The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania has
recently rendered several decisions of gen
eral Interest in the matter ot road taxes.
The right of farmers to wrk out tbeir
road tax lias been generally, if not univer
sally, conceded, suicrvisora in a tow town
ships insisting that tbe tax must be paid in
money. A test case has been decided jn
favor ot the tax-pavers, and their right to
work out tbe tax distinctly and finally
aflirmed. In other cases collectors of road
taxes have claimed a commission on the
part worked out, as well as that paid iato
the county treasury. The Supreme
Court decides that all claims tor such
commissions should be rejected, the work
ing out of the tax imposing no labor on
the collector or treasurer, but on the su
pervisor, who is fully paid for all bis ser
vices. The sending to us of long obituary no
tices, with the expectation that they will
be given gratuitous insertion in these col
umns, seems likely to grow into an estab
lished practice uuless checked. When a
person of prominence dies, the fact, to
gether w ith a sketch of th deceased's lite,
makes a valuable item ot news which no
nemspuper worthy of tbe name would ig
nore. But all persons who die are neither
prominent nor well known, and long
drawn out post mortem eulogies of such
must 1 paid for. We are ot course sorry
tbalauvoody should have to pay the last
debt of nature, but we are willing lo sym
pathize deeply and lervently at the rate of
ten Cents a line. These reflections are in
tended lo be wholly ceneral in their char
acter, and we trust tlial no one will take
offense at Uiem; but we beg to say thai the
principle they enunciate w ill be strictly ad
hered to.
An exchange produces an alistract of an
act in reterence lo the dog law :
"If anybody is attacked on the highway
by a dog the parly has a right to kill the
dog, and the owner can be held accounta
ble for any injury inflicted by the animal.
Even on the premises of the owner ot a
dog, should a party be attacked and injur
ed, after endeavoring to protect himself,
the owner can be made lesponsible for
damages inflicted; provided it can be shown
that al the time he was in pursuit of busi
ness or ou a fricadly visit If a dog by
barking at passing horses and vehicle oc
casions any damage, its owner is liable for
the Ukm sustained."
Thus the law very properly afljrds am
ple protection for loss or injury by dn,;s.
rnUinliumation is published because there
are many vicious dogs kept throughout tbe
county. It is Iherelore well for those who
are owners of vicious dogs to know the
law on this sill ject.

Editor Hx&Ato, Sir; "Anti-Third.
Term," in tbe last week's issue of the
Meyersilale Commeirial, attempts to reply
to "X" in A manner that indicates pain.
He says. "It is extremely silly in all re
spects, yet we cannot let the opportunity
pass," etc. He accuses X of having a
desperation for oflice, no doubt a crime in
the eyes of "Ami," for being so bold, but
tbe voters of Addison do not think that
offices were created lor "Ami's" special
benefit, to the exclusion ot all others; yet
they cannot call to mind the name of any
one of their number .who was defeated for
the Legislature. The Addison Republic
ans only claim their proper share of office,
A modesty not very manliest in the charac
ter of old "AntL" We sympathize with
our old friend, because the pain bo exper
iences is no doubt . very Annoying. The
thorn is deep in the flesh And its extrac
tion will be painful; but, if ho will grin
and bear it manfully, an acorn might drop
into his mouth, as a reward for his pains.
He is not inconsolable cither, for ha ta'ies
comfort in the thought that when X gets
older be will grow wiser. Ibis may be
true unless he lets the follies of his youth
haunt him in his old age, as appears lo be
the condition of "Ami " When we refer
to age we only mean 'he tenure of oQlce. -He
also attempts to speak lor General
Koontz and immediately tries to pin his
laith to the General's coat tail, lie can
well afford to do so, tor be needs a little
help to "catch that plum." Gen. Koontz
is too well and favorably known in Addi
son to need the support of "Ami" to keep
him be tore tbe people. V e don t object
to the General's course at Uarrisburg, but
we cannot follow him into the bolter meet-
fng, called by tbe Blaine Club of Meyers-
dale. .
