received a Mipjdy of tickets for the several

Let every Republican voter, when he

new rules provide that "The names of nil

do not contain the names of oil will be cir

year and it is well enough for the voters to
be placed on their guard. The regahir tick

the committeemen of the different town

laist Thursday some forty-five members e.f
the Fost of the (.'rand Army of (lie Republic
from Johnstown, came to Somerset for the
purjiose of assisting in organizing a Fost at
this place. The 1'ost was natued in honor
of the gallant Colonel Robert I'. Cummins
who fell with face to the foe at Cict!burg.
His dea l body was pieked up only a few
feet distant from the sil where lieneral
Reynolds lost his life. In naniing the I.-t
in honor of him, his surviving comrades
have paid a handsome und fitting tribute to
his memory. The number of the IV t is
21", an 1 from tlu judgment displayed in
selecting officers, and from the kind ot ma
terial it i compos! of. we feel assured that
it will be a long lived and cuetvxs'ul or
gauiation. Wcare almost persuail. d to accept the
dos'trine hi-ld by some, that children are
born liars, and have to be educated in the
paths if truth. Men are but children of a
larger growth, and we have positive evi
dence that the education of .some of liicm
has been sadly neglected in this particular,
as witness the ttory now being diligently
initiated by gome of cur County uflH lals
to their shame be it sjokcn a.s well as by
others, that a caucus w:is held In this place
last week, in which the editor of this paper
and others participated, vhcrcat, a selection
from the candidates was made, and a ticket
"fixed up" or agreed upon.
We have simply to say that no caucus wts
held of which we have knowledge, no ticket i
or set of candidates agreed upon, that the
story is a lie made of whole cloth, known
to be si) by the parties circulating it, and
thai the voter or candidate who permits
himself lo be influenced by it, is ai green as
a gosl i ng.

and bu -;v, und on Saturday in-irnim: tin:
the cars for Orville, Waj'ne comity, Ohio,
where I arrived on Saturday evet'ing and
remained over Sunday. On, Monday I went
to Mansfield, and on Tuesday morning
reached Ashland, 10 miles north-west of
Mansfield, on the New York, Penn'a. it
Ohio railroad.
Nothing that would interest your readers
occurred on the way out ; but as a, matter
in which all arciiiteres-tcd it may be well to
mention the fact that finer prospects for an
abundnnt wheat harvest were never known
than are now to be seen hi "the portion of
the state of Ohio through which we passed.
Re'ginuing with Columbiana county and
continuing to the end of the journey, hun
dreds of acres of wheat wore to bo seen on
either siele of the road, which fr promise, of
yield could not be surpassed.
When we arrived at Ashland we found
te'aius in rea.linesj to take us to the grounds
where the meeting .was in stsssiou, which
were reached by a drive of about one mile.
Here we found two tents erected. Tho one
iu which the meeting was held was circular
in form and capable of seating from three
to five thousand persons. This lent was of
heavy sail-cloth, and was erected on a spot
of ground rising in every direction from the
centre. In the centre was a platform elevat
ed about two feet from the ground, occupi.
ed by the delegates and standing committee.
The seats were so arranged that the faces of
all within the tent were turned toward tlii.s
point. At one end uS the. platfoim was
the editors table, when; the prcfs-reporters
and editors of the various church papers
published by this dtiu.'ini'.iatio:-. were
ceated.
The other tent was square in form. The
walls went made of boards and tho cover
ing was heavy canvass. This tent was used
for the boarding hall, and had the capacity
of seating 1,1S2 persons at ihe tables ut one
time. Its length was 225 feet, and its width
was 75 feet. At the end of this lent was the
kitchen, constructed of boards, and con
taining a furnace, on winch were three large
pans, similar U the sugar pans u;ed in Som
erset county. One of these was used for
making coffee und the others for other co. k
ing purposes. The extent of the culinary
department can only be imagined when it is
known that two large beef ca.ilo were
slaughtered daily, and eiht barrels of flow
er v. ere consumed.
The number of persons in allimlanoe was
variously estimated at from 7,000 to KV.j.
Any one not accustomed to attend these
meetings would be struck with thr venera
ble nppearence of the persons, ihe uisn csjk.
cially, that were present. I have neveT teen
in anv assembly so lane a rrooortion of
gray beards as was to bu seen in looking over
this assembly.
The executive committee v.as cotnpo.-e l
of a body of men that would compare fa
vorably withany ctvlesia-tical body wc have
ever scon in sc.-ioti. They were all men
past middle age, of dignified appearance,
and oecided ability in discussion.
A noticeable feature of the meeting was
the liberal responses made to calis for con
tributions fr church work. A collection
was taken during the meeting to erect a
mission. cliael in Denmark and aid the mis
sion work at that place which amounted to
$2.i-'0.5o.
Thtr Ashland College, otic of the educa
tional institutions rt"vritly start . si by this
denomination, was- a point rf inlet cf-t to
most persons who ware in attendance at the
meeting; The bmhilngs arc beautifully lo
cated, and while ti.ey possi-ss the cliaracter
istic plainness of this people the style of
architecture is .".:ic. The main buil-iing is
100 feet front a .d also b.U feet deep with a
beautiful cup' da rising from the front cen
tre. Detached from this building, ar.d at a
distance of perhaps 3-X) feet, Is a. wing with
a front of JO feet, and a depth of llo feet.
Buth of thisc building are thrcj stories and
built of brick, with stone siils for doors ar.d
windows. The plan for the buildings when
completed Comprehends another wing cor
responding to the one already built on the
opposite side of the main building and the
same distance from it. The entire cost .f
the building now completed is a li f tie more
than $10,(1' W.
Tho almost constant rain during the
meeting was a great interruption to the en -joymcnt
of those present ; yet. taking it all
in all, it was a time of pleasant association
and one that will long !a rcmeltfbcred by
the many who were p.-c3cn!.

