His oration, ("Fi nance" was the theme), so overshadowed even thing else tbat our reporter forgot, if he ever knew, what else did happen. The views of Mr. M. on the financial question are pronounced rather startling. At Ultncoc there was a jolly old fash ioned celebration of the day. An immense crowd was in attendance. The Union Celebra tion and Sunday-school pic-nic at Mineral Point on the Fourth of July was a pleas ant aiTttir. Tbe early morning brought crowds of people from every quarter, and by ten o'clock tbe schools nnd citizens w-ere in line and on the march for the cool umbrageous shades in the north ot town, near the site of the old Slioaff sehool house. Here a large anjeipaViois ros trum was erected, trimmed w ith 11 'ers and profusely festooned and shaded with evergreens. This was lor the speakers and the choii during the proceedings. Comlorlable seats were placed in the grand natural auditorium. The weather was all that could be desired; a clear sky and burning sun brightened the day; sweet breezes of balmy air refreshed the shades, and the trembling leaves sang nature's an them to ihe glorious scene. The Commit tee ot Arrangements had mde ample preparations for the lull accommodation o! every one present. A large barelof ice cold lemonade, free as the pure water it was made of. stood in a conspicuous place, and was indulged in w ithout money or price; candies, nuts, cakes and fruits were in reserve for the little ones, to be issucal out w ilbout stint al the proper lime; there were piles on piles of he choicest luxu ries in the way of spring chickens. Teal, lamb, ham sandwiches, pound and spiced cakes, pies of any and every sort, vegeta bles, golden butter, glades cheese, white clover honey and treacle. Oh, lb it I had a bill of fare, so that I might ull good eaters w hat was there. Father I'nruh asked tbat a kind prov idence might hallow the day made sacred to liberty, give peace and harmony to the occasion, and make it a sunny remem brance to all the participants. The choir, led by Ed II. Werner, a prince among singers, then sing "Lead Me On," after which Prof. D. W. Will read, in a forci ble manner, the Declaration of Independ ence. W. II. H. Baker then sang "The Star Spangled Banner." The choir sang "Eighteen Seventy Six' in fine style, alter which Col. H. B. Barnes took the stand and delivered an oration. I have heaid the Colonel before on similar occasions, and bis style was chiefly declamatory, but to-day il was el oquent, argumentative, replete with re corded facts as to the past, and with brill iant hopes lor the future. At tbe conclu sion of his cheering jieroration he took his scat amid clapping of bands and the grat ulations ot his auditors. The choir sang "Let tho Children Come," followed by an address by ltev. Unruli to the Suuday scbools. This speech carried with it the earnest force of a great worker in a pood cause. The next song was "Ked White and Blue," followed by an address by Prol. John C. Weller. A perfect mastery of elocution and distinct enunciation were the peculiarities of this address; tbe bub- ject matter was clear, appropriate, and dignified, and was a til conclusion to me intellectual ceremonies of the day. All at once the verdant earth was covered with white and the bounteous provision hereto fore described spread before the people. Word went round, "this is a tree pitch in," and it was so. Here youth and beauty met not in the flying mazes ot the dance, but in the equally exhilarating spoi Uot "ring. " "hindmost o"l three." etc. etc. Between the hours of three ajd four o'clock p. m. the Superintenjtnl and Committe called the children in line and distributed the treat. There were no accidents nor un kinduess to mar the pleasure of the occa sion. Those w ho originated Ibis Celebra tion can recur with pleasure to a day spent in general joy. Spectator. The first Convention, held last fall at the same place, was such a decided suc cess that many of the friends prtsent ex pressed the tear that llie interest mani fested was too lively, and the enthusiasm created was due mainly to the novelty of the enterprise; but tn this llisir prediction ihey were sadly disappointed, because tbe succees ol an association of this kind docs not depend on its novelty, nor upon the place of its meeting, but wholl" upon the genuine interest ot the workers of the charge. The Declaration of Independence was then read by A. E. Mil ler. The Lambert, Graeff and Shade de c- gates appeared and were met by a commit tee who escorted tbem to Ibe grounds and assigned places for their conveyances. j he meeting was called to order by ltev. J. L. Miller, pastor of tic charge, alter which the Convention was organized by. calling John W. Hammer to the chair E. M. Lambert was chosen Secretary. Af ter tbe organization was effected, the choir furnishciranother song, when Hev. J. L. Miller took the stand and delivered an oration full ot sublime thoughts and inter est the subject being "Our Independence and its Enlightening Inlluenee. 1 lie oration was billowed by a song. The question What relation should the Mem bers ol the Church sustain to tlie fca'.iuatii School was opened by Mr. Trent in a neat little speech, clearly show ing the po sition of church members anil their duties. Tbe Miller family furnished the meeting with an excellent piece ot niufic. The family is an extraordinary one, as they have a peculiar talent for music. Oue lit tle boy, not four years of ngi3, can sing any piece "of music in Bliss and Saukcy's mus ic book, called "Gospel Hymns." Alter the discussion of queries, in which a num ber of tbe brethren took parttbe benedic tion was pronounced, and the Convention adjourned lo meet at 3 o'clock, but was prevented by a heavy rain setting in. 1 lie people ot liooversvuie i.ave nirnin added fresh laurels to themselves by their generous hospitality. 