Mrs. Crossly, a lady residing in the family
of Mr. John A. Kneadlcr, in Cherrytrcc, In
diana County, about seven miles west of
Carrolltown, attempted on Sunday morning
last to blow out the light ofa hanging lamp
in the room which she occupied, when an
explosion followed, and the burning oil en
veloped her person, igniting her clothing
and injuring her very seriously, if not fatal
ly. Mrs. Kneedler, who was ill at the time,
sprang from her bed, and hastening to the
assistance of the unfortunate woman, en
deavoring to extinguish the flames by
wrapping a piece of carpet about her, but
was prevented from doing so by t Uc hasty
flight of the writhing victim, who ran ont of
the house screaming pitifully, when one of
the children succeeded iu puttil.g out the
fire by throwing snow on the poor woman,
whose clothing was, however, almost burn

Mr. C. C. Orton gave au oyster supper to
a number of his friends lat Tuesday even
ing, in honor of Mr. E. P. H. Harison,
who left the following day for .'nif;on, AV.
Va., where he will occupy an important po

The supper was quite an affair and many
was the appropriate toast drank and re

very pleasant manner in social Conversa

pressed t'lemselves as deeply indebted to
Mr. Orton fr the evening's entertainment.
A number of those present in a few well
chosc:i words expressed their sincere regret
at the departure of E. P. H. from our midst,
and wished that the coining years might be
as has been the past. Mr. Harrison has been
a resident of Somerset for the last year and
a half, being the resident engineer on the
S. A C. R. R., and by his polite and gentle
manly deportmentaud pleasant, genial man

Parties from the mountain report that
last week's thaw induced the bears to come
out ,f their winter quarters. It has been
the custom, ever since the days of the first
or Adam bear, for bruia to come out of his
warm parlor in soft weather and visit his
neighbors to sec how they are getting along.
Sometimes it happens that he is put to seri
ous inconvenience by a sudden change of
front in the weather department ; but in
that case, when the frozen crust is too weak
to carry hisbcarship on foot, bruin converts
himself into a bob-sled and glides along
with flying colors down the mountain slope
to bis winter palace among the rocks.

We experienced a general break up in the
weather last week. For several days it-was
very mild, with a steady rain, and the ice
and snow rapidly disappeared, causing the
small stream below town to assume large
dimensions. Thegutters were all ice-bound,
and considerable trouble was experienced
in opeuing them, the water flowing over the
pavements and finding its way into the cel
lars and low places. Saturday morning
there was a sudden change in the atmos
libera, about noon a driving snow storm set
in and by night the wind was cold and raw
with the mercury in the thermometer below
rero. At the preasent writing it is clear,
calm and cold, the ground being covered
with about an inch of soft, white snow.
Mr. Isaac Kaufman, whose home is near
Davidsville, Somerset county, kept a record
of the -old weather during February of
1S.V, and also of !S.ri7, which were excep
tionally noticable for the frigidity that pre
vailed during his recollection of extreme se
verity, and in referring to memoranda still
in his possession he finds that the mercury
in the former year touched on one occasion
20 below zero, while the coldest atmosphere
in lo7 was 12 below. On Wednesday and
Thursday of last week his thermometer reg
istered at the coldest icriod 16 below. Ue
tween the years first mentioned and the
present winter he says the mercury did not
drop so low during any season.
The Altoona Tribune says: One of the
most important cases ever tried in this coun
ty was the tilatt case, disposed of at llolli
daysburg last week. The defendants were
indicted for selling hard cider. They were
convicted and sentenced to jiay the fine im
posed on violators of our license laws. It is
thus established that hard cider is an intox
icant, and that those who sell it do so at
their peril. It has been quite generally be
lieved np to this timethat cider was not con
sidered an intoxicating drink in the eye of
the law. and the traffic therein has been a
source of considerable revenue in some or
tionsof the county. The action of the
court will doubtless have a restraining in
fluence. From the amount of snow that has fallen
this winter one would iinairin that the ce
lestial water works were almost, exhausted.
Rut such does not seem to be the case. The
rainfall of the past few days has been gen
eral throughout the country and in many
places has done great damage. The exces
sive cold snap which set in Monday of last
week aud continued until Tuesday f this
week rivals anything of the kind everexpe-ricm-ed
in the memory of the "oldest in
habitant." Every morning during that pe
riinl the thermometer was eavorting down
below zero, ranging from M to 111 degrees
below that frigid point.
The ground bote is a bigger man nor old
Vennor.
A number of Mr. Auditor Snyder's most
intimate friends called upon him Saturday
evening to congratulate hitn upon his re
markable success in his first volitical vent
ure. The Auditor rc.-eived them in a friend
ly but modest manner ; shook hands with
them as of old, and expressed his gratifica
tion for the magnificent majority which he
had received. He said that, while he was
not a seeker after oflicc, still if his friends
thought it for the public good that he should
forsake the walksof private life and enter
upon pulie career, lie was willing to sacri
fice his own personal inclinations in the
mutter, and that so long as they .continued
to honor and trust him, he would endeavor
to so conduct himself as to I worthy of that
confidence and honor. He further said that
the responsibilities of the position which
be bad just been chosen to fill, by the al
most unanimous vote of his fellow-townsmen,
wTe vry great, but that he would try
to discharge the duties in a manner that
would 1 sotisfuetory to all, irresjiective of
race, color, or previous condition of servi
tude. We think he will give an oyster sup
per to-morrow nipht ; at Ut we hoj so.
Vennor ron Febbiwiiv. The mild spell
with which January closes will probably
continue well into this month, with the ex
ception of a day or two, up to the 12(h of
the month, with balmy, Fpring-like weath
er prevailing in many parts, and snow rap
idly disappearing. A couple of days of
blustering weather, with rain or snow, will
lie followed by snow storms andedd weath
er throughout Ontario and the Western
United States. This term will be followed
about the Kith by storms of wind, ruin nn-.l
snow, vrevicus to the the setting in of a
cold term. With the beginning of the la-.t
week of the month brilliant, mild, spring
like weather will again appear, meiling the
snow, and rendering sleighing impossible in
some localities. A few days before the close
of the month high winds are likely to pre
vail, with gales around .ew York, Long Is
land Sound and other joints, with bluster
ing weather in Canada and the Northern
United States. The last two days are, bow
ever, likely to le fair, and the month will
end with a little snow on the ground.

