The 1 l.i'i i inffi ur 1 -.eat.'tti !! e l.iiOT mill 1 ?Jf Illlri- tntss places compare tavorably wnui any in Somerset county. It is populated by an industrious, energetic people, and the visitor will not fail to receive the courtesy and hospitality of its citizens. The prin cipal industry "of the place is coal mining and the building of boats and barges. Near ihe village is the Southwestern No.-msl College, w hich very quickly at tracts the eye of the visitor. This insti tution was recognized, May 25, 1571, as the State Normal School of the Tenth Normal School District, consisting of Somerset, Fayette. Green aud Washington counties. The grounds consist of about ten acres, located in a beautiful valley, and Lave been much improved lately by t He planting of ornamental and shade trees, w hich add much towards making it attractive lor the young men and women seeking its scholastic training. The build ings are three; a central one tor school work and two wings serving as dormito ries f r the young laeiiis and gentlemen. 1 ho chapel is on the second floor, ap- proached by two elegant stair uises, and is a beautiful room, being one hundred and ten feet long, forty-lour Ice', wide and twenty-two feet high. The Ciionian and Philoxaathean Societies are iu a llourish condition. A great deal of interest ia manifested in them by the members. The rooms are always crowded, aud the per loraiances, w hick consist ol" vocal and in strumental music, select reading, orations, essays and debate, are alwsys well pre pared and well perlormed. I would like lo say more about this ins:itution. but tune and s;ace w ill not permit. "Clio." Etiivon IIeiiai.u Allow me room for a few remarks concerning diphtheria. This is a cotis'.itutioaal disease. The coating or exudation seen in the throat is characteristic of diphtheria, just as the eruption of small pox, scarlet fever, me-h.-ie-s, etc. Ci!Mtion. Il is well known that this disease originates in badly ventilated lo calities, or where tueie is decomposing or ganic matter in damp, cold, dirty.mouldy dwellings, where there exist suitable con ditions for the production ot mould. The coating or membrane that forms on the throat is a microscopic fungus tt,!v jori urn fit truth which grows between the ceils of the mucous tissue. Alcohol and spirits of camphor w ill de-slroy this spe cies of fungi. II jw can wc avoid ttktnj the disease? Examine tare-fully your deiiing-k:usf- from attic to cellar. See that the root dots not leak ia any part; that the garret is clean and well aired; all the rooms in the house, whether used or not, must be kcpt dry and well aired: bK.'t well to the ,, d chimneys. esrcw!Iy those that arc n arc not iu use. Ail vegetable must to re moved from the cellar as wcli as all kinds of dirt, and so arranged that a current of air will pass through all the lime. Il is CikxI to white-wash at spring and fall. See that all the drains are ocn and clean, sprinkle them with fresh lime. Examine your wells and cisterns Carefully. Now supruse a niemtor ol the family complains ot sore throat: I will mention something j that uinst not to done. Also, w hat may to dune w ith safety and tonefil. Do not swab or burn the throat with any strong medicine. It requires a skillful physician to swab the throat w ilhout doing positive injury. Do not use any hot or burning medicine inside or outside, such as pepper-tea, strong liniment, mustard, carton oil, blisters, etc, because Ihe throat is too much irritated already. Do not give a dose ol pills; they are t' slow and un certain in their action, to sides ensuited to Ihe disease. Vou may give a dose of ep som salts or castor oil. Give sufficient to act promptly. I name these liecause they are nearly always at hand. For a gargle, take vinegar and water, each one pint, ta ble salt, one spoonful. Around the neck place a piece of clean, soft flannel; put the patient lo tod, covering just comfortably, and send for a physician at once; if it proves to to diphtheria he cannot come one moment too soon. If it is no grave allection, one visit will suffice. I will ap pend a formula for a gargle in the second or third stage ot the disease: K. Salicylic Acid, 40 grains. Sexto Biboras, 1 drachm, Aqua Distil., 1 pint. In this disease let the patient Lave the essentials ot life, pure air, light, anJ C'hhI IikkI. .EVrt-APirs- JE-NXLR X Roads Itkms. The patient was etherized aud a piece of flesh three iuches long by one inch iu width, together with the tumor, w as removed, and another piece exactly the same length, breadth and sha;ie was taken from the temple and check and nicely fitted in the wound. In order to do this forty stitches were necessary, the wound iu the temple being brought to gether by additional stitches. There will, to but slight disfigurement by this novel operation. In her death we mourn the loss of one w ho was always found in her place during the worship in the sanc tuary. Zealous for the Master's cause, she consistently practiced what she professed. The church sustains a loss in her death which we sadly realize. A husband mourns the loss of a loving and devoted companion, wile and thiM. Children are bereft of an affectionate mother and broth er. But while the afflicting rod ol the all-w ise God has been severely laid upon us, we have the happy consciousness that our loss is their everlasting gain. There fore we would to still, O.
