Whetstone recently made an extensive trip through the Iiocky mountains, aud. at the request ot lus con greealion, he lectured on what he had seen there. From his description the trip was well worth the time aud money that it cost. Many of the sights he descrilied were little less than marvelous, and made us quite long to be possessed ot ducats enough to go and sec for ourselves. The lecture was listened to attentively by a large audience composed of the elite ot the village. 1 he time w as too short tor the ltev erned. gentleman to describe more than hall he saw, and it is to be hoped that at some future time he will give us the rest ol it. He closed hts leclure by advising his audience to economize at the table, in the wardrobe, every aud all places, except their newspniicr s and preacher s suuscrip lion list, in order to save mouey enough to make the tup. A Tornado is Mipdi.ecrkek Tows- einr. One of the most terrific storms ever witnessed in this section passed throuch apart of Middlecrcek township yesterday. The citizens along the route have many limes ban nerce thunder storms to break in on them, but they now have a better kleaot a tornado than they could ever get by reading ot them passing through and demolishing towns on the western plains. Just how far west the tornado original ed we arc not able to say, bnt the first ef fects ot it are seen at Jacob llenrj ' saw milL From there it passed towards the south-east, up through woodland, tearing nearly all the timber in Its path, w hich varied Irom thirty to lorty rods in w idth. At the summit of the hill it struck the lurm of Smith B. King. Here it was first seen by Mr. King's neighbors, and it came thundering, and rolling, aud roarijg, aud sweeping the very earth loose, twisting every tree off in its path, and w hirling the to high toward tbe low an gry clouds that were darting here and there, the air darkened by splinters, limbs and leaves; it waa enough to make the strongest nerve tremble. It passed over Mr. King's buildings, trariug the roof off ol his spring house, making several large holes in the barn roof, and completely de molishing his sugar-house. The princi al part of his fruit fees were standing near the bouse and they were all destroy ed. Pnly one edge of the storm, touched the barn, but bis house stood directly in the centre of its path. Alter looking at the destruction around the house it seems almost miraculous that it escaped. Leaving King's farm it passed over the farms of John Barron, Jacob Baker, and Samuel Dickey, tearing down nearly every tree aud fence in its path. Fortunately no other buildings lay in its course. Those w ho saw il iabs over Laurel Hill creek say it lifted almost the enlire body ot tbe wa ter op and whirled it around several limes belore letting it drop. Mr. Baker's new woolen ladory narrowly escaped. Nearly one huudrcd pounds of wool which he had It iug loose in tbe old factory was snatch ed up and scattered to tbe four winds. Belore tbe tornado got through Mr. Dick ey's tarm it had spent alt its fury, and passed ou over the. hill and surprised the citizens of New Lixingtoa in the shape of a shower of green things, leaves and wool. Notwithstanding tbe great damage done, we are thaukful no lives were lost. Mr. King was the rui exposed, bat fortunately escaped with only a few bruis es. He was in the field at work when he saw the storm coming, and started home but was caught when at the end of the porch by the top of an apple tree 'and tbe w ind whirled him to one side. He crept under the cpriug bouse porch, and when the roof was blown oil a part strac'i the porch, and that ffigntcning him' he work ed himself into the cellar. It affords me pleasure in presenting my ! third rrnori. tnhs aLta to do tn with a (wl- ' ing that tho past year has been one fraught with good cheer to the friend ol education in thin munt v. A1ihnu j ed with no striking innovations, i "U niara- its histo ry is replete with satisfactory evidences of improvement m every way. Boards of directors were more careful in selecting teachers, the attendant of pupiU was bet ter than during any previous term, and more interest was manilested in the cause of popular education by directors and pa trons than formerly. BOUSES. Commodious buildings are gradual ly taking the place of old dilapidat ed structures, which were in many cases miserable hovels, that have been tolerated until forbearance has ceased to be a virtue, and directors apcar, in most instances, to be anxious to supersede the worst of these with better houses as fast as they can pru dently take measures to do so. And. not withstanding the financial depression which paraiyzes almost every public enter prise, ten new school houses were erected during the year, viz: one in Allegheny, one in Berlin, one in Concmaugh, one in Elklick, one in Paint, one in Shade, one in Somerset township, one in Southamp ton, and one in Summit All are substan tial frame buildings except the one at Ber lin, which is a large two-story brick build- : - i.i.j .i,u ing, confining .our '"""""jwhicli Weighed forty-seven and one-halt Eiklick and Milford have also been sup plied with patent seats and desks, which speaks loudly in favor of the enterprising school boards of these districts. Fifteen houses are totally unfit for use, aud some of them have been so for years; but the di rectors, we arc pleased to say, have, in a measure at least, caught the spirit of im provement, and before long they will be replaced by new buildings, and many oth ers, not well filled for school purposes, will share the same happy fata. TEACI1EUS. Those who were employed in the schools generally labored arduously in their no ble calling. Strenuous efiorls were made by a large proportion to render their fchool-roouis attractive; but unfortunately f r the schools, the