HE RIFF'S SALT
Morl asp Mori: Aitive. A llio time for
the inauguration of Ireilent Garfield
drawn near, the work of the pcr.erul com
mittee at Valiington Ik-coiik-s more and
more active, and the jilans for the arches
have been agreed upon, and several of ihem
will unquestionably be the most pretention."
and elaborate ever erected in the country.
Acceptances continue to reach the commit
tee from various military organizations, and
there is no doubt as to the perfect success of
the grand military parade. The Baltimore
and Ohio Company is also very busy per
fecting all the requisite plans and schedules
for the running of many trains prior to and
following the inauguration ceremonies. The
equipment of the road has recently been
largely augmented, the company now hav
ing an unusually lare number of sleepers,
parlor cars and day coaches. The well
known and most jiopular "Iiaisy Train,"
whU-b leaves this city in the evening and
arrives at Washington the next day at noon,
seven hours ahead of the fastest trains on
other lines, will doubtless be run in a half
dozen or more sections, and every care will
be taken to insure prompt arriving time at
the National Capital. The Baltimore and
Ohio tickets for the round trip will be plac
ed at exceedingly low rates and be graxl for
the trip to Washington on any train on the
1st 2d and 3d of the month, and good i$ re
turn on any train np to the evening of the
seventh.
A terrific explosion occurred at the Altoo
na Iron Works on Monday morning. I'rom
the TrUiune we get the following facts : In
the rolling mill is a very powerful machine
known as the "Squeezers." These arc used
to rqneex out slag which may be in wrought
iron. It appears that in some way they were
brokcu and large crane standing near was
used in their repair. The toe of the crunc
was surrounded by ice so that it could not
revolve, and some of the employes who bad
not been about the mill rcry long, and were
nnawareof the danger, procured mass of
red-hot cinder and laid it on the ice with
the idea of melting it. When the hot cin
der came ia contact wil.h the i an explo
sion followed and ioccs of cinder were hurl
ed in every direction. The mill was set on
Cre in several placej and it is a niirat-le that
none of the men in the building were kill
ed outright, for the air was thick with (ly
ing pieces of cinder, some of which rose fif
ty feet. Four men were hurt, three of them
quite badly, John Curry was severely in
jured in the breast and stomach by Hying
cinders. James Smiley, a son of the boss
roller, was burned in the face and eyes.
Svl vester Mattern was badly hurt and Frank
King received slight injuries. Dr. Horn, of
Altoona, was called on and did a!! he could
to relieve the sufferers who were burned.
There will be no suspension of the works.