1 hey have gained golden opinions lrom those who will for ever bold them iu grateful remembrance for their acts of kindness and their socia bility. And should ye local ever have the pleasure ot meeting any of these people of Iloovcrsvillejhc will be happily entertained by either ol the Vt eigie luiniiics, bamuel Swank. Boss Griffith and a score ol others. A Convention will be held about the middle of September, and in all probabili ty Lambcrtsviile will be selected for the next meet ing. MXKETARY. Somerset Cla ssis. This Chiisis met in Somerset, June ii, is.s, ai .j o'clock p. m. Riv. C. L. Ileiiman, the President, preached the opvning wrnnn to a good audience. Nine ministers and eight delegate elders were present during the session. The officers lor the current year are the following : Hcv. W. H. Bates, President; Hev. A. E. Truxal. Treasurer; Hev. S. II. Bridenbaugh, Corresponding Secretary; Hev. H. F. Keener, Slated Clerk. Friday forenoon session aud part of the afternoon were taken up with the par ochial reports. These reports show a com mendable activity on the part ot the pas tors, and cncjuraging succcs in their work. The statistics foot up as follow s : Pas tors 9, consregalions mcinticrs 40', unconfirmed members 101b, baptisms dur ing the year 250, additions to ihe church benevolent moneys $1,411 OS, local objects SV-I.JO 50. i"hc proceedings were mainly ot a busi ness character except iu the evening when divine services were held. Sunday even ing was devoted to a missionary meeting, at which addresses were made bv Hevs. Bates and Hcilman. Sunday at 10 a. m. tbe communion services were held; H'tv. S. R. Bridenbaugh preached the sermon. These services were well attended. On Sunday at U r. m. a Sunday-school meet- in:: was held, at which Revs. Keener and Steckel acd Elder W. J. Baer made ad dresses. The pulpits of the Methodist, Evaugelic.il and Lutheran churches were supplied by ministers ot the Classis. It was resolved to hold a Sunday school convention at such time and place as the committee appointed may determine. Tbe committee consists of Hevs. Hcilman, Steckel and Elder Samuel Foust. ELtJfEST. It was brought to the attention of the Chassis that Elder Peter Wilhelin, recently deceased. It-fore his decease had granted certain lands t certain trustees, and pro vided in the same for the payment of $l."i,0J). out ofthe moneys realized, to Ihe Somerset Classis for the purpos of estab lishing an Academy in feomersct county, at such point as will do most for the iusli stution. Eider alentinc Hav, Esq.. and Revs. Truxal and Bridenbaugh were ap pointed a committee to look after this matter. He vs. Truxal, Keener aud Bridenbaugh were appointed a committee to inquire in to the practicability ol constructing two charges out of a hat is now Beam's charge. and some other churches not now rcguiar- lurlv in any charge. This is a move in the richt direction and oiicht to succeed. Another fact seems worthy ol record; namely, that the members ot the L Ussis were hospitably entertained during their session. .Mrs. a. t.. hick, oi uie Miiier set House, entertained the whole Class's on Saturday at noon. Such a feast is sel dom seen, and still m re seldom parUiken of by all the memlic; -i of a Classis or fcjn od. Tbe best placo to study any spe cies, naturalists tell us, is in its habi tat, and for those who want to know what a bappy satisfied triunity of tbe ass, ape and peacock, a Frenchman is, the place to see hitn is Paris. Tbe Frenchman out of Paris is a crest fallen creature, as little like tbe spe cies at borne, as tbe cowed beast of tbe menagerie is like the kin of tbe forest, roaring and gesticulating with bis tail. Although we have read much about tbe French, we know tbem Ies3 than some utter European peoples They are seen only on par ade, one seldom catches a glimpse of their inner life They are less dis posed t i emigrate tban tho Germans, English, Scandinavians, or, even than the Italians, and I hope, 33 far as we are concerned, tbey may long remain saiisGed with their present borne. I have frequently deplored the conceit and" braggadocio of our people, tfceir fourth of July vaunting ct our institutions enl natural re sources ; it has always Feerued a spe cies ol egotism in which Americans 6hould not indulge, and 1 bad sop posed it was a vico peculiar to our selves; but 1 have learned since 1 have been in Europe, that an Eng lishman can outbrog an American, and tbat a Frenchman can out-brag an Englishman. You can not go into a barber shop without having tbe barber tel! you tbat Paris is a grand viiie, and this is about all the English be knows. Paris is, no doubt, a "grand ville," the treasure, and sweat, and blood, and genius tf tbe world and tf the ages, have Wen persuaded, stimulated, compelled to contribute to the ad irument of this 'bloated Ilaraseanciv" For those who cn lot.k at its eplndid palaces, and forget that they represent the cheated rutted lints of iui'.I.o.s tf peasant., tr at the antique collections of the Louvre, and ignore the fact that they were mostly stolen by royal or imperial brigands ; or at its splen did boulevards, and not see m tbem the vanity if ibe second empire, the extravagant energy that, otherwise directed, ni'ght have resisted Prus sian Conquest. Pat is is no doubt a grand ville. Tbo grand ville may lie tolerable for a little while, H is good lor purposes of dissipation and for broadening one's horizon ; but it is difficult to have much repee. for those Americans who have txptitriaud themselves, and arc cotitcui to live here. Si far as my uti:iTv'ait.m goes ttey are a rather weak ejbariti.h lot of Ameri cans anyhow. We can do just as well without them. The men and wemeu who can live on a roll and cap of ctlTee for break fast, and Cnd their highest beatitude in sitting out in front of a ca fe drink ing coffee and cognac, and admiring the Btjles cf the promenading demi monde, from twilight till bedtime, will perhaps do their country least barm by representing it abroad.
