HOW A DISCAKDED UrSBAXD ATTEMPT

The fire alarm on Tuesday night
was raised by Mrs. Miuuis Shalloe,
a colored women, wbo lives in a little
yellow bouse on Quiuer street, be
tween Second and Third. Accord
ing to ber statement 6b e went to bed
late, aud whej she retired set tbe
lamp on the floor in the corner cf tbe
room opposite one of tbe two from
windows. For some reason she did
not sleep well, iu fact, indulged in a
pleasiug succession of nightmares,
aud 6 jally she wassuddeuly deprived
of even this poor article of sleep by
f e crash of a broken wiadow and
tbe entrance of fomMbing looking
like a young comet, wbicb struck tbe
floor and tben blazed up and cracked
and sputtered and fizzed and made an
infernal noise generally. ' There was
little time to study up any extended
series of remaiks, aud so Minnie
rushed to the door and veiled "Mur
der " The cries aroused a colored
female neighbor, wbo added ber
yells to the racket. Tbe uoiso brought
Mr. Surfis across the street and tbe
police from up tbe street, and then
livelier time than the lower end of
Quiucy street bas witnessed since
tbat thoroughfare was laid out. Mr.
Surfis discovered tbe miniature vol
cano which bad caused all tuis row

stone, weighing three or four pounds,
wrapped in rags saturated in kero
sene and with tbe mass was a lot of
fire-crackers. This ingenious contri

doors, and did uo damage beyond
buruiug a bole in the carpel. Wbeu
these facts were established, the