"Anti" asks to be delivered ot such Re
publicans as Governor Cornell and Senator
Conkling ot Xew York. He wishes them
kicked out ot the party; because they
are tor Grant and can carry that State
tor him this fall. Il is a well known tact
that Senators Conkling. And Blaine are
personal enemies, perhaps "Anti." never
heard of this in his advanced age of a little
over A sec re and a halt years. That
Grant is a stronger man in Xew York
than Blaine, is daily becoming more ev
ident ; except lo those who are intention
ally blind.
The friendly admonition, "Don't wor
ry about your Somerset friends, who have
gone into the bolt They are able to take
care ol themselves, in this crisis
Il there is any crisis, pray tell us who
caused il and what created the boll in
this county. "Anti" thinks he knows a
great secret, but like the school boy don't
like to tell, lie says, "It is A matter well
known to a certain gentleman how his
(Campbell's ideteat was brought about two
years ago." It "Anti" would only let
us into this great secret, how much it
would help us, but be don't like to. It
would be interesting reading away down
here in Addison. 1'ray do tell us all about
the matter. There is but little doubt that
he knows all about it We think he has
quite a knowledge, and we profess to be
able to trace the same finger marks in tbe
bolter move that brought disaster to our
Senatorial and Congressional ticket two
years ago. It was that "mess ot pottage"
that did it all. We recognize ibe "voice ot
Jacob."
He also advises General Campbell to
keep his optics skinned in the future.
This is go.xl advice and he will be able to
place his. "ammunition at the right place"
next time. He has learned that there was
a Judas ia camp that bad many brothers.
There was also a Brutus, who subbed him
in the hack, not because he loved him
(Campbell) less, but bee, use he loves office
more. Campbell's optics are clear enough
to penetrate the thin mist of "Ami's" own
raising. Addison Republicans are always
true at the polls, and they gave Campliell
a lull vote. It was "Anti" and bis triends
thai flinched, because the plum did not
happen to drop Into tbe pet lamb's mouth.
"Anti" should remember that we know
him well and like him a little loo; but not
on account of his su(erior wisdom or good
looks, but oa account ot bis winning

COKFLCKKCK, May 15. U.
Startling Phenomenon At about 3
p. m.. on Wednesday, the 5th of May, a
grand and startling scene was witnessed
tin the farm of Anthony Wechtenheiser. in
Shade township, this county. - Mr. V.
and his son were at work in the field About
tbe hour named, when they were suddenly
startled by "a rushing, mighty wind,
the effects of which could nowhere be
seen. Tbs roaring noise is described as
having been dreadful, and the feelinir pro
duced by it was that bewildering dread
which comes over one who expects mo
mentarily to be struck by a danger which
he cannot see. The witnesses to this
scene were conscious that tne sound was
approaching nearer, and as they gazed
About them they suddenly beheld the
skurrying motion of a tremendous whirl
wind some sixty rods distant The sensa
tions at the moment of discovering the cv
clone, were exactly comparable to those
one would expect to feel if an object of
great weight should suddonly drop upon
the earth near him, from a cloudless sky.
So this remarkable "whirl" evidently
came.- For only a few moments it contin
ued to play upon the surface, moving but
a snort distance ; but long and violently
enough to disturb the position of almost
everything within its reach, and carry im
mense quantities or leaves, small stones.
and other rubbish; np into the air. As
suddenly as il had struck tbe earth, ii
bounded up again. And now tbe most
startling part of tbe scene occurred. Al
an elevation of several hundred feet the
debris carried heavenward, was observtd
to take fire. At the same instant there
were beard loud and distinct clans of
thunder in tbe midst of the wild, whirling
scene. So terrible was tbe racket and
confusiot., that the checks of the beholders
blanched, and a team of horses barnessed
to a plow, became frantic and alraii t en
tirely unmanagablc.
Certainly this was soraetbinz exception
al in the shape of a whirlwind. And, to
.how that the testimony ol tbe witnesses
was no mere exaggeration, burning leaves
were oliserved to descend at the distance
of something like a mile from the scene of
tbe remarkable phenomenon ; and persons
living near supposed m one case, that tbe
boiler at a steam saw-mill had exploded.
and in another, that the farm buildings of
Mr. W. had been broken down by the
t rra.
Will some one well versd In th j science
f melerology or pneumatics, give its a
short chapter on this unusual scene. It
will be remembeied the 5lh of May was
cloudless in this region.
