The reeultof tbe elections held in
tbe States of Ohio, Indiana, and
We6t Virginia on Tuesday last, sbow
most cooclusively tbat if tbe Repub
licans use their advantages wisely,
during tbe ensuing three weeks,
tbat tbeir Presidential ticket will be
elected.
In Ohio tbe Republicans have
elected tbeir State tieket by majori.
ties ranging from 4,000 to 10,000,
Lave secured both branches of tbe
Legislature, and have gained five
ad perhaps seven members of Con
gress. In the present Congress the
delegation stands, thirteen Democrats
to seven Republicans. In the next
it will be, twelve Republicans to
tight Democrats. This is a most
substantial Tictory and secures the
State to IIa es ia Novvmber by at
least 20,600 majority.
In Indiana, although the result is!
not quit so conclusive, tte Republic-.
ans have much the best of tbe fight.
They Lcve cut down the Democratic
majority of 17,000 to less than .,000,
nd although tbey fail to elect their
candidate for Governor, th?y have
parried both branches of the Legis
lature, and have made a gain of four
Members of Congress. Iothia Con
gress the Democrats have nine mem
ben and tbe Republicans four, in the
twtt the delegation will stand pre
cisely reversed, nine Republicans to
four Democrats.

The IVm iimi- sre boa ling in
frantic delight over tbe month's re
prcivc from death which tbey received
last week. Had they lost Indiana beir
fate was surely sealed. Tbey escaped
by the "tkin of their teeth," and are
ebouting in n;ad glee over tbe post
ponement of tbeir dotn for a month.
Last year the ILepublicans carried
Ohio by abont Cvethousaod majority,
and now tbey have nearly doubled
it. Last year tbe democrats had
Indiana by nearly eighteen thousand
majority, and now tbey have lost
more tban two-thirds of it. Which is
' ttie UDpermoitt dog in tbe fight ?
It is a significant and instructive
fact ibat at tbe election in Indiana
:last week, tbe Republicans made
(gains at tbe 'home" polls, of both
! Henprics and "Blue Jeans" Wil
' mams Tnese Democratic Statesman
(evidently do U"l improve on close
acquaintance.
The Democratic majority iu tbe
House was reduced at least twenty,
probablv twentv-four at tbe elections
(of last week, and twenty-four changes
(,f a similar cboracter will give the
House to tbe Republicans. Pennsyl
vania and New York alone, will fur
nish more than half of tbe n cesSary
(Uota.
The fact that Holman, tbe pica
yune demagogue, and Lankis tbe
ap'jHtle of unlimited greenbacks, were
both badly beaten for Congress by
Republicans, phows that Indiana is
not assuredly anchored safely to Hex
DitirKs, who was placed on the Presi
dential ticket solely to secure that
soft-mouey State.
L.!t year tbe Democrars had 42
majority on joint ballot in the Indi
ana Legislature. Now, tbe Repub
licans beve 0 ovtr both Democrats
and Independent?. Truly this is a
stunning Democratic victory. Tbe
exchange of a Legislature, and Con-
irressional deleeation for a pair of
old blue ican breeches, is enough to
nuke any Democrat "holler."
The vote polled in Cincinnati Iat
week is leveu thousand greater than
that of last year, when tbe fierce con
test was made between Hayes aud
Ai.i.r.s for Governor. It is clear,
that this iucreasc is largely fraudulent,
and as the two Democratic Congress
men from that district are reported as
elected; cue by tbrei hundred, aud
the other by less tban oue hundred
majority, the Republicans on a con
test, will doubtless be awarded tbe
seats.
The Democrats did a tremendous
a.nouut ol lying previous to the Ohio
aol Indiana elections, over the results
iu Maine and Colorado. Tbey pub-
linhed'a bocrus dispatch from Maine
claiming a reduction of tbe Repub
lican majority to 11,000. while tbey
persistently asserted tbat Colorado
bad gone Democratic. Now that
tbe lies no longer serve their purpose
it is admi led that the Republicans
carried Maine by over 15,000, and
that Colorado has voted the same
way. Annanias cjulJ'ut bold a can
dle to tbe average Democratic poli
tician, about election times.
A democratic majority of less than
five thousaud in Iudiana, this year,
where in 1ST4 the same patty had
a roaioritv of 1 7,502 the election of
four Congressmen where they Lad
nine, and the election in Ohio of
eight Congressmen where they bad
tbirieen, tbe doubling of tbe Repub
lican mujority in the Utter Slate, and
the loss of tbe Legislature in both
States is what the Democracy are
shouting over as "a glorious victory

criminal yells with delight, over tbe
few additional moments he is spared.

I'ittsbi Ri, I'a., October 12. At
S:45 o'clock this niuruing a terrible
explotiou occurred at ug Co.'s
mills, corner of Thirteenth and Etna
streets, which was attended with
great loss of life. ThJ boilers in the
nail mill exploded, aud that building
aud more than half of the rolling mill
were demolished. A large number
of employees were ai work, aud it is
importable to tell bow many are bur

been lakcu from tbe ruins.
At the time of the explosion there
were employed iu the nailiug depart

Tbe following is as near as can be ob

Killed, l'., wounded 22.

with ropes extended across the streets,
kept the surging crowd from interfer

fireman and their appuratus. The
Chief of DoMce, with a large body of
patrolmen, were kept busy in keepiug
back the crowd aud assisting iu car
rying out the wounded aud killed

The ofike of tbe works, on the cor
ner of Etna sfeet, opposite the mill
where the explosion occurred, was
considerably used up. Tbe building
was improvised into a temporary hos
pital, where the dead and wounded
were carried. A large number of
surgeons were promptly cn tbe
ground. The causes which led to
this frightful calamity are as yet en
veloped in mystery. Tbe boilers
were in charge of a careful cngiueer,
aud had been duly inspected before
tbe works resumed 0eraiion some
time ago.
