The news of a terribfe affair reached us from Jones' Mills. While oilier sections have been furnishing the press w ith startling news, it scenii l) hsye fallen to the lot t'f West moreland county to furnish her shaie of thai class of reading matter. The tacts, as far as w e have been able to gather them, of Ibis aitrocious deed, are substantially as follow c: About two miles north of Jones' Mills, in Donegal tow ns.bip, lives one Alexander tueer. For some lime past, for some cause, the domestic circle has not been of the most pleasant kind, and upon several occasions ljueer and his wife indulged in a mailstrom of words, which made their home anything but what it ought to be. Things grew worse and worse -until on Monday Mrs. (Juecr lelt her husband and went to Dr. Scott's, one of Queer's neigh bors. Queer, becoming exasperated at his wile's conduct, visited Jones' Mills w here he imbibed freely ot "fire-water," and, being somewhat intoxicated, proceeded to the resilience ot Dr. Scolt, where he found his wile. On entering the house he made an assault upon ht-r, striking her on the head, knocking her down, and iu a most inhuman manner commenced to pound her head with a stone. After feelipg sat isfied that he had accomplished his fiend ish purpose, he proceeded to the wood shed, w here he secured an axe, and, en tering the house again, destroyed the cook stove and broke up all the furniture in the room, after which he proceeded to a clump of laurel bushes a short distance from the house, w here he concealed himsell. Dr. Scott was absent from home and his wile was confined to her bed in an adjoining room. A number of the neighbors hear ing of the sad affair, immediately proceed ed to the house, where they touud Mrs. Queer lying ujion the floor, in an insensi ble condition and apparently dead. Search was immediately instituted for Queer, and it was not without some difficulty tbey succeeded in arresting him. He was taken to Ihe otllce of 'Squire McLain. w here a strong guard kept watch over him until Tuesday morning when he was taken to Grecnsburg and lodged in jail. At this we learn that but little hoie is'ea- is entertained of Mrs. Queer's recovery. and that Mrs. Scott is lying in quite a critical condition. Great excitement pre vails in the neighborhood and it was ilh some difficulty that the crowd was pre vented from lynching Queer when he was first arrested. .1.'. l'ltaant Daim. xci en t Casti.es. What appeals to the imaginative and reflective powers of man more than the ruins of some ancient ivy covered and forsaken castle ? Poets have invited the muses to help them weave into verse the legendcric chivalry and bravery that history accords to their loriucr owners and occupants. Painters have vied with each other in portraying the grandeur of their solitude and decay. But is not the premature and social wreck of thousands ot young people, annually, a theme thai should appeal much more keenly to the reflective faculties of man ! Dr. K. V. Pierce, of Buffalo, X. Y., pre scribes his Golden Medical Discovery in such affections with the most gratifying re sults. No known remedy equals or com pares with it in purifying and enriching the blood, strengthening and invigorating the nervous system. II the bowels be constipated, use his Pleasant Purgative Pellets. While in the East, I, like many others, was always anxious to hear something ol the Great West; and thinking that there may be some there yet to whom a little western news would give them some idea ot the conn trr, or some encouragement if they thiuk of coming out here to make a home. First to give a dcsciiption ol the country: it is a beautiful rolling scotte of our west ern country; not so level as to be wet, and n jt marshy nor rolling enouzh to wash in wet seasons. The soil is somew hat like that found along tbe Cassclmin river in Elklick and Summit townships, of old Somerset county, only I think it is strong er. Being formed of a vast amount ol de composed vegetable matter, it w tne very best et land for agricultural purposes. The planting season is at hind here now. and everybody is as busy as bees, planting corn. Some commenced planting two weeks ago, are planting now, and will plant for two weeks to come. Grain looks well: winter wheat is from eight to ten inches high; spring wheat is about four inches high and covers the giound as a beautiful green sheet; oats is about three inches high and looks very well: rye U from ten to thirty inches high, aud some pieces are in head at the bight ot thirty inches: I can see one piece of rye trom where I am writing, that is nicely headed. Potatoes are up and crowing finely, and people are still planting. Apples and cherries are inlliom, peach bloom ln.s lallen on, and trees ot all kinds are coated with a thick, heavy load ot nice, large ureen leaves, such as may lie seen in Som erset county in the month ol June. The weather is warm, and occasionally very windy, which, ol course, winds up every few days witli a good shower of lain, We have had but one squall of snow since I am here, and that was on the 21Ub ol March. It seemed strange to me to see corn two and a half inches high, and rye in iicad on taster Sunday, and yet it is true. To say something of the markets; corn is worth from 20c to 2Sc per buohel, spring wheat from 75c to 80c per bushel, winter wheat from 90c to tl per bushel, cattle are worth Irom $223 to (275 per hundred. Hogs Irom (225 to $25 per hundred, pota bles, 45c per bushel, butter, P2Jc per pound, eggs, Cc per dozen. Farms can be bought here that are in a good state ol cultivation, at trom f 13 to $23 per acre. I he prospect at present indicates a a very heavy harvest. People are plant ng a large acreage of corn. I arm latior is worth Irom $15 to (20 per month, day labor aliout f 1 a day. A few cases ot ague are reported in this vicinity. The National Greenback) I, caitinue tc'inciease here. Any further inlormaliou will be forwarded on application. Yours truly, W. A. .jcott Bibd. Falls City. Xeb., Apiil 21. 1S78. OUrlHTaAIEKT (VrrwlFil ty Coos a rtECRiT.
