Riot at Salisbury. Mischief has been
brewing for some months back among the
miners of the Elklick coal region, and last
week it culminated in the burning of a tip

gondola loaded with coal, and on Wednes
day evening last in a riot of no mean pro
portions. The facta of the riot as near as we can get
at them are about as follows : Tlu; men em

on a strike for the past two months on ac
count of a dispute with their employers
in the last few 'lays some of the men had re

that was being paid at Smith 4 Co'i mines.

ticle defines the position which the I'epuli
Iican Party is, in logic and in policy, bound
to assume toward the Southern Slate, t en
ce-tsion, compromise, conciliation, the au
thor savs in substance, will no longer be tol
erated. No person is to bcadmitled toasoat
in the Senate, unless the record of his elec
tion is clear. New laws are to be passed
for the surK-rvision and protection of the
ballots in the elections of members of the
House of Representatives and Presidential
electors. The civil magistrates must have
the means within call (the army) of protect
ing the ballot and keeping the peace. The
United S'atcs must insure to the icople of
each state a truly republican form of gov

Mr. Euitob:- The result of the lute elec

Democracy and more than a usual victory
for the Republicans. ,
For more than twen'y years the Demo
cratic irty has been drifting into dangerous
firms of sectionalism that has not only dis
turbed the cace, happiiKrss and pro-erity
of the country, but threatened the life of
the Nation. .

Slavery was, however, consumed in the

human beings w Ti' enabled to lay down the
s'lackles of bondage, riven by the war, and
receive the great boon of liberty.

The Democratic jmrty is not only e-tk)i

Eorron 1 Irs lb : In looking over the
Meyers-dale 'ununmtii J of Nov. 1!) I observe
that the editor of that per quotes the fol
lowing froia the Philadelphia Tina: "Som
erset and Bedford present the name of John
Cessna an their choice for the United States
8enaor," and then acknowledges his ignor
ance about Bedford, but says "Somerset is
not presenting the honorable gentleman for
the Senatorship or Judgeship or any other
office and it never will." Well 1 Well ! one
is obliged to exclaim, since when is thu edi
tor of tiie Cbmmercial the Republican jarty
of Somerset county, or the dictator of its
legislators as to whom they shall vote ?
In my humble opinion the Pennsylvania !
Legislature can perform no act during the
coming session that will give such over
whelming sarisfartion to the Republican
party, not only of Somerset county, or the
State of Pennsylvania, but lo the Nation, as
thut of electing the "honorable gentleman"
to the Fnitcd States Senate. A better man
for the petition cannot be found in the .State,
and every reading and thinking Republican
knows that the compliment would Mill I
inade'iiiiite for the services which the ' hon
orable, Ktntli uiiUi'' gave the Republican par
ty, not only oi rennsylvania, but of other
States during the late camjuuf;n. I think
Lnthor you should not be so hasity in ei
preMsing your private opinion about a man
of as high standing as John Cessna, and set
that opinion iu your editorial columns and
give it as th opinion of the Republican
party of Somerset county. No, No ! you
nhonldu't do that ; it isn't nice. Always re
member that other jveople have an opinion
as 'well as you. and when the lime conies
that John Cessna will be our candidate for
governor, you will have only otie vote, and
that you will cast for the "honorable gentle
man'' from Redfonl
It is to be hoped that you will cease throw
