tor frankly replied, "Lcnlins a wife."
"Come" said the rxiend cf Lone" stsnd-
ing, "with me to my beautiful town of
Shippenshorg. where Uie fairest ot the fair
daughters ot Ere lire. We have maidens
of sixteen and maidens of sixty, and wid
ows of every are." Had the Doctor taken
the elder Welltr's advice : "Bevare of
nddera," this Item would never have been
written. But he did not. Us stepped in
to "ye ancient borou go," and this is the
information riven tn tbe world : That on
or about the first day of November, is 77,
the matrimonially inclined temperance ad
vocate, under pretence of being a single
man, was united in marriage w ith Mrs.
Fannie L. Hummelabacgb, relict ot the
hoe Dominie Uummelabauga, and is a
niece of Wo. Keller, who becomes the
prosecutor in the case, who swears that he
has good reasons to believe that the said
J. b. Uscks wss a married man at Ou time,
and is guilty of bigamy. That since his
pretended marriage with the handsome
widow, he has taken possession ot her
portable properly, and evidences cf in
debtedness of others to her, consisting of
notes, bonds, mortgages, 4c., and thai he
has been and is now acting towards her in
an insolent and threatening manner, and
ii is believed by the uncie that Fannie is
in danger lrom him in both person and es
tate. In consequence of this state of af
fairs being told in the presence of one of
the peculiar American adaptations to
titt increase of business in the several
conns of the district, a justice of the peace,
the nnsuspe cling J. B. was brought belore
the representative of the law aad good or
der, and requested to "put up" a certain
amount ot "coliai," U insure his attend
ance at the January sessions ,or go where
good men sometimes go to jail. In jail
we found him ia earnest conversation w ith
a lriend. We approached him humbly
and were received by him kindly. After
a little preliminary conversation we pro
pounded the rather leading qatsiions, as
lollows :
Reporter. "Doctor, is it true that
you hare two wives'?"
Doctob, "No, Sir; not that I know of;
decidedly not.'
REr. "Why is it that this charge of
bigamy, etc., was brought against you?"
line. "That I don't know, unless it
was lor tbe sake of making money; I
would not know lor what eUe."
Rep. "They say you have a wife liv
ing in Chicago T"
I)oc, "That is not true."
Rep. Well, in Illinois or Iowa some
where." "Doc "We w ill answer that question
more particularly in court."
Rsp. "Were yoa a married man be
fore you mtrried this time-'!"
Ioc. "No, sir."
Rep. "Didn't Keller your prosecutor,
go to Somerset, your ok! home, to find cut
w hether you had another w;te living 7
Due. "lie sajs so." j
Rep. "On what does Keller base this ,
charge of bigamy?" j
Doc. "I don't know, nnltss for ths i
purpose ot extracting money lrom some I
person.
Rep. "Did the parties ofler to settle
with you before yoa were brought down
to Carlisle '
Doe. "Yes, sir. In Sbippensburg."
Rep. "What was their protition T j
Doc. "That I should leave the coun- j
ty, and turn Fannie's papere over to her."
Rep. "Why didn't you settle with !
taem?" "
Doc. "Because they asked Fasny to;
turn their papers over io tbem the notes I
and everything of value, and 1 said I
wouid rot in jail before they should rob
her and her children of their property. I
said to her, in their presence. 'Never
mind. Fannie, the consta'de and I will go
ut Carlifie and I will go to jai! before they
shall rob yoa ot all yoq have, and throw
you on the cold charities of Uie world.' J
want to say most empLaticallv. that this
charge against roe is flilse, anil is brought
for tbe purpose of making money out ot
me. They think I am worth I rem
tut) to f 100, (XXI, but they will be mis
Uken. I have sot tbe slightest idtathey
caa convict me, and I intend giviog ihem
a chance- I won't sacrifice principle for
w hatever personal suffering or inconven
ience they can give me now. My tinie
ill come after aw hile."
Reliable persons of Shippensbuig den
the charge ot crntlty as charged by Kel
ler, aad everything else, except that the
Doctor is loo mock married. Whether
he is or not, a short time will tell.
Tbe Doctor, in his confinement, is a