frequent change of teachers is still a formidable barrier iu tbe w ay of perfect success. Tiiis should not be so. When a teacher performs his duty faithfully, his services should bo sought in tbe same school for a numlicr of consecu tive terms, as he will be the better prepar ed to imparl knowledge 'o his pupils as his acquaintance wub their tlmerent tem peraments increases. Again, quite a num ber of our most proficeut teachers leave the county annually for no other reason than simply that they can procure better wages in other fields of hibor. It is the master that makes the school, and it is hoped that our school boards w ill make an effort to retain our best teachers by com couiensaling them more liberally for their meritorious services. SCHOOLS. Two hundred aud twenty-eight schools were in session during Ihe winter. Of this number one hundred and niuely-seven were taught by males and thirty-one by females. Some of the higher branches were taught in twelve schools, and the German language in two. There are ten gradtd schools in Hie county, a nuiuoe.r ot w hich are all that could he expected ol them, while a lew still lack in classifica tion and accommodations; crowded into small rooms poorly ventilated and equip ped, they have become a public nuisance which we deprecate, and hope taat tae powers that be will take the necessary steps in this matter before another term opens. It is the primary schools to which we refer, and as many children must ob tain all their schooling in these, it is sin cerely hoped that this iniiwrtunt m itler wi.l be more closely looked alter than heretofore. The school at Shanksvillc should also be graded, ns it is impossible for one teacher to give proper attention to so large a number of pupils. One school was ungraded during the year. 1 his w as done by the directors of Wellersburg boi ough, deciding to have all their pupils taught by one teacher. The schools were not all classified as thoroughly as desired, but improvement is evident. VISITATIONS. It has always been my aim to visit ev ery school in the county at least oucc. The last session I visited ail once except five, and two ol those were not ooen w hen I was near them, and I could not reach them again without traveling a long dis tance, as they are in different parts ot the county. Three I did not go to, as they are in out-of the-way places, and the weather was very inclement when I was in the neighborhood, so I supposed I would find but few, if any scholars in attend ance. 1 weive were visited twice, and a lew three times, making in all visits. During my visitations I gave special atten tion to the teachers' methods ot instruc tion, mode ot government, neatness, con dition of grounds, and gave instructions whenever I thought necessary. In every district directors accompanied me some times the whole board. 1 bad the pleas ure also ot meeting mmy patrons. Tbe presence ot parents and directors gave en couragement in this arduous work. There were more visitations bj the parents dur- ng tbe last term than ever belore. I he directors in nearly all the districts aver aged one visit each month, but the visits were not regular except in a tew districts. I trust that sucb visitations will even lie more frequent in the future, as tbey al ways result in good. Those districts have the best schools, in every respect, '.hat are most visited by directors and parents. The District Superinteadency was adopt ed in bnt two districts in the county. Can not something le done to secure more lo cal supervision 1 I referred to this matter in my first report, hoping it would en courage other school hoards to adopt the same measures ; but I am sorry to say that this, the most efficient plan ot school visi tation ever adopted, has been neglected, not, I am certain, because it doc. not sub serve a most excellent purpose, but, per- hsps.on tbe principle that no money should be paid for the supervision of schools. It is hoped that this part of the directors' duty will receive more attention hence forth. INSTITUTES. The County Institute convened at Som erset, Monday, December 24, and ccntinu ed iu session five days. A lively interest was maai.cstcd during the entire session by the friends of education, and especially by the teachers, as a greater number assem bled for the purpose ot conferring u;xn the great question of common-school edu cation than have ever met at any point in the county hitherto. We know that the Institute is becoming more ixmular each year, and believe it fires the teachers with renewed seal in their onerous work. In structions were given and lectures deliv ered by Prof. J. A. Brush, of Mt. Union College. Ohio; Prof. Z. T. Rush, of Mt. Fieaaant Institute, ft.; llev. N. U. Critcb- fleld, and others. A large portion of the work was assigned to tbe teachers, w bo, we are proud to say, responded in almost every instance with credit to themselves and with profit to tbe institute. Local in stitutes were in operation in several dis tricts during tbe winter. I was present at two of these; one at Berlin and one at Sleyeradale. 1 hey were well-conducted. and reflect credit upon their enterprising teachers. At the examinations I urged the teachers to attend the County Institute; also requested the directors to allow them at least a part ol ihe time, and expressed it as my opinion that local institutes would be potent auxiliaries in strengthening public sentiment in favor of '.he common schools. We take pleasure in saying that tbese suggestions were at least partly re ceived, and trust that still more good may be done ia this way. KXAU IKATIOXS. Thirteen public examinations were lielJ throughout the county it central locatiuu?, usually combining two or three districts) in one examination. These with a few ex ceptfcVnt were e!l attended by citi7ens and a 1 rectors.
