ed in this great land ot industry where all
kinds of inducements are held lorth to the
laboring men, and where thousands could
Und work and be supplied witu plenty,
were the various branches of business
properly protected. Who are idle at the
present time and brought down to poverty
through bad legislation r l deiy any man
to show me a sioirle act or Assembly pass
ed in favor of business and laboring men
since the war. Every thing in the line
ot labor and business has hail a down warn
tendency since that time. Money, which
bad been plenty, decreased in circulation
and passed into the bands of capitalists.
This brought a higher rate of interest that
ruined many hitherto prosperous business
men. Capital bas been ruling uie nation;
and labor, which bas upheld the entire
nation and kept it moving along, has not
been regarded. Labor should take the
lead in all respects, but it never will, as
lone as we elect lawyers, preachers, etc,
to public office- They only enact laws for
their own benefit; this is proven by the in
crease of courts. We must come to the
conclusion to elect men that have, and
will take an interest in our interests.
No man that Las never done a hanl day's
work or does not understand managing
any business; no man that bas been study
ing the dead languages, which the ma
jority of the rising generation appear to be
dolne.andlno man who knows anything ot
business should be elected. Experience is
the best of teachers, and in this school our
legislators should '.earn. I propose that a
convention be held in the mtererst ol, and
for the benefit,of the laboring men through
out the county, at Somerset, during mid
summer. The day to be selected hereaf
ter, aud all to be invited to attend and
have flags, banners, etc, prepared to suit
the occasion. Dakl.Mostoi.ler.

We take the privilege of publishing the
above inquiry, as the answer is thus more
likely to reach all concerned. It has been
the custom lor a number of years past to
hold the primary the last week iu May, or
the first week in June, and we see no good
reason for departing from the custom.
The April lerm of court, which runs into
May, would greatly interfere with the
canvass of many of the candidates, and it is,
therefore, unpolilic lo hold it on the first
Saturday ol May, as has been suggested;
we have therelore concluded to call the
primary for Saturday, June 1.

A Woni)kkhl Invention. An in
vention frugal wives will appreciate in
tact, an article that even rivals the sewing
machine in usefulness js now on exhi
bition at the Broadway store of the Wil
son Sewing MachTue Company, in thecity;
yet it is so wonuprlully simple that it can
scarcely be classed as an invenliop, and a
wonder lo everybody that it was cot dis
covered years ago. The invention con
sists of a very simple little attachment of
the Wilson shuttle sewing machine tor
darning all kinds of rijw, tears, worn-out
places, etc., in clothing, table and bed lin
en, stockings, underwear, etc., in the
same manner that it u d.iuu by hand, and
leaves the repaired part scarcely discerni
ble. The operator of the sew ing machine
can darn a large -sued bole ia a bed sheet
or tablecloth almost instantaneously. It
is to be regretted, however, that this won
derful invention is tented and owned by
the Wilson Sew ing Machine Company of
Chicago, III., w ho will not permit iu use
except with one of its make of sewing ma
chines, which, the Comany's manager
states, is lurnished w ith each of the Wil

prk-e. Truly, this is a golden nest-egg

Wilson Dull, Milton Zimmerman, Laura
Wireing, Cora Lichliter, Ella Zimmerman,
Lizzie Kobinson, Mary Dull, Ada King,
and Etta Berger.
The following have been present every
day during the term : Lizzie Robinson,
Ella Zimmerman, Lincoln Walter. Blair
Scott Etta Berger, and Ida Scott. Lizzie
Robinson bas not even bad a tardy mark
to disfigure the clean space marking her attendance.
We are pleased to note that the school is
in a flourishing condition. The scholars
seem to be interested in the work and are
doing all in their power to make the prop
er use of their time. We can truly say,
l'rsina girls and boys are earnest workers
in the grand and noble cause of education.
A bright and glorious future awaits some
of them; bence we say, "Work on; your
labors win undoubtedly be crowned with
abundant success."
Our directors deserve a word of praise,
also, tor tbe interest manitcsted in the
school work; they are men of good, sound
judgment.always standing by a teacher in
every time ot need. W e look ahead to
great advancements in the educational in
terest of this place.
Our citizens are also putting their shoul
ders to the wheel, and assisting us In push
ing forward in the work we are endeavor
ing to accomplish.
The number of visitors, addresses, and
words of encouragement spoken to both
teacher and scholar, must at once con
vince us, as well as the intelligent reader
ot this article, that Irsina people arc
wide awake and working earnestly aud
zealously in a cause which demands the at
tention of every true man and woman.
J. B. Whipkey, County Superintendent,
was with us January 31. We were high
ly pleased by tbe remarks made by him,
and also by those made by directors aud
citizens who were present at the same
time. A great and good work can be ac
complished in this way, by lriends visiting
the school and in their addresses corrobo
rating statements made by teacher. It
seems to impress more vividly upon the
minus oi the young and rising generation
the great value of an education.
The progress of the primary department
bas been quite satisfactory. Miss E. O.
llanna, teacher, is indeed an enthusiastic
worker in the school-room. The little
folks seem to be well pleased with her ad
ministration. During the month the fol
lowing pupils were promoted from ihe
primary to tbe grammar department:
v Ulie Uenlord, illiam Maust. William
Wills, Xorman Coder. Jennie Vansickle.
Annie Levy, and Cora Anderson. We
will be obliged to promote others shortly
on account of diligent application to their
studies.
w e cordially invite friends at home and
abroad to give us a call. You will always
and teacher and pupils of Lrsiua schools
ready to receive you with a hearty wel
come, t. B. Cook.
