Tunnel on Fire. On Sunday metrn
ing the watchman at Pinkerlon tunnel, a
short distance east of I rsina, discovered
that the tunnel bad been set on fire some
time liefore and was burning rapidly to
ware! tne centre. 1 lie tunnel had never
lieen arched but was "cribbed its tntire
It D-'lh. some seven hundred feet, and al
ter beinir one-e ignited burned with great
tury. The tire originated from sparks
from a lots .motive, and had gained great
headwav belore bctns diftcwered. hen
the Express west reached the tunnel Sun
day mot ning it was promptly flagged by
the watchmn ; but, after learning that
the fire had but an hours' start ot him, the
engineer said he could "make it," and
pulled into the smoking bell. The train
reached the western end just in time lo
prevent the paaaengers from sjiothering to
death. It u a fool hardy teat, though a
brave one. Superintendent Hyndman
was informed of the conllairration and pro
ceeded to the tunnel with a large force of
hands. Telegraph stations were establish
ed at either approach the western end
boarded up to stop the draft ; engines sent
from Cumberland and Connellsville and
an effort made to quench the tiauvs. but.
though the firemen worked manfully, the
fire had too much of start and is still burn
ing this (Mm lay) morning. Passengers
and light freight are being transferred.
At several places it is thought that the
intense heat has caused the tunnel to cave
in. and Superintendent Hyndman reports
that the road will be blockaded at that
point for several days. In the mean time
they will hardly want through passengers,
although they may be able to handle light
express articles, which will be transferred.
while the freight traffic must necessarily
be entirely suspended until the damage
caused by the fire has been repaired

do not gamble, neither are they allowed to
