The brain of the Lome is very sensitive and should be carefully guarded. Many of our larmers use buachea or green leaves for this purpose, which serve the double purpose of shade and keeping away the flies. We say to all, "go thou and do like wise." We learn that Daniel Walters, esq., of Silver Spring township, bas within the last few weeks, lost four bead of fine (arm horses. This does not appear to be the disease that is prevailiue to a large extent over the country. The animals are strick en down by the disease, and apparently suffer no pain ; they are unable to eat anything, and seem to die from starvation. It is thought by many to be a disease at tributed to local causes. Mr. Walters has a number of animals yet sick, only one of which has received any visible relief. Valley tvntiHcl. The filth Ministerial and Sunday School Convention of the Somerset district, Pitts bure conference ol the Evangelical Associ ation convened, in the Trinity church of Cranesviile, Preston Co., west a., on Thuiwlay evening June 22d and continued until Tuesday evening of the following week. Quite a number of able and well pre pared essay were read, together with a few lectures delivered on various topics, which elicited annimated di&cussions. The convention was a grand success, in fusing new life and christian vigor in the heal Is of many and inspiring them with noble and daring efforts in the cause of Christ. Very pointed and ebiquent sermons were preached by the following ministers, vii: J. A. Grimm. Somerset. I. A. Smith. Mt. Pleasant. T. P. Savior. Salisbury. I H. Hetrick, Lieonier. D. K. La van. Bedford. It. V. llanmeter, Cranesviile. West Va. A. S. Baumgardner, Southampton. The exercises were vital and lull ol life. The attendance large and the the object of the covenlion lully realized. On Tuesday evening last about fifty, (it one,) citizens, on horseback, under tlie com mand of J. K. Edie, preceded by the Som erset Silver Cornet Band and a carriage bearing members of the town council, etc, started to meet the Cincinnati Light Guards. Tie party procteltd to the top ot Parson' Hill west o I town, when, no Light Guards appearing, a short halt was called,.and the party proceeded onward. In the course of a half mile they met the drum corps, and ia the next two miles en countered numerous parties of stragler. The main body ot the company and the otticsr were not come tip with until near Lavansvtlle. On meeting, the Somerset Cavalry formed to the right of the road, the Light Guards saluted, passed, and the Cavalry formed in their rear. Hi report of said exhibition is very favorable, and no doubt will have a tendency ot inducing others to follow his example. The School Director of this township have decided to erect a large and commo dious school building, w hich is to be situ ated in Cook's School District. We look forward for great improvement in the edu cational interest of this community, as we have men ol intellect and ability tilling the position of director. We are pleased to announce to the pub lic that there has arisen in our midst a Centennial Troup, who are now exhibit ing throughout the county. One of the greatest curiosities ol said troup is the per formance ot the noted Porter Brothers and Ihe one fooled jig dancer. We wieh them abundant success. Mr. Troutman shipped ome time since, to the distant west, one of the finest speci mens of the Durham breed of caitle ever raised in this community. This goe to prove that the larmers of tits part of the country are iiecoming interested in the raising of blooded stock. Edward Baker, a former citizen of this place, has returned from Caldwell. Among the acts of the last Legislature which the Governor has vetoed is one repealing the act of Februa ry 1, It-U, prohibiting horse racing tar as the same relates to agricultural societies and certain other Incorporated as sociations. The veto save This bill sim ply repeals all the penal provisions against horse racing and betung on horseraces There is nothing in it except in the title in reference to agricultural societies and certain other incorporated associations. The title is calculated to mislead and the subject is not clearly expressed in the title. as required by the constitution. The sub ject as expressed in the bill is a general re peal of a w holesome law, and Uie limita tion expressed in the title is not in the bill. No societies or associations are re ferred to. I he repeal ol the penal provisions against betting on horse races would be a retrograde movement, unwarranted by the moral sentiment ot the State.
