Many of those who pretcud to know, pre
dict an abuudant fruit crop this year. The
protra.-ted old weather of the pat winter
they y has prevented the premature bud
ding of fruit trees, which is claimed to be a
good indication, and will result in a large
increase in fatit. fmall fruits will alr0 do
well, for the reason that the heavy snows
have protected the roots from freezinj out,
which occurs in winters when there is hut
little suow. We ho;c the prediction mar
prove correct.

that would implicate me as a Greenbackcr
and you are aware he failed to do so. He
could not do so, because he had none to

none to print ; the last time the letter, to
which we referred in our communication,

We need no additional evidence to "t'i;'-

It is amusing to see a man who has been
seeking effice these many years so anxious
to cover op and hide from the public the on

that act.
f tut of the goodness of Lis lieart Mr. Ogle
has passed by in silence many grave charg
es made by Mr. Scull; by which he endeavor
ed to quarter him, yea, to cut him up into
mince-meat, politically speaking. This ig
noring of grave charges on the part of Mr.
Ogle, is an eviJence of downright kindness,
and shows the true missionary spirit so es
sential to a successful reformer.
"P.ut in the article ofthe nth of April he
attacks, with me, Oen. W. II. Koontz, as
having acted false to the party, and, as then,
having me in training ulrcady at that early
day for thaCcllectorship," Here Mr. Ogle
again shows the true missionary spirit. He
says, "as far as the charges made relate to
me I care nothing." Did you ever sec a
more self-sacrificing spirit in a voung and
rim7 olitieian ? He says in effect: You
can bring grave charges of treason acaint
me, you can call me ugly names, even a
Grecnhacker, and I will taite it all as a true
reformer ; but when you attack my friend
and boss, Gen. KoouU, who is naturally
modest and uuassuming, and averse to criti
cism, I am ready to shed gore and wade in
it likewise, if it becomes necessary.
We do not rejoice in any man's failures;
we simply call attention to facts for the pur
pose of refuting unfounded assertions made
by Mr. Olc. You will excuse ns, Mr. Edi
tor, for quoting the following paragraph in
Mr. Ogle's letter, as we consider it a perfect
jem in its own way : "When a candidate

years of age, with a limitad acquaintance
and no olitical experience. I had no

circumstances I should have won the prize.

l'.KOTIIKRSVAMXY. April 9. IKSI.
lin. Hca -.l D : I see Smith of the Cmnmrr
ciitl is very much opposed to a "boss" or
leader in the Republican party, while at the
same time be and a few others are trying
their best to ls-come party "liosses" in Som
erset county. But the Republicans of the
connty will not turn fools just yet and leave
their tried and successful leaders, and the
grand principles and usages of the party to
run after these strange and fulse gods, and
endorse the bolting and kickingof men who
would, if they were allowed to run the "ma
chine," soon have the party shattered to
pieces and the fragments scattered to the
four quarters of the earth.
The Republicans of this county will stand
by a leader or "boss,"' whom they know
can and will lead them to victory. The Re
publicans of Pennsylvania have such a lead
er 'n Senator Cameron. Xo difference what
the "kickers" say, everybody knows and
they kuow that Don Cameron is a great or
ganizer, a very influential man, and as a
sncceessful party leader his equal is not to be
found in the State if in the nation. To D
Cameron and a few more like him we must
ascribe largely the success of the last two
Presidential campaigns. Everybody knows
the marvellons power of Genrjnl Grant in
the last campaign. ' It is not only the "kick
ers'' and "bolters" that want such men as
Cameron, Grant, Conkllng, and Logan to
step down and out, but every Democrat in
the land is earnestly desiring tiie same
thing, knowing very well that their party
would then have an easy walk-over.
It is worse than folly to suppose that a
party can be carried tr. rough successfully
without a good leader. Wc are ail familiar
with the past history of Cameron, and since
the reins ofthe party in Pennsylvania have
been in his hands lie has kept her moving in
the right direction and lead her on to victo
ry every time. The "kickers" and "bolUrs"
can't change the past history of Cameron,
and if they keep on kicking from now to
dooms day Don's history will fcemain just
as bright and glorious as ever, and his great
achievements will remain unshaken.
So, also, must a county have a leades, one
who is well versed ia polities and who has
common sense enough to teach voters that
majority mast rule either at a primary or
In a caucus.
So, again, must a towi sVp or borough
hare a leader or leaders, and to think write
or talk differently is all bosh. But then.
the leaders must be men who have inflii
ence, and who con lead : men who bclive
and teach that when a nomination is made,
if only by a plurality vote, it must be sup
ported by every man iu the Trty. Such
are the men it lakes for leaders, and not
men like the Cmunertiul man, who lives in
a borough in which about two-thirds of the
voters arc Republicans, aud who has taught
Uicm so much bolting that the Republicans
can't elect their local o filer rs on account of
the bolting and kicking-.

En. Herald : Last Wednesday, Cih inst.,
Mr. Jehu McMillen. proprietor of the White's
Creek Tanneries, Listonburg, this county,
was cutting the ice from the water-wheel by
which the bark mill is run. After he had
removed a portion ofthe ice the wheel start
ed, throwing Mr. M. off his feet and into the
wheel. The water which had been turned
on so that the wheel would start as soon as
cut loose kept it in motion, and was soon
making rapid revolutions. Mr. M. succeed
ed in potting hold of one ofthe middle brac
es ofthe wheel to which he clung with a
death grip at the same time calling loudly
for help, hut unfortunately no one heard
him. He had been in this condition, he
thinks, about an hour when his son started
for the tannery ; nearing the mill-bouse he
heard his father, who by this time had be
come quite hoarse from his continued and
energetic efforts to make some oue hear.
The son first attempted to stop the wheel by
utting off the water, and putting bark in
to the mill ; failing in this he ran toward
town calling for help, which soon brought a
number of men who succeded in stopping
the mill and rescuing the unfortunate man.
It is supposed that he w?s in this situation
for nearly an hour and a half ; all this time
the cold water was pouring down over him,
and when rescued he was nearly frozen.
His head and other parts of his body were
badly bruised, and the flesh was torn from
his hands, arms, and legs. Mr. McMillen
has the sympathies of his many friends in this
comniuuitv.
We arc very mm h p'cacd to see that the
citizens residing near the railroad station are
making the much needed repairs to the
crossings iu that neighborhood. If the bor
ough Hirers will not attend to these things
the citizens must.

flattering. Some very appropriate remarks
were delivered for the good of the Order by
the newly elected officers, and it was plain

the Order, vif : frienship, love and trnth
animated the breast of everyone present.
