night ad
vances and the improvement in the
President's condition seems to in
crease. Dr. Bliss says that the
stomach is in good condition, and
an increased quantity of nourish
ment has been given without pro
ducing the slightest signs of nausea.
The parotid gland has discharged
more freely to-night than hereto
fore and the pus appears to be of a
healthy character. At this hour
the President is sleeping quietly.
It is believed he will lc better to
morrow, in which case Dr. Bliss
says he will surely get well.

Pierson, the family physician, treat
ed her for weak nerves, but she con

It wat thought by her friends
that she fretted over the irregular
habits of her husband, who, it is
said, has been intemperate since he
was married. She told a lady friend,
however, that she was quite happy,
and that she would be perfectly
happy if her husband did not spend
so much time in New York. Early
last Saturday morning she drove to
Orange, purchased a novel, ordered
groceries, and then visited some
friends. She laughed and chatted
about her trip when she returned
home. After dinner she wrote out
a list of novels she desired the news
dealer to get for her. After finishing
the list she told her husband she
would like to go out for a ride. He,
fearing that it would rain, ordered
the covered buggy. At live o'clock
she was dressed ready to go out.
Mr. Dudley went to her bedroom on
the second floor and she at once be
gan scolding because hc did not or

into a passion, stamped her foot in
anger, and said she would not ride
in the buggy.
After some words he quitted the
room. As he reached the foot of the
stairs he heard a shot, followed by a
fall on the floor above. He ran up
to the bedroom, where he saw his
wife lying on her back, her head
and shoulders in a closet and the
lower part of her body in the bed
room. There was. smoke in the
closet. A bullet hole was in her
right temple, just above the eye, and
blood was flowing from the wound
and from her mouth. She had her
hat on and it was stained with her
blood.
A live-barreled Smith it Wesson
revolver, 32-calibre, was lying in a
corner of the closet, with one barrel
empty. She had tiken the weapon

the most pr.ri pcace.ibly disposed,

whatever side of the line they may
Iind them. The scene of operations
is the country between the east and
wesk forks of the Milk River to the

It is hardly exjiected that the mau

Captain O'Brien's battallion, as he
is thought to have a sufficient force
to give them a lively chase and pos
