From Cumberland we tore through that

Editor Hkrald. In your last issue
there aoneareJ an articl;, "Norihy
Teachers." in which complaint is matle
that several prominent teachers of Mil-
lord township are not mentioned in rroi
Whipkey s report ot the schools ol somer
set county. In justice to all parties we
deem it proper a word should be said to
exp'a n w hy such worthy and cxcelhnt
teachers as Trota. Will . and vv ener ao not
appear in the County Superintendent's re
port. We fully ami cordially endorse an
the directors of Milford township have
said concerning the valuable work these
gentlemen have done in the schools of our
county, and we also believe luev are gen
erally and justly recognized as teachers of
sterling worth, and we Know mat rroi
Whipkey is lully sensible ot iue goou
woik they have accomplished in the cause
of education: tor bad bis history of our
schools appeared as it ia written in the
manuscript he sent to the department.
rof. ill would be filly noticed as a
teacher and as County Superintendent;
but. unlortunatelv lor Prof. Whipkey, all
he had i il of our Cotn'y Superintend
ents was omitted by the Department. His
matter Was condensed to eleven pages.
Ibis being one page more than Somerset
county was entitled to. The directors of
Miltord must not thiuk the services of Prol.
Weller are unappreciated bw-ause his name
is not mentioned. There are a number ot
teaers in our county whose marked and
zealous educational efforts within the last
decade would also entitle them to a place
in the history of our schools if the object
ol the history were to bestow a panegyr
ic upon all the "leading living teachers;"
but this was not the intention of Prof.
Whipkey, nor was it the idea of Dr.
Wickersham. Tbe object was to embody
the tacts of the jW those out of mind,
and not those ot the jtrttent, and this has
been admirably carried out by the histori
an. 1'rol. Weller and lus deseving con
temporaries who labored not less earnest
ly nor less successfully, must bide Ihe
time when their present work shall be

Glexcoe Items. Glencoe is a small
village situated in the south-eastern part
of Somerset county. Tbe population is
about 00 to 65 as near as I can tell. It is
small, but still it is not deprived of some ot
the requirements that are necessary to
lormatown. There are two stores, one
hotel, one doctor, one chair factory, oue
blacksmith and one saw mill. These dif
ferent lhing6 are all conducted by promi
nent men.
The saw mill is doing a good business,
and tbe reason is because it is managed
by good, industrious men, that take for
their motto, "Work while it is called to
day." Mr. Samuel Wilt has recently moved to
this place for the purpose ol keeping a
first-class hotel. Mr. W. was a well
known and prominent citizen ot Stoys
town, this county. We wish him success.
The candidates have been numerous
here tor tbe past week; the boys say they
won't vote tor them, for they didn't set up
the c gars.
There have been quite a number of
ties made in this vicinity tbe past winter;
2.2H! were inspected at this place ou the
7lb inst. The boys say they won't make
any more, tor red (mint is cheaper than
blue.
The schools have closed in this town
ship: as far as we can bear they were a suc
cess. Mr. J.V.Li.t closed on tbe th,
and on the same evening he gave them an
entertainment. The ei erases consisted of
spelling, reading, declamations and ad
dresses. Tbe boys said the best fun was
at recess, for they had a lively time play
ing ring and kissing the robust mountain
girls.
Mr. Wilt says be Intends to give a free
drink to all w hen be gets bis snapps. We
intend to keep it a secret, lor if we don't
all those candidates from Somerset will
meet here and drink a barrel or two.
We would say a word to all those city
folks who intend going out for their
health next Summer, come to this place,
for we have fresh air, good w ater, plenty
ol trout and every thing that is grand and

saddler trade in the city ol Pittsburgh.
He was in Genera! Jackson's army as a
soldier, at New Orleans, on the ever
memorable tilth of January, 1815, where
the victory gained by the Americans over
the British was unparalleled in our history-
In 1820 Captain Morrow came to Som
erset, and from that time to the day ol
his death, resided within the limits ol the
county. Ue was universally respected as "
a man of high integrity throughout the
course of a long lid4, aud descended to the
tomb at the ripe old age of 84 years.
When the weak han-t icaows palnleil.
And he eye beeomei dim with the mlt id xe,
Then It ' time to die."
In tbe month of February. 1877, Major
John W. Lynn, alter a lingering illness,
departed this life at.tlie town ot Conflu
ence, Somerset county, in the seventy
sixth year of his age.
Major Lynn was born in the town or
Somerset, and was endowed by nature
with a vigorous and active mind. In 1824,
he was a law student under Captain
liogers, of Fayette county; but the un
timely death of Captain Rogers, at
Brownsville, on the reception of Ueneial
Latayette, by the bursting ot a cannon,
deprived him of his preceptor and put an
end to bis lefal studies. Had he pursued
the study ot the law, and come to tbe

ot those that knew him well that his

After leaving Somerset, he resided a
number of years in the town ot Smith
field in this county, and moved from
tueoce to Cumberland. Maryland. For a
few years before his death be resided in
Continence. He left a widow and many
friends to mourn his departure. He met
the grim Messenger
'-Like one who kM the drapery ol' I b cuui-h

With unfeigned sorrow we announce
the death of John Neff, Esq , which took
place on the 2lith day ol March, 1878,
aged seventy -two years, and twelve days.
Squire Xetr was born in Somerset on
the 14th day of March, 1 HOC, aud duricg
the years of his manhood occupied a prom
inent position among the business men of
the town. In lS.io he was appointed
by Governor SV'oll, a Justice of the
Peace, which oitice he held to the satis
taction of the people until 1840, at which
time he was elected to the same ollics for
the term ot five years, under the amend
ed constitution of 1838. This shews the
estimation of his immediate neighbors at
that time, as the political complexion of
Somerset was largely against him.
He was the prominent Contractor in the
building of the Somerset &. Mineral Point
Kiilroad, and one of tbe few stockhold
ers who subscribed a thousand dollars for
the making of that valuable improvement
He was an enterprising and energetic
business man, a good neighbor and a
warm friend. T his own family and rel
atives his death is an irreparable loss.

It Si'staiss Its Reputation. For
nearly a quarter ot a century It has been
acknowledged that Dr. Sage's Catarrh
Remedy bas no equal in speedily and per

all catarrhal alleelious of the nasal cavi

ity are dependent upon and entirely due to
its merits and superiority over all other
similar preparations. Very many physi

are now prescribing it in their practice.

Dr. R. V. Pierce, Buffalo X. Y.:
Dear Hir. For years I suffered with
chronic catarrh. Last winter it became
