On the second Tuesday ol May next,
county, city, and borouen auperintenu

more important ejection, than that of
members of the Legislature or even that of

he is. We can name Superintendents in

level ol intelligence and morality. And,
unfortunately, we can name other whose

nothing. We write to ask school Direct

three sons, Abraham, iienjamin, and
Peter, and three daughters entered into a
covenant that they would never marry.
A Iter tbe death ot the latter each ot tbe
brothers took a sister to keep house for
him and settled down upon a separate
farm ot adlolninr land. In this way
these people lived liarujOQiotisIy and pfca
perously tot more than a generation. By
their joint labors and frugality they accu
mulated a large estate in land, property
and money, which were held and treated
pretty much as in common. But in time
they grew old, sod commenced paying the
debt of nature, one by uno and with al
most tbe same precision and order with
which they had lived. Abraham was the
first to depart, some fifteen years ago; then
a sister, and after ber Benjamin; next
another sister, and lastly, on the 14th in
stant, Peter Wilhelm died, after a brief
illness, aged 83 years. There still re
mainj another sifter, ripe for death high
up in eighty. All ot tueut have Ijyed be
yond their four-score.
true to their arrangement, none of
luese unique persons ever married, and as
their number diminished, their posse?-
sions concentrated.
Though very close and worldly in one
sense, in others they were generous and
confiding. Many thousands of dollars did
they lose by extending a helping hand to
tnose unwortny ot it. .ever a dol
lar did they make by speculation. AH
must and did come to them in the regular.
old-fashioned wayj but a good deal left
them in the modern ways of getting at the
confiding.
in latter years their minds and actions
took a benevolent And religious turn.
They had near kindred, but did not care
to divide much of tbeir fortune with them.
About ten years ago tbey made known
to their nefgUbors that tbey bad resolved
a fine church should be erected oo one of
their farms, for the benefit ot the people.
The community was asked to contribute
what they could, and the ilbelms would
foot tbe balance. The result was the
finest church edifice ( Reformed) by tar in
the county, with an organ and equipments
in full keeping. It was understood tb&t
this was only the beginning ot the benevo
lence and charities which they intended to
bestow in tbeir last years.
None of the family had any education.
and the men especially in their latter
years felt the deficiency keenly. They
determined to do something for tbe spread
of education and religion, but unfortun
ately. Peter, the last of the male part of
the family, who had thi matter most at
heart, postponed his good intentions too
long. On the 22d of February last he
made his will, disposing of what is said to
be tne largest estate in his county. Its full
contents are not yet known, but it is un
derstood that a bequest of $20,000 was
made to tbe community in bis county
hich would contribute the larg
est sum to this gift for educa
tional purposes. No doubt there were
similar donations, but all have come to
naught in consequence of tbe will not
having been made sooner. By a stati-t 2 of
Pennsylvania no bequests of ih'.s kind can
ta'te effect nnless the will is made one
month before the death of the testator.
The time in this case was eight days too
short. No doubt some forgotten heirs will
profit by this procrastinating act ot an old
man.
Soon another death, and then the well
known name of Wilhelm will be extinct
for tbe first time in a hundred years so tar
as this family is concerned, but it will not
be forgotten. "B.," in Cumberland Dttitg