Ten good, substantial houses were creeled
during the year. Greater eaie was exercised
in their location than formerly; but while
the grounds are generally large enough, in
a number of instances they are not improved
as they should lie. The new houses have a
good black-board surface and suitable furni
ture, and in some imlances old houses have
been remodeled and fitted up with desks of
the most approved style. The plan already
adopted in some townships of furnishing
one house every year until all are supplied,
should be speedily followed by all the dis
tricts still in need of hotter furniture. There
are still some houses in which may be found
the 'ong de-sk against the wall and bneUns

are rapidly disappearing.
TEACH RIB.
I am glad to state that the great ' majority
of our teachers a:e morally, int ellectually
and socially Well qualified, that they have
labored faithfully to promote the- best in
terist of the cause which they have c.sjious
ed. They do not generally receive a e-om-petisatiou
commensurate W'th their fidelity,
but we feel certain from present indications
that a better day is rapidly dawai'ig for
the,- e worthy pedag ues. As I have before
intimated, there are, and always will be
some who shirk the labor of the school
room, rdmply pulling iu time for money.
Should stt. h be remunerated as they ought,
they would receive less compensation than
the te.mi-U r or the servant girl.

Fift.e'ti public examinations were held
.'luring the year. Two hundred and sixty
two provisional and live professional cer

applicants this year were older and better
(ua!i!icd Hum those of the two preceding

in many respects a great success, more so

T. R. Noss and P. 0. Murphy, of "Califor

were held at different points in the county,
w hich gave general satisfaction, and I am
coi.vlncoil that such institutes can be made
a most cfl'eftivc aid in awakening a good

cosctrsiox.
Sixteen years of my life have been 'devot-
e'd to the cause of common "schools, six of
which I have oflleiajed as Superintendent.
Ia laying aside my responsibilities, I wish
to say that I have endeavored to do my
duty without fear or favor. I am fully con
si .ions that many of my dutii'S have been
imperfectly performed, that I have made
many mistakes,' but ask that these failure's
be attributed to the head rather than the
heart. The sehools of our boyhood are not
the schools for the present. This progress
ive ago demands a higher, nobler, broader
education than the-y aiibred. American
education ought to lc the best in the world.
It ought to train our boys and girls tube
the wise.-, noblest ami most virtuos men
and y. ometi on e-ar!h : such an education
can only be guaranteed, to the youth of our
bei..vcl land, through the agency of live
schools, taught by live teachers. In all our
schools the tenden-y of the teacher's in
structions and example should be to give
putiilsjust views of the real dignity ef
labor, of the inth:i(e superiority of virtue,
and the unspeakable worth of life, and the
spiriivhich should control its conduct.
Let the schools ar.d the Bible go hand in
hand, and when they shall have lighted up
the minds and warm ed the hearts of our
pcopli', injustice shall feireve r cease, and our
nation will i.ail the glorious dawn of a
brithter and better day.
For si.ycars I have been the recipient of
many acts ef kindness from directors,
teachers and citizens throughout Ihe county,
year ader year as I traveled and labored
among them, I universally received ihe-ir
aid and support in advancing the educa
tional ir.terevLs of the county ; for all of this
I tender them my sincere and heartfelt
thanks ; and with the request that the same
kindness be shown my successor, I leave
the oliice without any regret except that
which is naturally felt on parting with
many long-tried and tni? friends.
